I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read a lot of personal development, so I can highly recommend this one. The authors pulls you in right from the introduction and keeps your attention all through the 5 step program. The stories and examples really help to bring the points home. Also, the book is concise, gets to the point quickly and in the end reminds you that, like any other skill, mental toughness needs to be practiced. Don't just read it and forget, continue to use the skills to master mental toughness.
This book explains that unique, missing secret ingredient.
In my opinion, The Mental Toughness Advantage is more than a “book” it’s a manual and personal workbook journal in one. At first I thought is was going to be similar to other books I’ve read on goal setting and getting unstuck and the like. Man, did that opinion change after diving into this instruction manual on how to assess and manage your ability to create your life plans - at any stage of your life.
The Mental Toughness Advantage is definitely a “mind-set”. It leads the reader in deciding how to manage your mind-set, regardless of how much pain you might be experiencing or how much fear you may face when beginning a new endeavor.
Comstock’s 5-step process is logical and guides you to make unemotional decisions to lay down the groundwork to your goals with mental grit. It's that unique, missing secret ingredient most don't know or use.
Several discussions really resonated with me, especially the “Power of Visualization” - to believe you’ve already achieved something by having a positive visual outcome from the beginning. And, how we can alter our brain by believing and visualizing our success in advance.
I liked the logic in identifying our core beliefs and how we see ourselves and to not worry about what other people think when we’re deciding on our own destiny.
And finally, reminiscent of Simon Sinek, the most important question to ask before setting any goal is, why? Why is this goal important to me? When there is a clear answer to why, the how will follow. This is so true.
This “manual” won’t end up on the shelf alongside all my other books on goal setting and motivation. This one is going to get dog-eared and highlighted and have (more) notes in the margins. It’s going to get used. Thanks Doug Clydesdale Comstock.
I, like the author, have been mentally tough in my life. I have raised a special needs child/adult, started a Financial Advisory practice from scratch and completed many long distance athletic events. I have found recently though, that my mental toughness has been waning. So Doug’s book, The Mental Toughness Advantage came at the right time with the right information.
The book has a great balance of quality information and exercises. The information includes examples from Doug’s experiences as well as insights from other knowledgeable sources. The exercises make the book interactive. By the end of the read, I had a blueprint on how to proceed meeting my goals.
Two of my favorite concepts were, Get comfortable being uncomfortable and Activate optimism. I highly recommend this book.
This book was recommended by a friend. All of the things discussed were all very positive and useful, but nothing necessarily research-backed and mostly felt like a list of stuff we all probably know. While a positive influence to remember it all and be reminded, not much learning was done.
Not a bad book, but not one I would recommend as I definitely don’t feel better off having read it.
The Mental Toughness Advantage" by Douglas Clydesdale Comstock is a must read for anyone interested in turning inspirational dissatisfaction into a tough mind set. This book completes the total package of empowerment for people of all ages. Robert Frost wrote the poem "The Road Not Taken." Doug Comstock has paralleled this poem by giving you step by step directions on how to challenge yourself to take this road through mental toughness. With his directions life can become more simplified once you master the art of adjusting your perception, embracing your failures and reading your moral compass. Life is more beautiful with strength...get your book now!!!!! Susan Tukey, retired teacher
A solid book that I should do more to implement each aspect.

