You’re trapped inside the heart of a decaying generation ship drifting between the stars. How will you survive and find a new home?
Your families woke up from cryostasis halfway through a thousand year journey. Now you must find a way to live on a ship that wasn’t intended to support long-term habitation, keep it running, and try to make sure future generations reach the promised land at the end of your journey.
Generation Ship is an alternate setting for Legacy: Life Among the Ruins 2nd Edition written by Aaron Griffin and illustrated by Tithi Luadthong, focusing on mankind’s struggle to survive a perilous journey between the stars.
On reading this setting for Legacy I got very excited and decided to roll it out at Revelation in early 2019. I ran it for a group of experienced roleplayers, and overall we had a good time in the 9 hours or so we had with it. 'Generation Ship' is a plug-in that deals with multi-generational star travel with limited resources and knowledge.
There are some issues we found in play with the playbooks and reference material not aligning with those in the book.
What to expect, another great addition to the Legacy worlds and to sci-fi RPG in general! Aaron carves out an interesting setting of people trying to survive on a generation ship although they were awakened prematurely. Add in the art of Tithi Luadthong and I am sold.
Aaron, different to Godsend, is close to the original concepts of Legacy. However, he eases even new players into them. The setting is close to vanilla Legacy while it still presents a new and enriching experience. Aaron helpfully points to the similarities and differences compared to vanilla Legacy, so even a quick read gives a good overview of the rules.
The game reminded me especially of Stargate Atlantis, which is not a surprise as SG:A is mentioned between the inspirations. A great part is the suggestions what character supports what gaming style. The families and characters, as usual, present interesting playbooks and the Generation ship allows for a more classical or pulpier sci-fi. Especially I could recommend the supplement for anyone interested in an expansion to the original game and its setting as opposed to Godsend or Rhapsody of Blood that present truly different approaches to the system.
