Stay alive at all costs. No attachments, no looking back, no emotion.

The last thing my father gave me was a key. No explanation, no details, just a key. The last thing he asked of me was to take the key to a set of co-ordinates. But survival in a fallen world filled with Feral isn't easy. The Fangs and the Claws, once upstanding members of society are now slave to the virus, hunting indiscriminately under a perpetually full moon.

There is no hope. There is no haven. Not alone. Not until them.

They are a new breed of monster—beasts of both fang and fur. Unaffected by the sickness, they crave only one thing, and it runs through my veins. Survive, my father said. Look out for no one except yourself. But sometimes the only way to survive is to make attachments. Sometimes the only way to live is to accept a dance with death. And right now, for me, the path to survival is in the blood.
Here’s to hoping it doesn’t kill me.

This series is advertised as The Walking Dead meets The Vampire Diaries, and…… yep, that’s spot on. It also has some Maze Runner vibes.

Two teens travel across a post-apocalyptic wasteland in search of a promised safe haven, where the heroine has been tasked by her late father to deliver a special key. They’re on the run from feral vampires and werewolves and vampire-werewolf hybrids (?), not to mention the ancient man-eating swamp beasts and sacrifice-prone human cults lurking out there. They with a gang of genetically engineered fae-vampire-werewolf…thingies… and forge a shaky alliance.

With a strong, morally grey heroine, a fast-paced plot, and a slowburn romance, this has all the makings of a Helen-2.0-approved urban fantasy series.

Re: the fae-vampire-werewolf gang…

You might surmise that the worldbuilding felt a little confused. The author throws a lot of terms at us without stopping to explain any. I’m a big proponent of only adding as much worldbuilding as is necessary to move the plot forward, but in this case, when understanding the plot hinges on understanding what the hell a Claw and a Feral and a Feral Claw and a non-Feral Fang etc etc is, you’re going to have to stop and explain at least once.

FIVE STARS BECAUSE FUCK YES THIS WAS GOOD.

Gaby if you’re reading this, thank you for the recommendation.

Ugh, where to start. I’ll post my initial thoughts below:

Am I team Tobias? I can’t decide.

(I am certainly TEAM. ASH.)

A LOT of Walking Dead vibes but whatever we will roll with it.

I have to say, in the stories where the MC is at first wary of the men that she may hate now but in just the span of however many pages (depends on the author) they’re gonna be balls deep inside her, always has me laughing. Such a fun part to read, if not slightly annoying.

You may hate them now little Eva BUT SOON ENOUGH their cocks will be THRUSTING into you as you scream your undying love for them.

Again, laughing.
It’s bound to happen.
BUT NOT IN THIS SHORT BOOK.
Nah, we got a slow burner in our hands y’all.

Ugh. The anticipation is killing me.

But I’m liking this Eva chick.
The way this author portrays her CLINGING to her humanity has me remembering to always stay humble in dire times. (Like at the gym when all of the machines are taken and homie on the squat rack is on his phone for 10 minutes between each set.)

Again, humanity.
I feel this will be an important theme of this series.

Upon the what-weapon-belongs-to-who:
Metal bat with barbs? NEEGAN IS THAT YOU?
Again, Walking Dead vibes are strong.

Oh this book is so short AND SO GOOD AND I NEED MORE. More, damnit.

The SUSPENCE.
I can’t.
I love this book.
CLING TO HUMANITY EVA!
(And cling onto the men, please).

Evaluation of the men:
Ash: again, I am L-O-V-I-N-G the fact that he has a slight imperfection. Mute. And yet his message gets across so well, with so much emotion. Take notes, authors! Not all men of the harem have to be straight A Perfect with a capital P.
Logan: ah yes, the cocky asshole that is actually a teddy bear. Predictable but needed.
Jace: my opinion is not much right now, I need more of him. He’s the goody one, I get it. My vote is dick piercings. It’s the quiet ones you gotta watch out for.
Noah: bring it onnnnnn beast boy. Do with me as you wishhhhhh.
(I love him)

So book two is out in Feb. I’m betting on Ash getting across the finish line first, just saying.

