Grant:
Returning home to sleepy Umberland was supposed to be temporary—just to see my family before securing a job in the city. But when my brother's old best friend and my teen crush Ian Barrett is here too, I find myself making excuses to stick around a little longer. He's still everything I've ever wanted, but this former baseball star is also a big-time player... if you know what I mean. I don't know what Ian would ever see in steady, reliable Grant Rainier.

But I also know I can't stay away.

When we start working away together on his dream, I know I'm in trouble. One glance and my heart melts, along with my resolve. Being with him means staying in Umberland and giving up my big-city ambitions, but being without him means losing the best thing that's ever happened to me. How am I supposed to let go of either one?

Ian:
I've had my share of men, but I've also attracted more than my share of controversy. And since I was a teenager, the Rainier family has always been my rock—I feel like part of the clan. When I see Grant Rainier again, I can't help but remember him as a teenager just off to college... and now the boy is all man.

For the first time in my life, the chemistry is there, and so is the caring.

But should I subject him to the whirlwind of my life? And can I risk the peace and solitude I've given up everything for?

Letting Go is the first book in the Rainier Family series and can be read on its own. 67k words of dreamy, steamy, wishes-come-true love, getting over long-standing fears, Rainiers running interference, and a whole big, bustling, small-town family waiting for its HEA.

Update to review 3/20/19 after listening to the Audiobook.

I totally read these books out of order and got through book two first… That one was great so I went back and picked this one up right afterwards and was not disappointed.

Grant is home for the summer after college to spend some time with his family before he goes off to find a new job. He is surprised and pleased to see when his older brother’s best friend Ian is back in town too. Grant has always had a crush on Ian. Ian is just now noticing how grown up and Hot Grant has become. Grant’s Brother Trevor is a total Tool and doesn’t want them to get together. Which, when we learn a little more about Ian’s past is a bit understandable, but I think Trevor’s reaction is a bit much and maybe he just needs to get laid himself. Lol. I did feel really bad for Ian and what he went through in his Retirement from playing Baseball that was a horrible thing to experience. And the drama in this book matches the drama in book two, but on a different level of crazy, and different in what happens. I really did like this book as well, but the heat in book two was a lot stronger than this one, I didn’t really feel like Grant and Ian’s connection was as strong. I would like to add in though for this book. I was really thrown off about Ian’ being a little on the callous side when it came to his and Grants first time together. When you read that part you will know exactly what I am talking about. I just wasn’t really impressed by Ian at that point in time and how things went down. Overall though I liked this book and I will definitely check out any other books in this series that come out cause I really did like book two as well, so were two-for-two in this series.

Audio - Michael Pauley is a pretty steady narrator at this point and I never really have complaints with his work. This one was good like all the others I’ve heard from him so far. But I will say it wasn’t my favorite of his, idk if it was the story or what but the narration for this one just really didn’t grip me like I was hoping for. But i will say that I’ll still be getting book two if that’s produced so, there’s that... I liked the audio I just didn’t love it.

This was okay. It was nice at first, and somewhat enjoyable, and this wasn't exactly bad writing, so I rounded up instead of down for that.

But mostly this wasn't that good, and I started to skim a lot toward the last fourth of the book. I don't have much to say other than Grant and Ian were annoying at times when they didn't communicate over the smallest things, and even after they were all "we have to talk about things together, communicate" silly things happened like Ian not telling Grant about being sued even though he was bound to find out and found at the same afternoon anyway, so like, what was the point of not telling Grant?

Also, the sex scenes were just a little...not weird, but just not much put into them, I should say. I wasn't feeling much passion and chemistry during them.

I just didn't feel much overall in the end? This was all right, but that's about it? I wouldn't recommend it either, it just is very meh. It's not bad, and it has some good parts, but that's mostly in the beginning. This one just wasn't for me.

Nice

This was a cute easy story to read. I liked both characters and the Rainer family sounds fun. The story touched on a couple topics and the author did an ok job of addressing them!

I didn't enjoy the storytelling.

I felt like this took me a hundred years to finish because I really disliked the way the story was told. I couldn't get into it most of the time and frankly was rather annoyed: whole chapters of inner monologue that wasn't even that interesting!! Why??

I try not to be too harsh with authors because I know they put an effort to accomplish the books I get to read, but this was seriously terrible. I feel like there was nothing particularly special about the story. The MCs weren't convincing or steadfast, imo. There were too many small details to point out here but that definitely made this book tasteless for me. And when I say tasteless I mean that I bitched my way through this book. I highlighted the heck out of it just answering back to the characters thoughts or actions. It was a very spiteful process, don't know why.

