They’ve survived battles, the Great Fire of London and World War II. Can they survive ancient Rome?
When Lizzie goes missing on a day trip to a Roman villa, only Maisie and Danny know she’s time-shifted. Going after her puts them in more danger than they thought possible, particularly when they end up in ancient Rome instead of Roman Britain.
Nothing is what it seems. They have friends throughout time, and enemies where they least expect. Maisie leads the adventure, shifting through time and finding help from familiar faces from the past.
With hunters from the future closing in, the shocking discovery of exactly who is after them changes everything.
Kate Frost has wanted to be an author ever since she wrote her first novel during the long months she spent off school following open heart surgery when she was seven. The novel was called London's Burning and was a time travel story set during the Great Fire of London.
Over the years Kate has worked in a cinema, a bookshop, a factory and as a part time lecturer at Bath Spa University teaching lifewriting to Creative Writing undergraduates. She's also worked as ground staff at Edgebaston Tennis Tournament, as a Virgin Vie consultant and as a Supporting Artist in the films Vanity Fair, King Arthur and The Duchess.
Kate has a MA in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University and has had articles and short stories published in The London Magazine, New Welsh Review and QWF. She now works as a freelance writer/author and lives in the UK with her husband, her son and their dog.
Having read the first book, I was delighted to get an ARC of book 2 in the Time Shifters series. I was intrigued to see where the story was going, and what would happen next to Danny, Maisie and Lizzie.
I wasn't disappointed. I was hooked within the first few pages, as Danny and Maisie discover that Lizzie has gone missing and decide to travel in time to find her. Their first adventure begins in ancient Rome, and the author describes the setting so well that you can believe they're actually there!
A crazy adventure of travelling backwards and forwards in time ensues, taking Danny and Maisie from ancient Rome to the future, while meeting some old friends along the way. There's a bit of a twist towards the end, when they find out that one of them is not what they seem!
Without giving away any spoilers, this a fun, exciting adventure story for older children and young adults that will take them on a journey through history and ignite their imagination! I highly recommend both books.
Time Shifters: A Long Way from Home is the sequel to Time Shifters: Into the Past. In book one Maisie, Liz and Danny accidentally time shifted to mediaeval England and began their adventures. Book two starts with them safely back home but then Liz, while visiting the site of a Roman Villa, accidentally shifts herself back to Roman Britain. Maisie guesses what's happened when she sees the news about a vanished girl so she and Danny set off in pursuit. By concentrating hard on the details of a past time they can move there physically. It doesn't go according to plan.
As a grumpy old man, I so found narrator Maisie's vocabulary totally annoying and I thought she too often summarised what had just happened. Hence only three stars. However, it's clearly written and gallops along at a good pace. Young fans of Doctor Who should love it.
