Cute book aimed at young readers. Mariella and her friends are burgeoning detectives. After one of their teachers thinks she sees a ghostly guinea pig outside of her home, the girls try to figure the mystery out. I read it because I love guinea pigs, but I also had a lot of fun. I love the little detective-related asides strewn throughout the book. And, most of the advice related to piggies is pretty sound.
Finally I have the whole series (well... the books that are out currently) and I can read it.
So this is how it all started! While the Spaghetti Yeti book told us some stuff, and also made it seem that you don't need knowledge about the previous books, I still was very curious as to how it all began. In this book our gang takes on a case, a very spooky case. The case of the Ghostly Guinea Pig! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you heard that correctly. Ghostly + Guinea Pigs. Scaring people (Though why would people be scared of such cute little ghosts?), leaving trails everywhere and more.
I really loved the mystery and trying to solve it, a reason why I love these kind of books, they let you solve the mystery alongside of the characters. There is casefiles, witness reports, small hints dropped throughout the book and more. It was great fun to puzzle all the parts together and see if we could find out why there were glowing guinea pigs going through the town of Puddleford. Unlike the Spaghetti monster where I found out what was going on and who the culprit was, this one was a bit trickier. I knew the secret to the guinea pigs soon, but I didn't know how and what until near the end when I had some suspicions. The ending was fun though and I really had a laugh at what the solution to the whole thing was. :)
Mariella is a great character, smart and brave and I like her friends too. I don't like her brother that much. He was quite annoying and I just wanted to erase him from the story. I wish Mariella's parents kept a closer eye on that annoying little brat.
I loved the Mystery HQ, it is not often that you read about girls having a mystery headquarters in a tree house.
The illustrations were once again great and enhanced the story to make it seem even more fun. I really liked the young sleuth pages in-between the story and also all the other little illustrations that dotted the pages.
This is one book I would really recommend to all. If you are looking for a book about mystery with a wonderful character, then I would say that you should try this one out.
This is a gorgeously presented story, quirkily illustrated by the author, which makes it an engaging package for 'emerging readers' as the text is broken up and isn't intimidating. At the same time, it would easily sustain the interest of more confident readers looking for something fun. I know my avid reader 9 year old will love this series! I genuinely enjoyed reading it and it would easily serve as a shared read for less confident readers (and the story could probably be enjoyed by 6 yr olds as a read-aloud).
Mariella Mystery is a fabulous creation and her voice shines through the novel beautifully. She's what you might call a 'take charge' kind of girl (we won't say bossy...) and tells her story in a very no nonsense way. The book is presented as her "young super sleuth's journal", with occasional highly entertaining extracts from "The Young Super Sleuth's Handbook", and 'case reports' from her investigations [teacher-mode aside: I could imagine using this book with an upper primary group to talk about fiction and non-fiction and simply to enjoy the story!]. Mariella is clearly the leader of her little gang, the Mystery Girls, although her friends Poppy and Violet are not mere passive sidekicks. Little girls will love this book and there is plenty of good role model stuff here; it's definitely a weak-female-character-free zone!
The plot is ever so slightly mad in the best possible way. The ghostly guinea pigs are never genuinely portrayed as threatening or scary, and the conclusion leaves the reader with nothing to be afraid of, in the best Scooby Doo tradition.
Overall, this is a great package for the target age range, and I would absolutely recommend it. I'll be reviewing the second in the series, Mariella Mystery Investigates a Cupcake Conundrum, soon.
The Ghostly Guinea Pig is the first funny mystery story starring Mariella Mystery and her friends (the Mystery Girls). The Mystery Girls find themselves in the middle of an investigation following claims that people have seen ghostly guinea pigs in the town center! Can they uncover the mystery of the ghostly guinea pigs? And are the ghostly guinea pigs a danger to everyone in the town?
The story is so funny and the mystery is very cleverly included. It is not completely apparent who the culprit is, and kids will love trying to work out who did it as they read the book. This format of this book makes it an easy and enjoyable read. The pages are laid out like a diary, with lots of illustrations and text broken into paragraphs. Because of this, the Mariella Mystery stories would be suitable for a wide range of children to read, especially those who may struggle to pay attention to books.
This book is also accessible to many ages. The diary format and illustrations help to make the book easier to read. On the whole, the language used in this book is simple, and difficult words or phrases are given a definition that children will understand. This book is perfect for children to read independently, although it is enjoyable enough for parents to also enjoy reading it with their children.
Ideal for: children aged 7-12 years old, including children who struggle to concentrate when reading.
Mariella is part of the Mystery Girls with two of her friends. They like to solve mysteries. Their teacher has seen what appears to be the ghost of her deceased guinea pig in her garden. The Mystery Girls set out to investigate this strange phenomenon while also preparing for the talent show. Following the trail of the guinea pig leads them to many strange events but nothing keeps Mariella away from solving her case.
There are many pencil drawing throughout the book which add interest. But on many pages, I felt like there were too many illustrations, distracting me from the mystery.
The mystery itself was extremely interesting and kept me guessing until the very end. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a more simple lay out. I had to stop often to look at pictures or side information. This book is advertised as an early chapter book starting at grade 2. But I think early readers will have a more difficult time with the cluttered layout. I would recommend this book for grade 3-5.
From the cover I had expected this mystery series to be for much younger readers. The main character, however, is nine years old and attends fifth grade. The text level is accordingly but somehow I am not sure whether upper primary students will be attracted to the book. The journal style with lots of illustrations is quite cute and yet, for me it felt that text level and illustration style didn't match as the book would be much more appealing to younger readers. Nevertheless,I will definitely get a copy and let my students decide. It's definitely nice to see a mystery / detective series with a female main character. Kids will appreciate the step-by-step instructions and tips on how to be a super sleuth. The story as such was okay but didn't really knock me off my feet. Lots to learn about guinea pigs though.
A cute mystery that follows Mariella and her friends Poppy and Violet as they try to solve the mystery of "Ghostly guinea pig" sightings AND prepare for a talent show.