I'm very disappointed because I really wanted to read book 2 of the series, but now I'm not so sure anymore. Will it be as tedious as this one? Plus, I had high hopes because the reviews about this are fairly good and the author says (in her bio) that she's an avid MM reader, so maybe I was expecting too much, but she definitely did not deliver.

The blurb on this one ticked off many of my must have's when choosing a book to read/review. Sports? check. Age gap? check. Best friends little brother? check check.
However, in Letting Go, I was a little let down. The idea of the story was solid, don't get me wrong. Ian, the black listed former sports star returns home to rebuild a camp that has long been forgotten. and Grant, the young, innocent man who is home for the summer, having recently finished school and waiting on his big break in the career he went to school for. Of course, as a child, Grant was so in love with the olde, sexy Ian. And now, of course, since they are both adults, that 8 year age difference is a non issue really. I just could not connect with Ian. Honestly....I just wasn't a fan, at all. Grant, I did feel for. He was sweet, innocent, and in love. But, ugh, just the two of them together really fell short for me.

Who doesn't like a someone falling for their best friends little bother.

With an 8yr age difference with the characters, it wasn't hard to imagine that the younger of the 2 crushed on his older brother best friend. When they both return home for different reasons, helping each other fix up the old camp grounds creates a bond that puts relationships to the test.

The author does a great job with building the story. The writing was great with no issues. I am curious as to other family members that we have met and their stories which I can't wait to read as the series proceeds.

Dreams really do come true! A person can grow up and find love with your childhood crush. Two very different men find their paths crossing at the best possible time. Friendship and attraction leads to a steamy connection that brings out the best of both men.

i loved the story-line that leads the reader on a satisfying journey. Grant and Ian are so good together that you will be rooting for them.

I loved Grant's family and i sure hope that we get Grant's brother Trevor's' story soon.

Letting Go, by Ashton Cade, not only is the start of what appears to be a fantastic new series, but it's also only of my favorite tropes, brother's best friend!

Grant grew up crushing on his brother's best friend, Ian. With an eight year age difference between the two men, Ian never returned the attraction until now.

This is a beautiful small-town romance, filled with a wonderful couple, and a enjoyable, loving family. Grant and Ian are so fun and sweet together. Their deep love for one another jumps off the page, but they have some obstacles in their way.

They have to deal with Grant's brother not wanting them together, paparazzi, rumors, and the fact that they have different life goals.

I love Ian's background, as he was a major league baseball player who spent his life hiding his attraction to men, and thus living a fake life. With Grant, this is the first time in his life that he can live authentically. With Grant he is actually happy and excited about the future. I love this.

Their story is beautifully written, hooking me from the very beginning, leaving me unable to put it down. The writing style is wonderful and has a great pace.

I find the lake and swimming scenes to be exquisite, as they are so intensive, beautiful, tender and accomplished. I absolutely loved these moments!

I am thrilled to have found this series by Ashton Cade and cannot wait to read about the others in the Rainier family. Thank you Ashton Cade for creating this fun and entertaining world!

I enjoyed this first novel about the Rainier family a lot! I love the best friend's little brother trope, and in this one the characters and the families, the setting, the writing flowing and plot not overly loaded with unnecessary drama like some books can be.. it all just plain worked for me. Grant and Ian are seemingly two very different people, but end up being perfect for each other. I loved their chemistry and the delicious sexual tension that built between them, and when they ignited? So hot! And yeah, there is not a ton of angst in this one (thank goodness, because sometimes I need a break from that), but that is not to say the road is completely devoid of bumps. It's not. And it touches on an issue that is so relevant and present in today's world. But it IS fun and warm and sweet and sexy and loving, and I want more from this family and these characters. Can't wait to see what Ashton Cade comes out with next.

Decided DNF this one(and not rate it) when I realized that one of the MC's was finishing up his last year of college. That makes him way too young for my reading tastes. So, I'm not finishing it. I'm just going to move on to book #2 in this series where the MC's are older.

Ian never expected his best friend's little brother to grow up into the attractive man that he has, but the attraction is undeniable between he and Grant. Ian isn't the player that he was while he played professional baseball. He's slowed down and has taken the time to figure out who he is and wants to be now that he's out of the spotlight and back home.

Grant is back home for the summer after graduating to spend time with his family while job hunting. He wasn't expecting to run into his teenage crush, Ian, or to want to spend so much time with him. Ian challenges him in a ways that makes his heart race. It takes them working together to help Grant overcome his fear of water to have that attraction burn hot and bright.