This review will be a bit excessive on the

fair warning has been given

So Debbie I have a question for you ...
are you writing books just for me now?
First you give us a great UF in City of Demons with dragons and a wonderful psycho named Seb.
Then you change it up and write a fantasy with undertones of beauty and the beast with Captive of Darkness
Now you write a post apocalyptic world with vampires and zombie shifters...
and I know you have a sci-fi space adventure in the works...

So yea you sure you're not writing these just based on what I love most??

Its this post apocalyptic world that is always a winner for me, zombie shifters means you know there is gonna be lots of action and running for your life/hiding during daylight.
Add that together with some vampire hunks = no sleep for me

This was beautiful in its simplicity
- girl looses best friend to feral shifters (ok so they aren't actually zombies but close enough)
- girl end up with Vampires who vant to suck her bludddd
- girl goes on a mission to save friend
- girl falls for vampires

Luckily for Eva there is a shortage of woman in the new world, hooray for reason #1 to have a harem

No unexplained Alien metal spiders popping up for no reason, or complicated Nephilim explanations etc etc and that is what I love most about this one!

For the Blood or how a 260 pages book feels like barely 100.
Apocalypse books are kind of my favorite trope and I kind of feel cheated about how long it felt.
But I also kind of feel meh about everything else, I cannot seem to enjoy Debbie Cassidy's books as much as I did before.

This one...took me by surprise. Very well done, strongly action orientated, especially considering it's a reverse harem. The well crafted plot really does seem like a hybrid between walking dead, but I would leave out the Vampire Diaries comparison because it doesn't fit (to me) at all. You get vampires of sorts, but it's not anything like Vampire Diaries (thankfully).

A couple of key points:

1. The Let's Dance, I'll Lead fight scene = epic for some reason. Can't get it out of my head.
2. I love Ash
3. The way she meets Ash and the boots in the night leading up to it, the little things make all the swoon difference
4. Logan really is a douche
5. Mad science experiments
6. I have a bad feeling about Tobias, we'll see in future books.

Gripping, couldn't put it down and it ended up costing me over an hour of sleep. Le sigh.

The story is strongly action paced and there's plenty of tense moments. I'm not a huge zombie fan in general but these aren't traditional and the author incorporates them well in a non-cheesy manner that's just intriguing. The world is bleak and ended, it's been after a big fall and destruction of everything mankind knows.

Here monsters exist, and they reign.

The romance is in the beginning paces, so this is a slow-burn and more realistic sort. The main character is sassy, fun, strong, determined - sometimes almost too mean for my tastes but she has the soft spot trying to conflict with her warrior nature that endears her to me. And let's face it, tough stuff leads to tough people when they're survivors, and she'd already been fighting awhile before the book opens it's first window into this twisted world.

Well done and recommended.

I appreciate that this wasn’t your run of the mill zombie/apocalypse read. The world was cohabited by humans and a variety of supernaturals, of course until a virus dum dum dum ruins life as they all knew it. The population of human women is decimated and one girl (though not the only girl, trust me she has enough problems) holds the literal key to saving the world-unbeknownst to her of course. For years Eva’s father trained her to survive in the world until his death four years ago. On the run with her bestie and crush Tobias, the two are on their way to a possible safe haven and human colony. Of course living in the after comes with its dangers from monsters to fellow humans. Along they way they run into some snags and in Eva’s case it’s a group of guys in need of a blood donor, guys who once upon a time Eva would have killed without a thought. This was definitely slow burn as Eva gets to know and Love hate them all. Ash in particular stood out to me and he was all sweet cuddly and fangy. They all have to gang together first to rescue Tobias and then to finally after years of waiting discover what plans her father had for her. I mean she only has the key to the cure, the way to save the world and end the apocalypse. No pressure or anything lol. This was a good start to the series, I’d like to see a little more action believe it or not and more character development particularly around each of the guys. Looking forward to where it goes next.

