Traditional eating habits are a delicious roadmap to a happier, healthier, kinder you. Our ancestors have a lot to teach us about hearty eating habits that not only focus on health but also the pleasure that food can bring to our lives.
This book is an amalgamation of many of those old-school ideas that modern nutrition is now trying to catch up with. It is an enticing guide to inculcate time-tested food habits so we can develop a healthy lifestyle and even more importantly, rediscover the enjoyment of food.
Consider yourself lucky that you get this kind of book to review. Self-help books usually are less preferred on top of that if it's on food and fitness. People avoid such books as long as they are forced to read due to deteriorating health. Kavita Devgan has given us the opportunity to read it when we are hale and healthy. And starting these habits can make our healthy sprint longer. Coming back to my earlier statement why this health book would be interesting? To know the reason reach our review further.
Most healthy food books focus more on what not to do and less what to do? (Which is usually against our daily habit.) And frankly speaking, our mind is a devil, when it encounters something with which it is not comfortable it will make it boring. Kavita has brought out what to do more which we might be doing consciously or unconsciously because of habit set by our parents/grandparents. Within those activities which can affect us diversly, Kavita has shown the way how to alter it to our benefits with minimum discomfort. For example, she has insisted to select a better option among, sweets (usually dietician blindly forbade it)
The book contains mini-stories, not actually stories, but some advice that won't take much of our time but can help us tremendously. If you don't have time to read the whole book you can read them along with section discussed next.
Easiest and quickest recipes were given at the end of the book. I have added many of them to my "To-Try" list of recipes, will surely try and add to my regular diet.
Having said that it is a self-help book, so it must insist us to unlearn some of our bad habits and if we want to have a healthy life. We should at least give them a try. A must read and must have book for households & health freaks.
1. 'The value of a friend as well as health is realized only when they are lost.' (Page 1)
2. 'When you scrutinize a food too much, you are bound to find something amiss, or rather construct an anomaly using half baked evidence.' (Page 68)
Rating - 4.5 Stars
Plot Summary - Traditional eating habits are a delicious roadmap to a happier, healthier, kinder you.
My Review - Aha!! So finally a Book that will make us eat healthily but without being tasteless. Yes! less believable right so does this book says. This book is what one can say is a day to day health improvement manual with all the basic cultural tips, our grandparents and parents use to tell us since the age we didn't even know how to speak up to avoid those foods. The book has many chapters regarding different food items which were the most of the basic things a decade old generation used to follow but with the rise of Processed food and packages goods, the next generation started to avoid them. 'Why eat Garlic when we got Garlic capsules to eat?' This is what the current generation mostly thinks of. But the truth is, processed and packaged food are for the countries where a fresh supply of things aren't possible or are scarcely available. Fortunately, for the currently I reside in, India, most of the food and goods are always available farm fresh. So why rely on processed ones?
The book has several chapters of different food items, telling the readers about their merits and bursting many of the myths we have. The best thing which I must say I loved about this book is that it introduces the readers to various sorts of healthy dishes along with their Recipes that the author found while wandering through the nation. It also contains a 3 Monthly Health Regime/Routine to stay on to the healthy track of lifestyle you would want to achieve after reading this book.
I'm thankful to the author that she introduced me to such a great Selfhelp book which would be opened by me again and again randomly just to remind me of how culturally vast our Heritage knowledge about food is.
Conclusion - Finally a Self-Help book which will keep you fit, based on our own age-old knowledge.
After the success of 'Don't Diet', the author has come with her second book. A lot of these habits reminded me of my grandma, how she remained fit instead of focussing just on being lean. Simple language, easy to follow diet habits - the book is an always available health guide for people of all ages. Much better than a lot of frivolous diet books of today. Must read!
The health is our primary concern and healthy eating habits are something we continuously look for to keep ourselves in proper shape. Our grandmas have been teaching us to eat healthy since our childhood. There are notions they say are right and effective and believed them to be mere myths. But in this book, the author attempts to busts some myths, provide scientific reasons for others, and suggest us, several amazing dietary habits.
The crisp and witty writing style makes for an interesting reading experience. Nowhere, you would feel that is very plain and monotonous teaching. Rather, the way the author uses her pen connects the reader to her work. One gets to know about the importance of fats, the vitality of fruits and nutritional value of the lentils. Practicing moderation is the best one must do to live a fulfilling life. Don’t discard sweets and fats. Just take them in balanced quantity. Another interesting point put by her is the necessity of incorporating good bacteria – probiotics – in our diet. And so, you would discover the reason behind putting green chilies and raw onion in your plate.
