In this book, author James Allan, himself an experienced pilot, takes a close and critical look at many fatal aircraft accidents that have been attributed to 'pilot error'. Several of these events made world-wide headlines, like the horrific death-toll caused by the collision between the KLM and Pan Am Boeing 747 Jumbo-jets at Tenerife and like the Munich Airport crash, that killed so many members of the Manchester United football team. Others are less notorious accidents in which fewer people, perhaps only the pilot, died. The author uses information from cockpit voice recordings and his own extensive experience of flying as a civil and military pilot and as a frequent airline passenger to paint vivid word pictures of the stresses and tensions faced by the aircrew in each of these accidents. He also enables readers to join the passengers in the airliner cabins, to share some of the anguish, the panic and the courage that all become evident in the reactions of different people, as they face up to these terrifying situations.