pretty good post apocalyptic read. Here it's werewolves and vampires who get the virus or whatever and go zombie esque crazy although I think they're not actually zombies. Humans just get the virus and die. And by consequence are not good eating at least for vampires. Vampires are the ones that the heroine falls in with. Thank goodness this is super slow burn. I'm done with the first book and no one has hopped in bed ignoring the precarious state of the world around them. So actual story not just a sex fest.
A couple of cons, at least for me is that ALL the fairy tale peeps are here. Do we have to have werewolves and vampires and fey and ogres and just the whole bucket in every UF type book? Narrow it down sometimes people.

I liked it enough that I will probably go on with the series.

*3.5*

Despite the cover that had a YA feel to it, this story was surprisingly good. No steam, but decent world building and a bevy of unique characters. I enjoyed the mashing of genres here, world has vampires (fangs) and werewolves (claws), djinn, and fae and a part ogre.

I liked that we didn’t get the info dump, it was gently fed throughout the journey. Eva was a great lead, a strong, take-no-shit badass female. I loved that she could hold her own, and dang, her sword fighting to music in her head was excellent. Tobias and Ash were my favorite of the men. Ava describes Tobias as
He was kind and compassionate and gallant, and I’d done my best not to allow him to see how these traits would not keep him alive in this fucked up world.
I liked how she meets Ash, and how she has to find another way to communicate with him because of his disability. He’s such a big scary teddybear.

This was an above average apocalyptic, dystopian, pnr, reverse harem (although not in this first book), urban fantasy.

Proper review to come nearer release date, but this a great start to a new series that feels darker than the author's previous work.

Great concept, kick ass heroine and an intriguing group of guys!

EDIT:

4.5 upon contemplation.

The RH genre can get pretty samey, if I'm honest. But one thing I have really come to love from Debbie Cassidy is that she has a massive diversity in the types of RH she writes.

Firstly we had brilliant Urban Fantastic with the Chronicles of Midnight and Arcana series', then dark fairy tale fantasy with Captive if Darkness and now dystopian!!!

I highly recommend this series for either fans of RH or just people in general! The MC is kick ass (of course) but has huge emotional walls she's had to build to survive in the harsh reality she has been forced to live in. I love the take on the usual vampire/werewolf/zombie mythology and the romance builds at a good, but believable pace.

Pick up this book (and then all the others!)

Surprisingly excellent

I went into this thinking it would bore me and I probably a bit finish it. I did finish, enjoyed it, and am about to start the next.

The plot is a little Walking Dead goes to Atlanta CDCish, but it works. The characters are interesting and the story moved fast. Eva is pretty badass. Tobias is too boring and will probably die. Noah seems focused, but I am not sure what else to think about him yet. I love Ash and everything single thing about him. Logan is an asshole, but I think he may be redeemable and they will end up together maybe. Jace is the good natured one who laughs and jokes and makes everyone comfortable, yet I think he is weak for not helping Eva with Logan/can situation, but maybe he will also redeem himself somehow.

hmm...so...

I'm not entirely sure what to say about this one. It was interesting for sure, but also very lacking. I read some reviews before going into this that gave me high expectations, perhaps that was my downfall. I'm really not sure how I feel.

I found myself more intrigued by the characters than the story, so let's go through them 1. Eva: She's cool, she's badass, I kinda like that she has some issues with morality. I can't say she's charmed me though. 2. Tobias: He's a sweetie, I can't say we saw much of him though. Because of this, I'm finding it hard to get a good read on him (and believe that Eva has feelings for him). 3. Ash: I like this boy. I'm definitely charmed. He's definitely the character that has me the most interested. 4. Jace: Hmmm, he's nice but definitely think he might have a dark side. 5. Logan: He's a cheeky bugger and I can't say I like him per se, but as if being the opposite of Jace, I think he might have a soft side that'll surprise us.

