As the title suggests, the book is intended for Grade 5, and is a great guide for those who teach. Especially those who help students get better and engage beyond surface level and study the texts deeply. The highlights of the book is that the authors suggest that close reading can be taught at any age. Developing text-dependent questions is a helpful way to help the students engage deeper with any text.

Start van boek was voor mij niet echt motiverend, maar kwam na een aantal hoofdstukken en werd het praktischer (uitleg + voorbeelden) Veel tips voor groep 1+2 en 5 t/m 8. 3-4 werd naar mijn idee iets onderbelicht. Fijn ook veel tips voor boeken die geschikt zijn. Ik ga aan de slag!

This was a helpful guide for developing purposeful lessons to teach students close reading across grade leveled and disciplines. I found the guidelines to develop text-dependent questions across multiple readings to use as models. In addition, guidelines for adjusting lessons through formative assessments were also helpful. I would have appreciated my general guidelines and fewer case studies, which are harder to glean hints from.

Ik heb de Nederlandse editie gelezen. Waardevolle informatie over deze manier van leesonderwijs. Ook bruikbaar voor het voortgezet onderwijs. We moeten echt het tij keren en ervoor zorgen dat onze jeugd beter gaat lezen. Een aanrader voor leerkrachten in po en vakdocenten in vo (en niet alleen docenten Nederlands).