Trevor tries to talk Grant out of pursuing Ian, even goes as far to crash their weekend camping trip. Which doesn't work. I expected them to sneak about get all handsy but I was not expecting the outdoor sex. I expected tent sex. LOL. Of course they would get caught on the walk back by the older brother.

I expected more tension out of the situation but it wasn't something that I got. I apparently like a little more drama when it comes to the best friend's brother story line. This one was a sweet read though. They were kind and careful with each other. The honesty between them was refreshing. They worked together to come solutions for the issues that come along.

It did approach a topic that we see today in the media and I'm glad that Ian fought against what was happening to him. But, I personally, think it would have been a great story without that included. Did the outcome sweeten the story line for me? Oh, yes. I liked seeing how there was that happily ever after ending.

If you're looking for a quick, sweet read then this is one you'll want to pick it up and give it a read.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a nice story. Ian has never given his best friend’s little brother much of a thought until he sees him all grown up when he comes home from college. Grant thought he was over the pesky crush he has an Ian until he sees him again in person after years apart.

So, there was the typical reaction of not wanting to make his best friend upset that Ian “tried” to deny his attraction to Grant but that didn’t last too long and Ian is able to show Trevor how important Grant really is to him. They find that they need to stand strong together to weather the storm that’s coming.

I liked these characters and how they stood by each other both in different ways. Ian really needed Grant’s strength and support and he gave it to him without question. Grant needed someone who didn’t see him as “the baby”. While I liked these guys and the story in this book but I felt that it took a long time to get through the book for the length, I think that maybe the writing just didn’t flow so well for me but I think I’m going to stick with this series and see if it continues.

4 stars!!

I love the Rainier family!! I loved how close they were and how they had each others back no matter what.

Grant is back in town visiting for the summer after being guilted into it by his mom. He just finished up college and plans to move to the city at the end of summer to find a job. While at a barbecue he lays eyes on his childhood crush, Ian. If possible, Ian is even sexier now and he still wants him more than anything.

Ian is a retired baseball player and just moved back to his home town after a huge falling out with his team. He bought a old summer camp and has plans of remodeling it to its formal glory. He runs into Grant and can't believe his eyes. His best friends little brother is all grown up and sexy as hell. He wants him immediately but has to take it slow due to his friendship with Grant's brother and their age difference.

These two had an amazing connection and their chemistry was off the charts HOT! Letting Go really hooked me from the first page. There's some drama, laugh out loud moments, and HOT HOT HOT sex scenes in this book. Plus, it's very entertaining and fast paced. I throughly enjoyed reading Letting Go.

**AUDIOBOOK**

I really enjoyed this book. Michael Pauley narrated it wonderfully. I would really rate it a 4.5, but couldn't give it a full 5 stars..so I rounded down with my rating. Ian definitely had some issues when it came to coming out...not in the part of him being in denial about it himself, but in the way he was treated. It really left him with some emotional scars. & really, that was the main obstacle that had to be faced. Once Ian and Grant decided to try things out, there wasn't a whole lot of keeping things under wraps. Any problems really just came from Ian dealing with his stuff. I like that they came together to work things out and were able to find a way for them each to be happy without sacrificing their own dreams...although I don't know how I felt about Ian's career choices near the end. I felt like he gave up something he cared about too easily. I was hoping for more of an ending as there wasn't much of one. I am hoping that in this series we will get to see more of what Ian and Grant's future looks like.

Okay. I've given this book 5 stars bc I liked the book okay and look forward to the others, my only real problem with this book is just a personal pet peev of mine. Almost to the end of the book Grant becomes this overly nosey boyfriend. Everytime Ian's phone rings he's right there with the who, what, when, and where. Grant also gets upset if Ian makes any kind of "big" decision without him without knowing what decision he made first. I pushed through bc I gave Grant the excuse it was his first relationship, he was still young so clinginess (I can't think of another words for it) is kinda par for the course, it was really close to the end of the book, and it was a really small part of the book. I also wasn't a fan of the pushy sister and the overly protective mom who treated Grant like he was 12. I did like Trevor and can't wait to get to his book. This book was a good read and solid, can't wait to start the next one.

Letting Go is the first book in the Rainier Family series, a contemporary romance series set within a small town surrounded by a big family. Letting Go introduces us to the Rainier family when Grant comes back to Umberland after college. Grant’s expecting to spend a summer in Umberland visiting with his family and searching for a new job in the big city. What he’s not expecting is to start a summer fling with Ian, his brother’s best friend. Ian has recently retired from being a professional baseball player, but although he’s done with the limelight, soon he and Grant realize the limelight is not done with him. This was a fun and enjoyable book with great characters and exciting drama. I love the chaos the media storm brought and how the characters navigated that stressful situation. There was just the right amount of angst and sweetness balance which made this a successful romance in my opinion.