Got this in the Humble Blood, Sweat and New Years bundle, which I paid for.
This is a book that is ultimately about how to act and react in the face of stressful situations. The beginning gives an almost shocking confession: the book was written just as the author's wife was filing for divorce, which is a pretty stressful situation to be in no matter how that relationship was.
The book's advice is a lot of seemingly simple concepts that actually do help significantly in a crisis: learn to let go but also to take charge, don't be afraid of failure, make use of the tribe for mentorship, and so on. Many things that don't often occur in our world of isolation and success-mindedness. I noticed that if nothing else keeping these practices in mind helped me step outside of my comfort zone more often fairly immediately.
An excellent book for it's subject and one that is still helping me, definitely a must read for anybody who has high aspirations and low self esteem.
I’ve read a few self help/motivational books and I always feel they fall short. Normally- they’re generalized and you’re sitting there thinking…”how exactly do I get from the point I’m at to the point you’re talking about?”
Not this book! I loved that the author gave you ACTUALLY examples. He gave suggestions for every step/action he was telling you about. He compared scenarios, experiences (his and others) and laid it all out for you. This was something I found myself pausing the book and actually taking the time to do the steps. I am still trying to figure out my “mantra”. That is going to take me some time and he even explains how that will change as your grow. You’ll tweak parts of it.
This book makes you want to get up, do these five steps and start changing you life. Meeting your goals and preparing your mind for challenges.
This is a great book to get you started if you feel like you're stuck in some kind of a rut. I highly recommend this entertaining and humorous book that also contains a lot of great tips to get you motivated to start or to continue projects, or start aiming at some bigger life goal. It's so easy to give up on big projects, and this book is a great way to get and keep that drive to accomplish these significant projects. Doug's advice makes all things seem possible!
I enjoyed the basic uplifting message. The methods for improving your mental toughness were attainable. It allowed you to think about how we can endure during difficult times and develop resilience.
Clear, concise and deliberate. Clear examples of the points made in the text with direct applicable ways to practice mental toughness. Understanding mental toughness is a skill that can be developed, practiced and honed the author shows you exactly how to make it happen.
Solid Guide to Mental Toughness How to for Beginners
I think this is a good book for folks just starting to get into pursuing Mental Toughness. If you’re not already reading in this field, Douglas kindly defines it in the opening chapter. It’s not about being perfect out of the gate. It’s about getting back up again. It certain has to do with managing emotions in order to complete in an environment of intense competition.
The 5 Easy-to-Follow-Steps are summarized on the back cover, so citing them here doesn’t rob him of any of his intellectual property. Step 1: Let Go and Take Charge Step 2: Create a Mission Statement Step 3: Prioritize the Positive Step 4: Flex Your Flexibility Step 5: Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
I was a little disappointed initially when early on chapter 1 Douglas held up the example of a professional athlete but only dedicated 2 sentences to his story, and the first was the preamble. Our unconscious mind needs a longer, not massive, example in order to picture the example and hold that up for ourselves. Doing so paints a picture and weaves a story which can hold both up to inspire and motivate us along the path of our endeavors.
But DO persevere because Comstock does provide longer examples complete with visual anchors and length later on in the book.
I wish the author had interwoven more examples perhaps from his clients which would have made the stories unique, making his book more unique to him. He repeatedly cited examples from the Motivational Speaker Circuit which have been so over used now for over 15 years. He delineates some of those familiar stores with more details than most places already have. I won’t cite them here because if this topic is new for you, the stories will be new for you. That would have been more OK if those had been peppered with more stories uniquely his purview and not what you would hear or read in others works and speeches. If this is your first Mental Toughness book, Comstock' delivers a helpful How-to-Guide which is practical. I always like practical, don't you? Plus I really like the interior layout and how it helps you to move through the book and then also find your place again when you want to reference something again in the future.
I’m not sure why the print book is priced at $14.99 for such a short book padded with a lot of “list your answers here” filler (which other authors just cite the questions and invite you to write you answers on a piece of paper), quotes taking up full pages throughout the book, and then is only 91 pages. I counted about 7+ pages of the stuff. The Resources and web articles cited all look very good. The Kindle $7.99 is closer to what I was thinking was the print book price point until I looked at the back cover.
If you pick up a copy, it certainly is a good and enjoyable read. Perfect for when traveling and you want to engage your mind on your commute bus or train or commuter flights.
I received a free copy from the Publisher an honest review.