I might give the next book a go and hope that it grabs me more than this one did. If that doesn't work out, I'll have to dnf this series.

Okay this isn't my type of book. I found it boring and predictable. Daddy gave her a key, and it's the key to the cure. Her partner and almost lover is taken and she makes a deal with a group of Vamps with the secret plan of using them to get Tobias back but of course it back fires. I feel the book has too much misery. A few good memories or a sweet moment between her and Tobias would have made the book so much better.

The blurb on this one intrigued me, but as I read it it was a bit confusing. I wasn't sure if the big bad was zombies or some kind of shifter, at 1/3 of the way through you'd think things would be made clear. Eva and Tobias came off as bumbling idots that were lucky. I gave up after 10 chapters, things just weren't interesting enough to keep me reading, this one just wasn't for me.

Nothing not to like here. Fast paced and short. You really can’t go wrong with Debbie Cassidy if you love reverse harem, action, and battle-ready/strong female mc’s. I love Ash and I am looking forward to the next, particularly getting to to know more about these characters.

I don’t usually gravitate towards dystopian books, but this time I’m glad I did.
Even though the reviews were high, I still didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did. Finished it in a few hours. I’m not sure if it was because the story was short, or if it was because it was so good I devoured it at hyper speed.
The better the book, the faster I seem to read them.
Loved the h in this story. It was fast pace and action pact from the very beginning.

It's more of a 3.5⭐, but felt like giving it 4 because it really grew on me towards the end and I see a great potential in the following books.

Premise: I'm not a big fan of the first part because it was too rushed, too much action without context...I was nearly at 50% and couldn't remember the heroine name or what kind of creatures we were actually fighting.

BUT, everything after the meeting with the vampires was pleasantly good, I liked all the characters (I might have a thing for both Ash and Logan).
The pace settled, I began to understand both the psychology and the biology (😂) of them all, I invested in the plot and also the infinite possibilities of romance.

I think I'll continue very soon with book 2!

Action Packed

This one is action packed and drops us right in the thick of it. I kinda like that but I kinda dislike it bc it took a while for Eva to give us the lay of the land. So somethings could be confusing. I’m interested in where this goes especially after all the biting. It’ll be interesting to see if Eva herself is the cure like I think she is. I so far find the dichotomy between all the men being the monsters fascinating. They have a humanity ish to them but baser instincts that can rule and control them too. I’m interested in where this all ends up going.

Zombie apocalypse with supes, sounds fun right? Well, it is, we have a badass FMC killing "Fangs" and "Claws" with a katana like Michone from The Walking Dead who gets wrapped up with a group of guys that need blood to survive and she's just become their walking talking food source, but kickass FMCs don't just let people take from them without getting something in return so now they guys have to help her with her super scary important mission/s.

A lot is happening in this book and I'm loving the possibilities this series could have.

I would have given book 1 a better review but some of the world-building has been confusing to say the least. I'm following the confusing mix of supes, infected supes, lab created supes, and ancient rebirthed supes fairly well considering the level of confusion I think I just demonstrated.

Sadly, none of that helped me understand what I'm referring to as the "Subject 14 incident" where nothing made sense nor was it explained, at the end of the chapter that wrapped up the "Subject 14" incident one of the characters actually said something along the lines of "What Happened" or "Where are you going" and I'm thinking good F'n question but no one answered him or explained WTH had just happened. Just a giant question mark left over that little side plot and not in the 'future answers to come as we unravel the mystery plot' kind of way, No the FMC and most of the other characters seems to fully understand what had happened but failed to properly explain it to us the readers.

All in All, I'm willing to give book 2 a try because this has a ton of good storytelling potential, we will see how that works out for me...

This was so much better than I thought it would be. My expectation were so low and I am actually shocked are how good it was. Especially considering there was no spice, like at all, but that didn’t affect the book for me.

This book was quite short as well, which I really liked, cause my attention span can be that of a toddler, but I didn’t get bored once.