Grant returns to his hometown for the summer to make his mom happy before moving to the city to secure a job. While he is back home, he sees Ian, his brother's best friend, and his teen crush. Ian offers him the opportunity to help remodel the old camp for the summer. Ian left the baseball world behind and wanted peace to live his life.

Ian and Grant are two different men; Ian is a player and hasn't had a serious relationship, while Grant is meant for a long-term relationship. The chemistry between Ian and Grant is present from the beginning. I liked both Ian and Grant, and you could see how they tried to do the right thing throughout the book. What annoyed me about the two is throughout the whole book, they talk about communication, but they never actually communicate well between them. I think several misunderstandings wouldn't have happened if they had just spoken. Other than that, I liked Grants family, and I'll be interested in reading the next book in the series.

I really enjoyed this book, best friend's brother is a particular favourite troupe of mine. Grant is back home for the summer after graduating and comes face to face with his childhood crush, Ian, who is back in town after quitting pro baseball. At a family barbecue Ian begins to notice Grant too. Despite the 8 year age gap and the fact that he is not out yet and a warning from Grant's big brother and Ian's best friend, Trevor, he can't fight his feelings for long. Grant begins working on the renovation of a camp that Ian has bought to restore. The close proximity and spending so much time together gives them ample opportunity to bond and eventually give in to their feelings for each other.
This is a really sweet romance and I will be looking forward to more from this author.

Grant has always had a crush on his older brother’s best friend and former pro baseball player, Ian. When Grant returns home from college, Ian offers him a summer job. This really worked for me. The tropes - age gap, closeted sports star, big family / small town community, brother’s best friend - are all very familiar territory but they worked well together in this competently crafted, engaging, and steamy story. Both men have baggage which they help each other overcome and I loved the unfolding chemistry between them. Michael Pauley / Dean is alway such a compelling audio narrator - he speeds up and slows down so expertly to pump excitement, sorrow, or happiness into the text ... I’ve already purchased the second audio in the series!

What a fantastic Best Friends Brother story!

Ian and Grant can’t deny their attraction, especially since Grant has been crushing on Ian for a long time.
I love how they take charge with what they want. Not caring for the repercussions as their toughest critic will be Grants Brother, Trevor.
But the drama soon unfolds as the reason why Ian moves back to his hometown comes out and an old teammate makes accusations that could make or break them!

This book had a great mix of sass, swoony moments, humour and lots of sexy times and I cannot wait for the next book in The Rainier Family Novels!
I was hoping Trevor would be next, but looks like we could be getting Ryan! Either way I can’t wait! ❤️

What a debut novel from Cade! This was a quick, addictive read that had me falling in love with the Rainier family before we’d even hit the 25% mark! Ian and Grant were extremely cute together and I absolutely love the cliche of older brothers best friend crush turned love and Cade DEFINITELY delivered! It was the perfect combination of hot and sweet moments with the fantastic amount of drama to keep the pace moving. I can’t wait for more novels in this series to drop - I’m off to stalk Cade on social media now so I don’t miss the announcement!

Letting Go

For some reason I struggled to get through the first half of this book and just put it aside to finish another time. I really liked the characters and crazy family antics. There wasn’t any unnecessary drama. Once I picked it up to finish, it went quickly so it must have just been the mood I was in before. One thing I don’t like. The book ended and went immediately to a preview of the next book and from that to the epilogue. I don’t read previews for other books so if I hadn’t been scrolling through so I could see the pages, I would have completely skipped the epilogue. I have never seen the epilogue done this way and am not a fan.

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD

Writing wasn't great. I liked the characters well enough, but wasn't so impressed with the ending. I'm glad no one had to give up their dreams, but I wish they would have decided to run the camp together and be awesome gay dad camp counselors. I was weirdly invested in that happening. Oh well, maybe another book will give me that ending.

Anyways, aside from that I was pleasantly surprised by the book. It wasn't spectacular, but it kept my attention and the characters were good.

Sweet first love💖

Another great story. I like finding series like these with big families. Each book about someone different but related to and interconnected with the other characters it makes it personal and familiar.

This is the story of Grant and Ian. Ian is best friend with Trevor which is Grant older brother. Grant has been in love with Ian since he was 14 yrs old. They had not seen each for 8yrs until they both comeback to town. They start working together and from there on they start falling in love. Is a sweet, cute and sexy story.👬 💞
