The zombies have been banished for almost a year now, and Adrian Ring's greatest threats are starvation, and strangers.
He can feed both problems away, but a full belly doesn't always lead to trust.
With the Northern Valley Cooperative shored up as allies, the future looks bright for Adrian and his family at Bastion. They've added tanks, machine guns, a helicopter, and a hundred trained National Guardsman to their assets on hand.
But why is Adrian so uneasy?
Why are the refuges from overseas coming in such large droves? Why are they so hungry, and afraid? Why are they so happy to find the Trinity on foreign shores?
Because they left the scourge behind.
At least, they thought they left it behind.
Humanity's plague returns, and when it does, alliances old and new are put to the test, and the world is upended yet again. The Last Resort contains Adrian's Journal entries from December 3rd, 2013 through June 7th, 2014. It also contains the side fictions, Steve Goes to the City, The Only Easy Day, The Last Plane out of Kandahar, The Citadel, Terrible Things in Your Name, and Just Me.
I am the creator and author of Tesser: A Dragon Among Us as well as Elmoryn's The Kinless Trilogy, Colony Lost, Adrian's Undead Diary and the Darkness of Diggory Finch.
I've gone to a LOT of college. I've got a Business degree as well as a Psychology degree, and I've done the full program at the school of hard knocks. I've been a printing press operator, bouncer, purchasing agent, bodyguard, customer service representative, mental health counselor, and more. I can write about weird shit because I've done weird shit. Trust me.
I call the wonderful state of New Hampshire my home, but I love to travel. I love to read, write, play role playing games, miniatures games, video games, and Magic: The Gathering. When I find the time to be active, I like to hike, play basketball, and play football. I am married to a wonderful woman, and together we have two wonderful daughters.
Talk about a cliff-hanger ending...Wow - Author Chris Philbrook is amazing. Zipped through this one way too Fast. Gonna have to re-listen because so much was happening and I adore this series. As usual, the narration performed Mr. James Anderson Foster provided a delightful listening experience.
I love the Adrian's Undead Diary series. The latest addition to the series, The Last Resort: Adrian's March Part Two, is no different. The book has all the wonderful Adrian, Becky, Hall, Kevin and Michelle readers love plus other new characters. Adrian is Adrian, still questioning if he is a good person or not, and reacting strongly when his loved ones are threatened. The action is non-stop and well written. I have never held a gun (have no desire to) but Chris Philbrook writes his action scenes so well that even someone like me can follow what is happening.
If you are already an Adrian fan, pick up this exciting new addition. I believe the audio is expected by the end of the year. If you have not read The Adrian's Undead Diary series, check it out. It is one of those series that you read multiple times because it is a world that you want to visit again and again.
The Bastion and nearby communities are all doing well now that the undead are gone. The Northern Valley Cooperative, a well armed group of national Guardsmen and military personnel suggests teaming up and becoming allies, ignoring his gut feeling, Adrian agrees when the other people there feel it's a good idea, he should have listened to his gut. The back stabbing starts secretly until the undead come back, brought unknowingly by the refugees from the UK and other European countries where the undead still outnumber the living by the millions. War is declared and so many beloved characters are lost. What's next to come? I highly recommend this book and the entire Adrian's Undead Diary series if you're a fan of character driven, emotionally charged tales in the zombie/horror genre.
If you thought you had read the best zombie apocalypse story ever in the story written up to now, be prepared to have your mind blown away. I took the morning off work so I could read this as soon as it dropped. There was no way to stop reading. Take 5 stars and multiply by 100. I wrote a review for Dealer of Hope and said I missed badass Adrian Ring and that I was not feeling his no mohawk, diplomatic new attitude. Things start off well with the NVC meeting but at some point things go horribly wrong and Mohawk vengeance is my name Adrian Ring shows who is boss of the Apocalypse. My next request in my review asked for a Gabriel 2.0. Adrian needed some serious special ops backup. Mission accomplished. Do not want to spoil that crazy cool plot twist. In the review I said I really want to know about Adrians other brother. Mission Accomplished. I asked about the other trinities... Mission Accomplished. Literally can not wait for the next book. All I will say is Adrian is needed to save Europe and we are off on another great zombie apocalypse story. I will end this review with the warning to have some Kleenex ready. The Mohawk is back for a reason. Congratulations Chris. I had already opined you had the best ZA story ever written. This one surpasses every expectation any fan could ever have and I do not have the words to express by gratitude for you writing my favorite literary character ever.
This book was considerably better than its predecessor. Where I got a sense with the last book that the author was just throwing ideas out into the world to see what stuck, in this book, I got more of a sense that the story finally has a destination in mind.
Now that it knows where it is going, it isn't wasting any time heading in that direction. As a result, both Adrian's story and his brother's flashback chapters were far more engaging, and this story did far more to suck me in than the last book did.
Because it has once more drawn me in, the ending of this book is quite the blow. I wasn't expecting the fallout in this book to be quite so high quite so soon in this series, and I'm of mixed opinions about it. On the one hand, I am definitely about as engaged in this story as I have ever been, which was in doubt at the end of the last book. On the other hand, I can't help but feel that the way this book ends could undo the ending of the original 8-book series.
