When Buster comes to live at Roger’s house, he has much to learn about the world at large. Thank goodness Phoebe is there to teach him. She will instruct him about puppy bones, about smart bones and marked bones. And bones that mysteriously disappear. But all on his own Buster will learn something much more important. With lively and spontaneous drawings, this chapter book for beginning readers shows how a goodhearted and generous dog discovers one of the riches of life—beyond bones.
Just in case you need some encouragement to develop your bone collection skills, fellow Goodreaders. Meet Phoebe, a bone curator of sorts.
"Before Buster came to Roger's house, Bones were something for Phoebe to chew on.
After Buster came, bones were something for Phoebe to collect."
You don't have to be a really experienced reader to see through a "friend" whose advice may not be on the level. But Phoebe does have a good heart, maybe.
FIVE STARS for the intriguing plot and especially for the spontaneously lighthearted drawings, also by the author.
Bechtold, L. (2003). Buster & phobe. New York: Houghton mifflin company.
The main characters in the story are named Buster and Phoebe. They are dogs. Buster is younger than Phoebe. Phoebe tricks Buster into giving her all his bones by telling him he has to teach them to stay and then when he is not looking she steals them. Eventually Buster develops a special marking on his bones and realizes that Phoebe has all of his. They finally sort them out and Phoebe is mad because she does not have more than Buster. Then Phoebe sets her sights on the big bone that belongs to the neighbor dog. She makes Buster become friends with him so that she can attempt to steal it. Buster tries to teach the neighbor dog that he needs to teach his bone to stay. Then when they both go away Phoebe steals it, but they catch her and get the bone back. At the end of the story Phoebe tries to fight with Buster and say that she has more bones. Buster then realizes that his new friend is more important and that it does not matter who has more bones. I liked this story, I rate it a 5/5. It was entertaining but a little boring to me. I did like that it has a message to show children that they should share and that it is not okay to take other peoples things.
Hilarious! Sweet, slightly dopey Buster and smart, conniving Phoebe are a winning combination. Kids will love being in on the jokes, and adult dog owners will love these pooches' all too familiar antics.
Very cute, we thought. Phoebe is a very devious older and wiser dog with extremely cute ears. Buster is not the sharpest tool. Corrie, I know a puppy at your house who might like this book.
A fun early reader book about getting a new puppy/sibling and learning to share. All through silly doggers and their bones. Midlevel with great illustrations.
