I enjoyed this book. I had two questions though - how in the world did Joy make it through one semester when she constantly broke rules?? It was portrayed as a place where you followed every rule or were sent home but they let her slide for everything under the sun! Secondly, did Joy ever get rid of her warts?? It told of 7 of them disappearing but we get no verdict on the other 30. :( I wish Joy had tougher it out and stayed the second year. The way she flirted and had many "boyfriends" I was surprised that she let herself totally lose it over Danny. What ever happened to Jack?

I love to read about the mountains and the mountain people and this book was about a young lady named Florence Joyce Castle and the mountains. She was full of determination, courage and spunk. Her desire for a higher education would not be stopped by lack of funds. It gives you an insight to what life was like to have to walk many miles to school and all the dangers and joys it entailed in the mountains. Great book.

Very accurate account of what it was like to go to Alice Lloyd during the Depression. My dad told stories but I was young and they were meaningless. I now have a better appreciation of his accounts.

I met this lovely humble author at an Appalachian Festival in Cincinnati. She is the real deal from the mountains! I loved visualizing her life in the mountains during the depression.