💪Overview: Action- orientated 5 step program to develop mental toughness and achieve life goals.
🧠Genre: Personal Development | Self-Improvement | Psychology
👍Likes: Clear 5 steps, examples throughout, short and to the point, succinct.
👎Dislikes: Nothing new or groundbreaking, very high level.

The 5 Steps:
1️⃣ Let go and take charge - Be aware of what serves you and what doesn’t. Release whatever does not help you achieve your goals. - Journal about (1) pattern identification, (2) practice self acceptance, (3) set your intention, (4) create a letting go ceremony. - Sample mantras: “you always pass failure on your way to success”. - Managing The Minute: Perform the task for just one minute. At the end of the minute, ask yourself can you continue?
2️⃣ Create a mission statement - All things are created twice: in your mind and in reality (pre-playing), e.g. Jim Carey growing up in poverty in Canada, write himself a check for $1m as something to aspire to. - When having negative thoughts, ask yourself “so what?”. - Ask yourself “why do you do what you do?” And answer starting with “so that…”
3️⃣ Prioritise the positive - Words have power, choose them wisely. - Speak to yourself as you’d speak to a friend. - Visualise your success.
4️⃣ Flex your flexibility - Setback are opportunity in disguise. - NPS: Neutral Positioning Statement - The only constant is change. Learn to thrive in it.
5️⃣ Step outside your comfort zone - Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. - Eliminate the word “quit” from your vocabulary. - Become aware of productive discomfort. - Nothing paralyses us like “what if?”. - The 3 Rs: (1) Refresh (2) Renew and (3) Revive, which is essential for Resilience.

If you are up against the wall, you can respond many different ways. Psychologists label some of these ways as Fight, Flight, or Freeze. Some of us would add the word Freak, as well.
Marines are taught that the three ways they can respond to a crisis are to improvise, adapt, and overcome. Failure is not an option.
The book The Mental Toughness Advantage: A 5-Step Program to Boost Your Resilience and Reach Your Goals by Douglas Comstock seeks to help readers improvise, adapt, and overcome by teaching them some coping skills.
This short book(91 pages) is very hard on the eyes. The page numbers, sidebars, and box quotes are all white text on an orange background which makes them nearly impossible to read for older eyes.
If your resilience could use a little boost, or your mental toughness needs a tune-up, The Mental Toughness Advantage may just be what you need.

I have read arguments that this book takes an overly simplistic, somewhat ableist, and male-centered view. His suggestions can come across that way. But he also has a lot of good ideas. It kinda felt like I was getting advice from a big teddy bear of a Dad who wants to tell it like it is while also sugar-coating everything so you are safe.
Overall I think the book is worthwhile and I might want to read it again in paper format so I can take notes which I generally don't do when I listen to books.
A quick, short but pleasurable and valuable listen to inspire you, guiding you into a more resilient and thought mindset: don't let setbacks stop you from achieving your potential. We all have a hidden potential, not really hidden, just masqueraded from our fears and irrational stops we ourselves created for us.
This read more like a tough guy guide to success, which to me was a missed opportunity. There were some worthwhile suggestions in the text, but they were surrounded by grin and bear it type items that if someone had trouble addressing, then they would be portrayed as weak which I do not see as always the case.
This book was okay. It's straightforward and presents a lot of exercises, which might be helpful to change your mindset to an action-based person and stop being stuck in overthinking paralyzing fears. My only issue is that is it very redundant and can be honestly cut to half its content.
I like that this book had actionable steps and worksheets. I would recommend if you are looking for a refresher on personal development and just want to get your mindset right. For me, I found this book to be iterative and lacks new ideas.
If you're struggling a little or a lot this book will help you through and give you skills to maintain mental toughness. I appreciated how he wrote the book as he was going through a tough time in his life, a divorce, and proceeded to write a good book.
Good basic guide to improving mental toughness if you are new to the topic. Good examples. Easy enjoyable listen, as an audio book. Narrator had the right kind of voice for the topic!
