I was not familiar with Howard Thurman and then he was mentioned in two or three places within a week, so I looked him up. My goodness -- how did I miss such an intelligent and inspiring preacher, poet, and theologian. He was also prolific, so I didn't know where to start. Luckily, I found this collection of excerpts from several of his most well-known writings. It was perfect for this Advent season when I needed to dig deeply into Christian tradition and belief. He is a literary writer, which I so appreciate. This is a book not to be read quickly, but to relish and contemplate.

This is a collection of short meditations by the great 20th-century theologian and mystic Howard Thurman when he was the dean of Marsh Chapel at Boston University. The meditations are divided into several sections such as "The Quest for Meaning" and the Quest for Fulfillment," as well as extended meditations on particular passages of the Bible, such as I Corinthians 13 and Psalm 139. I read one of these every evening before going to bed. They usually focused on one simple thought that caused me to reflect more deeply on who I was in relation to God. As always, Thurman did not disappoint!

What can I say? This book was illuminating. Thurman was one of the great American theologians and contemplatives of the 20th century. He had a profound influence on Dr. King, and it is said Thurman's book "Jesus and the Disinherited" was his constant companion. The language in Thurman's writings is a bit dated, reflecting the times in which he lived. But if you're looking for enlightenment in a religion-obsessed world, you will find his wisdom and spiritual insights timely and timeless.

This book helped to lift my sagging spiritual life during my time in seminary and set me on a path of robust spiritual renewal. A great companion for the spiritual life.
