Monique was born in Houston, Texas, but her family soon moved to Southern California. She grew up on both coasts, living in Connecticut and California. She currently resides in Southern California with her naughty Siamese cat, Monkey.
Monique attended the University of Southern California's Film School where she earned a BFA from the Filmic Writing department. Monique worked in television for several years before joining the family business. She now works full-time as a freelance writer and novelist. Her novels Out of Time, When the Walls Fell, Fragments & The Devil's Due are the first three books in the Out of Time series.
She's currently working on an adaptation of one of her screenplays, her father's memoirs about his time in the Air Force's Air Rescue Service and the next book in the Out of Time series.
Typical girl figures out/accidentally discovers one day that she has supernatural powers and that she is destined to save the world story.
I found the use of American English in 1900s England distracting - "gotten" for "got" etc. Calling the suffragists "suffragettes", which was the insulating nickname given them by their opponents, was disappointing. Monique Martin's Out of Time series was better researched and written, so I had expected better.
Artemis/Blaze is a less developed character than those in Out of Time, and none of the characters had any of the endearing characterisations I had come to expect from her other stories.
Inoffensive perhaps (except for the language and historical errors) but not overly engaging either.
It's like Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets....umm Downton Abbey I guess? Super fun, great voice, exciting action scenes, and a colorful cast of characters. Already binging book 2!
With any of the previous Monique Martin books I've opened, I'm lost in it after the first handful of paragraphs. This one, not so much. I started and stopped a dozen times before I finished. I like the characters well enough, but I'm having trouble with the concept. Odd, considering I can get deeply into time travel.... I'm still not sure if I will continue with the series.
I'm a huge fan of Monique Martin and find her to be a gifted storyteller. Is Blaze as addicting as her other works (mainly The Out of Time series)? No. But it definitely shows promise and I think it will get better with the next few installments. I will pick up the next one as I'm curious to see where Ms. Martin takes this story.
This story was intriguing and distrubbing. The whole demon and killings was really gross. I did love her father and Tommy and liam and Phoebe. I thought the writer did a very good job giving me the hubjebez. So if you like this kind of book, you will love this author. Oh. I almost want to read the next ones just so I can see where the romance thread goes.
I think it’s well written, at least compared to a lot of YA authors I’ve read. I liked the story (I’m a huge Buffy fan). And I liked that it wasn’t too dark or too crude. It’s kinda like the perfect YA book :)
I'm not sure how I felt about this book. it was competently written, the characters were fine. the world was also fine. but it stirred nothing really more than fine. I didn't want to not be reading it, but it wasn't super compelling for me. fine.. I guess.
The synopsis is what caused me to try this book. It was basically about a young woman coming of age and her unique powers. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.