I enjoyed the end of the first series, and thought that I'd at least always have that series to return to if I didn't like this one. But choices are made in this book that can't be unexperienced once you have experienced them, and it has put a massive question mark over the ending of that first series for me. Now, my future enjoyment of both series hangs in how well the author ends this series, so there's a lot riding on the future books.
For now, I'll cautiously say I enjoyed this book enough to give it 4 stars. There are some decisions made here, especially regarding the casualties of this novel, that I am not cool with. I feel like they deserved more from this story than they got, and I'm not sure how it will feel going forward after an event like this.
For now, I'll just hope the next book can make up for the losses we took in this story, and that this series can somehow redeem these events.
I started this book already knowing I was going to get the book equivalent of a throat punch, still I was unprepared for how the story evolved.
For anyone seeking to buy this book, I'll not spoil the story other than to say, forget what you think is going to happen.
Super happy to get some side story of Adrian's brother, and for what may be set up in the books to come.
From start to end, I consumed this book in a single sitting and I doubt I could be happier with how mad I am at Chris Philbrook for another masterpiece in this epic series. Just saying, if he ever runs his car over into the snow, he may just wake up with a block between his feet and me with a heavy maul in my hands.
So.. if you come to read the reviews to see if you should buy this book, quit your oscillating and buy it now.
Since this is not my first reading of this series, it’s safe to say that I really like Adrian‘s undead diary, and Chris PhilBrooks world building. Well, there was less zombie apocalypse action in this one. It was still interesting and suspenseful. . The conflict and uncertainty of the relationship with the ski resort community led by General Misaki was tense and and there was a pretty creepy, scary bad guy. (for some reason, I can’t remember the name of the community). Anyone who has not read this series the journal style entry does take a little bit of getting used to but the whole world building in narrative is pretty good . Some really lovely/interesting co-characters. One absolutely tragic loss that was really sad. I am going straight into the next book in the series . Narration was outstanding .
Solid continuation of the series that was let down by the ending (IMHO). I felt that the events of the last chapter were unnecessary and the trigger for the next stage of the plot could have been handled much better.
And given the events of this book, and the continued existence of this book's enemy, the idea that the two lead characters are heading off for the rest of the series seems unlikely given their outspoken commitments to keeping Bastion safe. Puzzled how this can be handled plausibly (within the context of the series).
The NVA has struck, lives have been lost and Adrian is on the way path. He's not stopping until everyone he loves is safe. This book blew me away and I laughed and cried and we lost some really good friends in this book, I'm heartbroken at the losses. The ending was OMG and now I have to wait very impatiently for the next book. Wish I could give this more than 5 stars it definitely deserves it.
Oh my heart just aches for my book boyfriend Adrian Ring!!! You are just never ever safe in a ZOMPOC of any Kind...and Mr Philbrook dont you think I didn't catch that Talbot reference...I think you and MT may have something up your sleeves...or at least I hope so!!! GREAT STORY, EXCELLENT NARRATION...SUPERB DOWN TO EARTH WRITING AT ITS FINEST!!! I cant wait until the next one!! KEEP THEM COMING CP!!!
I CANT RECOMMEND THIS SERIES ANY HIGHER!! JUST ONE CLICK IT AND THANK ME LATER!!!
How to review a book I love and hate at the sane time. I couldn’t put this book down, yet I wanted to chuck it out the window at least 5 times. I can’t even begin to say much without spoiling it.
To anyone on the fence about this series? Read it. You will not regret it, until you do, then you’ll read it again.
It was so nice to hear from Adrian again! It's like catching up with an old friend that you haven't seen in a while. There was a moment in this book that I actually cheered out loud. I love this character so much that he can do no wrong in my eyes. It was also nice to see how far he has come in trusting and leaning on his own people. Always ready for more Adrian!
This might be my favorite of the entire series, and that is saying something since I have loved them all. The Last Resort has twists that I didn't see coming and the end of the book is so fast paced it was brutal to have to put it down. The only thing I can add is the final ending to the book is terrific, as it will challenge what you thought you knew about this series.
Just great. Loved the whole series but the last couple are the best. Adrian is a very good character to follow. You know it’s good when you drive home but won’t leave the car until you heard just a little bit more. Every book in my collection (hundreds of stories by audible, cd-MP3’s, cd-audio and even books on tape) all audiobooks, couldn’t travel without them. Chris keep them coming!
There is peace and prosperity, and after victory there's nowhere but up and forward to go right??Then there's a big twist that shakes up everything and it just steamrolls from there. The mohawk comes back for a reason, and I cannot wait to see what develops next.
Such an amazing book. Lots of the normal laughs. Lots of heartbreak (makes me feel like I’ve lost family members). Loved how Adrian’s brother Thomas was a big part of the story.
Chris, what the heck man! I've got to say this is probably my favorite one so far. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I can't wait to see what Adrian faces next.
I really hate to drop a two, always been five stars, but this book…. Was it rushed? What the heck happened at the end? Everyone? Wtf! Plus for Adrian to be so experienced, you are still writing him in as an amateur. I guess I will give this series a break, may or may not be back.
I really enjoy these books by Chris. One moment there is laughter, the next sadness beyond belief, the next is tension so high you can cut a string with it, and you never know when a character that you really like is going to be taken out. Reading every book I can find that Chris has written.
This series is incredible! I truly hope the story continues. His words and characters just meld into an unbelievably seamless series that one just cannot put down.
