The Warlord's Concubine: A Fantasy Romance

Rate this book
A slave, a Warlord, and one chance at love.
Mirella had spent her entire life in the shadows, sold from one person to another until she was bought by the Princess of Ariste City. She was a handmaid, nothing more, but she waited, biding her time until she could be free.

When the God-King lays claim to everything -- and everyone -- in the city, she sees her chance. If she could get him to fall in love with her, to see her as something more than a concubine or a handmaid, then she could rule the city that once owned her, at his side.

She didn't expect to fall in love with him. She didn't expect that the thought of him laying claim to her, dominating her, would arouse her as it did.

And she certainly didn't expect to find a hidden power within their coupling that might save them all.

If you love dominant alpha males and dark fantasy romance, The Warlord's Concubine is just what you're looking for.

DNF @ 22% ---- No stars because I don't rate books that I've not read all of.

Now.... lets's start with the insta-love. It was there and horrible. A 35 year old woman just falls in love at first sight with this man-God thingy.... As much as I hate it in YA books that at least makes a little more sense where hormones are running wild and all that jazz but still.

Then... I thought this was going to be a romance not an erotic story. Because not only does she fall in love with him at first sight, she will do ANYTHING for him, telling him she wants to have his children that will be greater than another else in the world other him because his power and glory knows no bounds.... some weird stuff.

Lastly, so they are getting down and she says that he's so big he doesn't even fit all the way inside her but then he's just slamming away roughly as fuck and she's loving it. He doesn't even do anything to her yet just the sight of him naked is enough to make her lose it. Honestly, it disgusted me. How on earth could that even be pleasurable? I mean, you're crying the whole time yet it still gets your rocks off. I don't know. I just know I never want to even think about this book again.

Mirella sees the arrival of conquering forces as making her equal to her former master, the Princess

This was one of those stories that starts in a world just different enough from our own that I felt I had to accept on faith a few character traits, and qualities, I was not sure how I felt about up front, and take on faith that if I did not let them turn me off I would be rewarded with a good story. That gamble paid off!!

As the deceptive blurb implies, a bit crudely, the God-king / Warlord is a dominant, determined, man... and while there were times early on when I wondered where Mirella was coming from, by the end I felt he had at least begun to prove himself. For me she was the more complex and better filled out character who we came to understand better as the story unfolds. In a heartbeat she went from being the handmaiden of a Princess time sitting side by side with the Princess in the Concubine's tent, making them suddenly equal. As Mirella then found her footing the story became more interesting.

I was gifted with a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review, and enjoyed the ending it came to, but would also enjoy reading more in this world. I debated on how many stars to give the story, but when I realized how curious I am what else might unfold for this characters, and how much I had enjoyed the unexpected twists during the rebellion I settled on four.
