3.7 stars. I enjoyed this second book int the series and I'm happy I've found a series of books by Christoffer Carlsson that I liked, as I hoped I would. Not my favorite but good to spend some time with and intriguing enough
Good political/social commentary type thriller just wish I had read the first book in the series.
My View: Clues like these…mean nothing in isolation, without the story that ties them all together. They are like road signs without symbols or letters. (p.39)
An interesting modern police procedural with relevant contemporary references to global social and political issues. It is also a domestic story about friendship, trust and betrayal and demonstrates just how easy it is for people to be manipulated by fear – of being exposed (for behaviours they do not wish made public or to be made accountable for) fear of rejection, of not belonging, of not living up to others expectations.
Carlsson offers many astute observations of life and society throughout the book, this one particular observation resonated with me: (of Michael and Christian p. 100) They were fifteen, and both believed that they understood everything. In fact they understood nothing.
Sociology and crime make for an interesting read, however I feel that as I missed reading the first book in this series I missed the connections between characters and didn’t have the background to understand some of the complicated relationships - I wanted to know what had happened to Leo, why he was taking medication, why he was hallucinating, showing obvious other signs of PTS (I knew it was to do with an incident relating to a shooting but little else). Whilst Carlsson provides some background information in this episode there is not enough for the new reader to be able to pick up the intricacies or nuances of relationships. I really wanted to know more about Leo and Grim, about Leo and Birck, about Leo and Sam. Regardless of my lack of history of some of the characters, this was still is an interesting look at some social political groups and situations that could easily become reality.
**The series will shortly be developed into a three season TV drama by StellNova Film.
The Falling Detective is the second in a new series of Swedish crime from Christoffer Carlsson, who has introduced us to Detective Leo Junker. Rather than the usual fare of odd Swedish detective we are given a real defective detective, trying to wean himself off drugs, an associate in secure mental health facility and a relationship that is stuttering, in total a detective who really is not fit for duty, but do not tell anyone.
Leo Junker has returned to active duty in what it commonly referred to as the snake pit, or to the public as the homicide unit. Then a former political activist, now sociologist from Stockholm University, Thomas Heber, is murdered in an ally and their only witness is a young boy who can barely see out of the window,
The only clues that are left, are those by Heber, which are cryptic at best and dumbfounding in the main, what they do indicate is that someone’s life is in danger, and they do not know who. To make matters worse all the people who might have the required information are only identified as a number so there is no clue as to where to look. All his colleagues know is that Heber has been looking at the extreme left and right wing movements in Sweden.
Leo is put on the case with colleague and former nemesis Gabriel Black, but when the case is reassigned away from them to SEPO (Swedish Security Services) do they both realise that there is more to the murder than anybody is admitting or willing to talk about. He and Black soon find themselves entangled in a clash between a racist street gang and their rivals, who are playing out an all too real war on the streets, in the public eye as well as in the shadows.
If I were to have one complaint about this thriller is that it tends to jump around especially around two of the racist gang, while giving them a back story, jumping back and forwards can get confusing, especially if you are not used to Scandi Noir.
The Falling Detective is a good thriller that even if at some point, you may be able to predict how the story ends, there is still enough of a twist to say ‘I didn’t see that coming!’ Minus my gripes this is a well read and thought out crime thriller which examines, an area of Swedish politics that has always been around but tended to be ignored like the embarrassing uncle at a party. Still it is an enjoyable thriller well worth reading and getting to know Leo Junker better.
The second volume of the Leo Junker series was also exciting from the first page to the last. A sociologist who researched political fringe groups is found murdered in a Stockholm backyard. Leo Junker discovers that the victim had received warnings of an impending assassination attempt. Shortly afterwards, the case is taken away from him for no reason and handed over to the Swedish secret service. Leo is alarmed: this can only mean that the investigation is being manipulated. This only fuels Leo's ambition: he sets everything in motion to find out why the sociologist really had to die. And how to prevent the impending terrible assassination at the last second. Together with his colleague Birck, he tries to solve the case. In addition, this case does not exactly make his return to the police service easy. And he has to prove to everyone what he tries to convince himself of every day: that he has recovered physically and mentally and is completely fit for work. (4½)
Was erschreckend wirkt.
This is an incredibly strong crime novel, I would venture to say that among contemporary crime fiction it is in the absolute top! … This is not a rush job, rather it is solid work crafted by a young man who impresses with his maturity and his analysis of the dark side of Sweden. Christoffer Carlsson has once again written a beautiful crime novel. Complex, topical and with stylistic verve … This is brilliant and promising. Borås Tidning
One of Sweden’s most interesting crime authors … Carefully crafted language that is at times very poetic, without becoming over-saturated. It isn’t too long either … Every word carries meaning, every character has fascinating psychological depth. Magnus Utvik, Gomorron Sverige, Swedish television

An exceedingly relevant, insider deep-dive into a terrifying world where violence and blind obedience is the rule. But also a convincing tale of friendship and betrayal, relationships and double loyalties. A dark, thrilling story that feels close to reality. Aftonbladet
I seldom appreciate authors who write genre novels, but Carlsson does it so well that one is tempted to call it a reinvention of the genre. Hallandsposten (SE)
The Falling Detective develops into an ambitious political thriller with an unnervingly topical — and fully plausible — plot … A suspense novel miles above average. So, what is The Swedish Crime Writers’ Academy to do this year? Jönköping-Posten
… Life-or-death stakes but also literary acrobatics that lure the reader in … Christoffer Carlsson is truly a master of mixing play with gravity and crime genre nostalgia with contemporary realism … Christoffer Carlsson loves the crime genre and that love makes me love reading his books. Gunilla Wedding, Norra Skåne
Christoffer Carlsson has done it again … a truly excellent crime novel. Smålandsposten
The best part with The Falling Detective is the psychosocial point of view originating from everyday life in the neglected neighbourhoods, showing how they've been forgotten by society. This creates a breeding ground for extremism. Helsingin Sanomat
The Falling Detective is an extremely well-written crime novel, but it’s also more than that. It’s a novel that ought to appeal to a much broader audience than the typical crime reader. It’s well-written, thrilling and encapsulated in a dense atmosphere. Den Döda Zonen
This story hits at the very core of our contemporary society. What I like about this author is that he doesn’t just focus on the suspense of the plot, but is a master at depicting how class and upbringing shapes us into who we are. Aftonbladet

Bude to mít spád. Jo kéž by.
Hard to follow because of the way it kept switching POV / going back in time without any real warning. Interesting plot line but I didn’t really care about any of the characters so I wasn’t very invested. Good story and the way things tied together was very satisfying.
