Ava Andrews has been trying to heal her broken heart. Her first love, Haden Rutherford, left for the army when they were eighteen. Soon after, he stopped answering her calls, her letters… ending the relationship with no explanation. She’d always done her best to move on. Yet, after a string of failed relationships - and countless bad dates - all she can seem to think about is how much she still misses him. How much she still loves him. How much she still hates him. Seven years, one gunshot wound, and a serious bout of PTSD later, Haden has returned home. And Lyla isn’t the only one heartbroken. A chance encounter at a local bar reminded Haden just how much he loved Ava. How much he still loves her. Having ghosted her all those years ago to protect her, Haden is realizing how much of a mistake he made. All he wants is to hold her. Kiss her. Beg her forgiveness. It’s time for him to fix what’s broken – time to heal them both. If only she’ll let him. They say time heals all. Hopefully, that’s true. Because this is one epic wound.
From the get go, I felt the snoozing coming on. Like someone snuck me some Nyquil just as opened the book.
This is very basic story about high school sweethearts who go separate ways because the hero decides to join the army without telling her. but the initial romance is so boring and two dimensional that you don't really feel how she can be so broken hearted a few pages in. We got no real sense of how what they really are to each other in so few pages.

I took some time off from ku, first to revisit some of my fav rereads then because migraines made all reading impossible. My first book back was good...if I needed a replacement for Nyquil. The first chapter is all teenage angst and extended 18 year old sex scene which is distinctly uncomfortable for me as a closer to thirty than twenty age woman. In other words...I skipped it. I was so bored I didn't even finish the first present day chapter. There's so much narrative and so many little things that don't jibe but add up fast to make the hero not make much sense as a character. Dnf
i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the second chance romance between high school sweethearts Ava and Hayden. They had broken up when Hayden enlisted in the military instead of joining Ava at college. Hayden felt the war had changed him and he wasn't good for Ava anymore. When he was discharged, he suffered from PTSD and anger issues. Hayden returned to their hometown and was working with his father in construction. Ava had moved to Chicago to work at a large accounting firm until her father got sick and she moved back to town. Neither Ava or Hayden could forget the other and when they ran into each other one night at a bar, they both knew they had to talk. I liked this book. I thought it was so emotional reading about Hayden. I loved how Ava still wanted to be with Hayden and help him through his issues. Hayden wanted to get better and he had to work at it. I thought they were good together. Good one.
This is a short read, but good. We have to high school sweethearts. Ava thinks she and Haden are going off to college together, but Haden has his heart set on going into the army. He has broken Ava's heart. Haden comes back with PTSD, and having a hard time. After 7 years being apart they see each other in a bar. What will they do? Can forgives come from Ava? Can Haden get past his PTSD to try to be with Ava again? I received a free copy for my honest review.
Ava and Hayden were a couple in high school. She thought they were going to go to college together but Hayden had other plans. He joined the army, finished basic and got sent off to war. When he came back, he avoided Ava because he felt he was broken and didn't deserve her. They go through some ups and downs, but they finally get their HEA.
Haden and Ava were high school sweet hearts. After graduation Hayden joined the military and slowly things changed. Now years later both are back in the same town. Wonderful story, a little hear breaking at times but you can't help but hope they can work things out.
I didn’t really enjoy this book. It was far too fast paced, the dialogue was written in a way that people generally do not speak (so it wasn’t a comfortable read if that makes sense) and the characters were so underdeveloped - as was the plot.
If there is such a thing as second chances, it's written here in this story. When your heart is broken can it be repaired by trying one more time? I would have liked a little more story, but it was an okay read.