The author then goes forward talking about leading a healthy lifestyle by giving due importance to exercise, food, and proper seating arrangement for having your meal. Here, holistic living is the key! The very delightful thing one comes to know is the reason behind eating like our forefathers and eating according to the seasons. It all ends with the 30 amazing quick recipes.
I enjoyed reading the book because it was very smooth and light. One can get a lot of information in this small bunch of happiness which wouldn’t ask for a lot of your time. One interested in improving one’s health must definitely read it to get some expert and practical advice of a nutritionist on how to have a delicious and healthy meal.

And stayed fit, without the dozen beauty products and gyms and fake advices from all over the internet, which makes it really difficult to distinguish what's true, and what's just promotional bullshit. You really don't need a lot to finish this book which will surely do a hell lotta good to you. In body, mind and kind. 📕
How many of you spend time on yourselves? Doing something for your body, soul? The generation that I belong to obsesses over pasta and pizza. Healthy diet is something that we have forgotten and all the junk that goes inside us not only makes us obese but also prone to diseases. Dadima ke nuske (Grandmother's Hacks) comes in easy at that point of time. But what if you're away from home and can't talk to your grandma?
Well , Kavita Devgan just got that sorted for you.
Ultimate Grandmother's Hacks by Kavita Devgan brings to you 50 traditional habits for a fit and healthy you in just 218 pages. The book opens up with a guide how you should read this book which you must read for a fine reading experience.
The book is divided into two sections - the first one has 50 habits that one must follow for a healthy lifestyle. The second part has a 3-months traditional habits calendar that you can follow. The lucid writing and in depth analysis of the food items that you must have is something I really liked.
What makes this different from other self help cook books is how the food item affects your health, in both a good & bad way. Other food books that I have referred to in the past focus more on what you should NOT eat rather than what you should eat.
Towards the end of the book, you will find an easy detox plan and 30 mini recipes for a healthy living! I am totally trying some of them and you must too!
Get your hands on this one if you want to lead a healthy lifestyle!
Its ultimate in food. Must for every Indian, more so those who pooh poohs traditional wisdom of grandparents Read more at http://lifeandmore.in/culture/books/t...
When we were young, we often heard the jargon ‘दादाजी के नुस्खे.. हैं बड़े काम के…!’ As soon as the foreign bacteria would invade the vulnerable body, the kitchen would transform into a small clinic and the ingredients would become the medicines. Our grandmother would take up the role of the doctor and she would prescribe the medication that would do the wonders in the blink of an eye.
With the inclination towards a sedentary lifestyle, old habits have gone forgotten. And in such a situation, ‘Ultimate Grandmother Hacks’ proves out to be a lifesaver. Written after a lot of research and experience, this book treasures a lot of home remedies that can be any port in the storm. I took a long time to complete this book. No not because it's boring or anything. But because I wanted to implement the diet and lifestyle related advices in my life. I wouldn't say I am completely transformed.. But yes I have changed mine and my family's food habits to a great extent. Very simple easily doable tips and advices that are accompanied with a convincing reason too..as to why so. I am glad I got this book.
Remember, How food at our grandmother's house was not only tasty but healthy too? ••••• Ultimate Grandmother Hacks by Kavita Devgan is the book where the author is talking about 50 old times habits which are completely forgotten in todays fast paced world. The book contains timeless घर के नुस्खे which our grandparents had followed and are absolutely necessary for us too to incorporate them in our lifestyle all over again for a fitter and healthy version of ourselves.
The book is overall enjoyable. You'll get to know a lot about traditional Indian food and lifestyle and their benefits. Somehow the book seemed a little contradicting to me in the end. For example in the beginning it encourages good and natural fat and in the end asks us to eat fat free. Overall good takeaway from it.
Decent coverage of basic traditional food knowledge. However it took me three attempts to read through. Not as engaging as Rujuta Diwakar’s books on similar topics. The recipes at the end were a good addition.
Simple and clear nutrition suggestion which are very easy to follow and incorporate to ones lifestyle .Explains the modern science and benefits behind our golden traditional habits.
A typical Indian kitchen is not just the place where you cook your daily meal but a repository of all the spices and other condiments, that hold several medicinal properties. From turmeric to fennel to fenugreek, the magic of an Indian spice is world known and thus must be treasured.
This beautiful little book in ‘Ultimate Grandmother Hacks’ attempts to arrest the reader of the benefits of healthy and judicious eating. The writer has incorporated enough methods you can use to tweak your lifestyle for a healthier being. The writing is simple and no heavy jargons are used for a cleaner and a clearer understanding.
You have to read this ‘ready recknor’ and listen to the humble advice the writer has penned. Go traditional, go retro! 📚
Good research, great tips - but the writing could’ve been more engaging. Read through this as a textbook, got some great takeaways, but unfortunately nothing special to remember it by.