Reading the book and looking at the cover is a little confusing though. I expect 2 men in the harem, but there might be 4, maybe 5. I really don’t know at the point.

Ash is a definite
Tobias is a most likely
Jace is a probably, but the brother also has to be onboard
Logan is a ‘in the right high pressure situation’
Noah is a ‘if he doesn’t kill me first’ so I’m not sure about this one

Great read, great plot.
I don’t give 5⭐️s unless I go back and re-read the book, which I think I might.

I loved this book and it's a 4.5 stars book rounded up to five stars.

I enjoyed the strong heroine, who is morally grey, while trying to do everything to not loose her morals. But Tobias, who grew up her, helps her to stay grounded.

The world is an apocalyptic world combined with a fantasy world (vampires, werewolfes, fae and other beings). What do you do to survive an apocalypse and safe the world? I hope the other book of this series will answer this question!

I'm intrigued and look forward to reading more.

Eva was likable. She is a strong female who knows that she can't give a crap about everything going on around her if she wants to stay alive, but is still willing to sacrifice her life for a few things she believes in. She has had to fight really hard to get to the co-ordinates her dad left her before he died and it shows in the way she thinks about things.

Let's talk about the men in this series. I don't really feel like I KNOW any of them yet, but from what I do know so far I have a few thoughts. I'm not quite sure if I want Tobias to be found. I mean, it would be nice for him not to be dead at the hands of the feral fang, but I don't totally have a strong preference for him to make it back into the story or not. I really like Ash. In fact, I liked him from the moment he was introduced, there was no time needed to like him. I need to find out more about Jace. He kinda just IS at the moment with no real feelings on my part for or against him. Logan comes off as a bit of an ass, but I don't dislike him. Noah grew on my over time, but I like him and want to know more about him. I see multiple sparks forming.

The plot drew me in and I feel like the information that we have gotten so far has been enough for me to get into the storyline, but there is definitely some more world building to be done. The action is strong in FOR THE BLOOD and starts pretty quickly upon starting to read. It did take me a chapter or two to get into the story as it took me a bit to figure out what was happening, but I had no problem staying in once I was there. I plan to read more from this series.

Action packed!

This is a slow burn urban fantasy RH that fills a dystopian void in a sublime way. The supernatural are real, and they’ve been decimated by a virus that has turned them feral.... and their food is the humans who once ruled this world. It’s a fast paced, action packed adventure that sees a slow moving romance wrap around an intriguing mystery - all with the flair of danger and blood Cassidy is known for.

Pros:
- Great world building.
- No info dump, even for a book 1.
- The questions alone will pull you to book 2.
- What’s more dangerous? A hungry monster, or a desperate human?

Cons:
- honestly not sure if I’m MEANT to like any of these guys aside from Ash.
- is survival against the cost of morality worth it? This isn’t a con to the narrative, but an uncomfortable question it makes you ask. Most of will answer from the view of privilege.... because most of us will never really know. And if you do? I’m sorry.

This author's books always read like television series to me - since I love TV this is fantastic! This series takes place following a virus that has created zombie-like creatures, and mutated other, previously known about creatures. Eva is the heroine, and she is definitely the kind of tough gal with a soft spot that I love from these kinds of TV shows. The potential harem members are all mysterious and attractive; I love that one is mute and uses sign language to communicate. I've always liked a "vampire" hero and I never get tired of the conflict that craving/needing blood provides in romances involving them. As the blurb states this series is, "The Vampire Diaries meets The Walking Dead" and since I am a fan of both shows, and post-apocalyptic stories in general, this was a great read and I am definitely looking forward to book two.

This book is an epitome of the phrase “hit the ground running”. It doesn’t easy you into the situation, I loved it. But, I must say, for a moment there I thought that maybe I skipped a chapter or a book 😂. I actually had to go back and check. The good thing is even with that fast pace where I hadto catch it by a tail, I was still not lost.
