Can the new psychologist in town help him treat a ghostly trauma case or is his growing attraction to Katherine Fleming best left buried?

With the help of a mysterious white cat and a mystic mirror, Katherine and Jake join forces to solve a murder. Can they stop a killer from claiming the next victim or will their investigation only lead them six feet under?

"You're my good girl now."
When newly graduated counsellor, Catherine Flemming, lands a job with a respected firm in Florida, she delights in the prospect of warmer days and gathering clients of her own. A chance meeting with a chatty local broadcaster gives her the opportunity of free advertising by being interviewed by popular Parker Pratt. Her programmed interview follows that of Miss Harmony, a dubious psychic who claims that it is not she but her sleepy white cat who is the actual communicator with the dead. When Miss Harmony decides suddenly to leave town, her cat is left behind and inherited by Catherine.

Jake Summit, detective, is very troubled. A recent shooting incident has him on paperwork assignments only until being passed as fit for active duty and he is miserable about the delay. Especially as he thinks he might have shot the wrong man despite everyone else believing it was a righteous kill. And then there is his house. Bought only a month before at an auction, it is already driving him crazy with strange temperature changes, sounds and flashing lights. Is he going mad, or is the house actually haunted?
When Jake and Catherine meet, there is an instant attraction, but first they will have to find and stop a serial killer no one had known was there.

This is a fun story, well presented, with a mix of genres from murder mystery, through gentle romance to psychic cats and things that go bump in the night. Sometimes creepy, often funny, it works because the characterisation, though stereotypical, is good. The who-dun-it? later turns to ahow-to-proove-it? but the gentle jollity never stops.
Narrated by Ruth Redman, the text flows along at a natural pace. Her reading is clear, pleasant and well intoned. Her character voices are also distinctive and appropriate. A good choice to recount this book.

My thanks to the rights holder of Good Bones who, at my request, freely gifted me a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. It is a light-hearted read with just a touch of the unpleasant horrors of serial killings. Hard to classify, it really is an eclectic mix of genres.

To begin, I want to state that I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Everything that follows is an honest opinion and I wasn't compensated in any way for this review.

Now with that out of the way, what grabbed me right off the bat was the title and blurb. A good old ghost story with an old house and mystery doesn't seem all that abnormal. It is a fairly common theme. That said, I'm a sucker for a ghost story.

L.A. Kelley not only did a good job at the creep factor, but added humor into her text, AND added a bit of something different that made the story memorable. I am constantly talking about the books I'm currently reading to my best friend. Usually, the ones that get the most airtime though are the ones I really enjoy or the ones I really hated.

Good Bones I REALLY enjoyed. I think I actually loved this book. It's a book that I plan on getting my mom to read. I want more of this world and I want more of L.A. Kelley's works.

Then there is the narration by Ruth Redman. Her voice is calm, collected, and I genuinely felt the main character in her narration. It was the perfect pick for this book. I can see myself listening to her voice again in another project.

All in all, this was a good book and I definitely recommend be it visual or audio.

Final rating: 4.5/5

Disclaimer.
I had requested and received audible version of this book for free from the narrator, in exchange for an unbiased review.

What I liked about the book -
Now this is what I call a "cozy" mystery. There's mystery and suspense, but it's no super tense / grim. It is fun. If you are having a bad / tiring week and just want to wind down, pick this book up. This will keep you guessing what's going to happen next and make you chuckle at some silliness here n there. The characters are so fun and memorable. The story is structured well, with several side-plots and all of them are paced well. I never got confused about what's happening. I enjoyed the whole book.

What I disliked about the book -
Nothing specific that I can think of.

Narration -
Narration by Ruth Redman was a good match for the content. She made everything sound all that more interesting and kept me hooked to the story.

I enjoyed the whole concept of a psychologist using her skills to assist a ghost. Such an original idea. Katherine is a psychologist who gets entangled with a detective Jake. Jake buys an older house that needs a little work but he feels is worth it until he's haunted by a ghost. At first he's freaked out and even moves out of the house until he meets Katherine and they decide maybe the ghost isn't all bad. At the same time there's a budding romance between them.

The author does a great job in developing the characters and furthring the plot. There were a few twists, some I expected but also a wow! No spoilers here, you have to read it! The plot itself has layers keeping my listening ears invested. The narrator has a natural flow with the story and a good cadance.

This isn't just a great ghost story but a really amazing cozy mystery!

Ok, so the main characters are a counseling psychologist, a homicide cop, and a psychic cat. Sounds like the beginning of a crazy joke. Actually, it's the setup to a really great crime/ghost story with a bit of romance and a serial killer thrown in for good measure! Kelley takes all that craziness and makes it amazingly smooth and chilling. The story grabs you in the very beginning with a hysterical coffee house conversation that is not at all what it seems and keeps you guessing until the very end. There is a cast of supporting characters that add dimension and depth, but it's all about or trio and the ghost who are all deeply connected. It's a wonderful book about redemption, justice, forgiveness, and truth. You gotta read it to get the whole thing...just do it! It's got great bones!

Well written! I've read almost everything (one yet that I haven't gotten around to) that L.A. Kelley has written. I enjoyed this one as much as anything she's done, though my absolute favorite is her 'Rimrider' series.
She does a good job introducing the characters, making them interesting from the get-go. As I read, finding it harder to put down the farther in I went, the tension mounted. The timing of the whole story was great, and I came away from a very satisfying ending, happy again to have discovered this author.
I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for my unbiased review, which I jumped at when offered the chance, of course! To be honest, I wouldn't have hesitated to buy it if that hadn't happened, lol! She's currently at the top of my list of favorite indie authors.

I couldn't put this book down. Gripping. A ghost invades a cop's new house, and she's so rambunctious he can't move in. Worse, he can't tell anyone because they'll laugh at him. Two chance encounters with a psychologist (a really cute meet) leads him to ask for her help. Little did either of them know they were opening a huge can of worms. Katherine and Jake are well-drawn, likable characters, each is vulnerable (Jake more so). Two secondary characters add a little levity to a tense situation. A serial killer is on the loose in this small town. And the ghost is determined no other woman will go through what she did. I found it fascinating that when Katherine talks to the ghost, she's transported to the scene of a crime. L.A. Kelley ramps up the tension with each scene. A real page-turner.

What a clever and compelling story! Super interesting, kept my interest from beginning to end. Psychology, ghosts, mystery suspense, cat and murder - it's a great story that has it all. Well written and loved the narrator as well, great job! I'd definitely love to hear more by both author and narrator :)

Audible UK:I found this book a bit disjointed at first.Once I got into it I really liked it.That being said, the 'reason' for the killings came off a bit lame to me.Ruth Redman was a fine narrator.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.

interesting, thrilling, yet light

In an unusual trio of detectives, a cat, a psychologist, and a police detective, with the help of an apparition in a mirror, find and stop the killer of young women.
