Although she was understandably nervous, Julie Barden was also thrilled to be taking up her first job as district nurse in the small seaside town of Ambersea...
It was not so much the medical side of things as her patients’ personal problems that interested her so deeply – the old woman neglected by her daughter-in-law; a teenager struggling to keep the home going for her young brothers and sisters; an orphan child that nobody all square pegs that Julie was convinced she could help into square holes.
But her biggest problem was her relationship with the local doctor, David Pembury, who saw her only as an interfering ‘new broom’ sweeping far too clean. Each of them only wanted the best for their patients. Would they be able to agree about how to achieve it?
I enjoyed reading about the life of a district nurse in the UK during this 1960s, although it was definitely dated. The author does a good job of setting the scene and including supporting characters that seem like real people, but there was a lot of repetition between chapters, with the narrator reminding us who characters are and what had happened to them in the past. I think this must have been originally published as a serial, and I think if it had been reedited prior to publication as a novel it would have been a stronger story.
This book was great and the characters in it will keep you turning the pages quickly to see what happens next in their lives.I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read medical romance.
This is a short and sweet romance. It was an from the the nurse’s perspective. I would have like to see a more developed hero and romance but there are certainly enjoyable minor characters.
I have loved Audrie Manley Tucker's books for many years, since reading The Greenwood Tree back in the 80s. This is the first time. I have read this one and it didn't disappoint. They don't make em like this anymore.
A great story about a district nurse. It was interesting to see how she did her work. The romantic relationship that occurred was a little surprising and the ending was feel good. Romance without tears - very nice.
