Mairi learns there is a darker side to the Fae Folk and humans alike. When Mairi enters the Faerie Realm along with her cousin Anne, her brother Jamie, and a mysterious spirit cat named KA, in search of the humans kept captive by the faeries, they encounter changelings, giants, and bloodthirsty fae while battling accusations of "witch" and are shadowed by the druid Ewan MacDonald seeking revenge. Autumn is a darker time for everyone, and Mairi has only one agenda; to prove her dad never died.
This is the second book in the Celtic Magic series. The first book, The Trinity Knot, relays the story of how Mairi came to be magical after the death of her dad. Weaving Celtic Fairy Tales with the Scotland of centuries ago and the California of modern day, these two books provide an insight into the Celtic ancestry many Americans share with the United Kingdom.
I want to thank H.R. Conklin, author and Goodreads First Reads Giveaway for the eBook Kindle copy of The Witch's Knot that I won in the Giveaway.
Mairi is an untrained witch, envious of her cousin Anne and along with her brother, Jamie and a spirit cat named KA; they enter the Faerie Realm they learn of the dark and good side of the Fae folk and humans alike. Mairi matures into her powers, and the group has a grand adventure in The Witch's Knot, a delightful fantasy.
Book 2, The Witch's Knot takes place in during the Autumn Equinox. We meet Tobias/Ka, the black cat who goes between the Faerie Realm in 1600 Scotland and present day California where he is a boy with a severe disability. Anne time travels from Scotland to help Gran heal from her years being in a cat's body, and Mairi, Jaime, and Danny continue their adventures with time travel. They save their baby cousin from the Dark Faeries, and Mairi looks for her dead father, hoping he is alive as a changling in the Faerie world. Mairi's magic gets stronger and she and Anne are able to save Anne's dad and Mairi's uncle from death by the dark faeries. When all are returned to safety, Anne is able to partially heal Tobias' disabilities. On a deeper level, Conklin teaches us about the cycles of life, how to release and honor those we love, and how to really listen to the messages of Mother Earth and her animals. She shows us that everyone has good in them that can be nurtured and appreciated.
Having not read the first book in the series before reading this one, I was a little confused by some of the relationships in this book, but I think I got the gist of it. Most of this book felt like they were going in circles and not really accomplishing anything. They definitely did not seem to think anything through before acting. The rules of the magic in this universe seem pretty all over the place too. I don't think I'll pick up any of the other books in this series. I don't care enough about the characters to continue.
This ebook was provided to me through a Goodreads giveaway. Thank you to H.R. Conklin, the publisher, and Goodreads for giving me the opportunity to read it. This is my honest review. No compensation was given.
4 1/2 stars.....I won a free kindle book through Good reads.... :) ...I enjoyed this book as much as the first. The going back and forth between time, the witches, faeries. Good story line. For some reason I thought this was a 2 book series and that's why 4 1/2 stars...It will be a year until the next book comes out. :/ Years ago I stopped reading series that sounded good until they all came out.... Do read the series, as grumpy as I am that I have to wait a year for the 3rd book it was worth it. :)
I believe that this will appeal to readers who enjoy young adult fantasy. Although I read this without reading the first book in the series, and it does work reading it had way, I recommend reading this series in order because the books happen in chronological order and build upon each other. The story is complex, with several storylines, and I found myself having to pay close attention.
I particularly enjoyed the time traveling that took place throughout the story. As the series title, Celtic Magic, suggests, this book is full of Celtic mythology, including faeries, druids, and pixies.
Intrepid Mairi gets deeper into the quest and wonder surrounding her family and life and we have so much fun going with her! We care what happens to her as her life gets even more intertwined with the magic coming to surface in her being and the choices she has to make to heal her fractured family. Highly recommended for the young adults in your life, especially any who love the Harry Potter series.
Well developed and complex plot. Many intricate twists throughout the entire book, in all times and realms. I liked the locations, and they were nicely described. I enjoyed reading this book. It's definitely not a quick or light read, so don't start if you are rushed or going to bed- you'll get into it, and not realize how much time has passed. I won a copy to read and give my unbiased review.
