Julia Justiss

Julia Justiss grew up breathing the scent of sea air near the colonial town of Annapolis, Maryland, a fact responsible for two of her life-long passions: sailors and history! By age twelve she was a junior tour guide for Historic Annapolis, conducting visitors on walking tours through the city that was a hotbed of revolutionary fervor. (Annapolis hosted its own tea party, dispensing with the cargo aboard the "Peggy Stewart," and was briefly capital of the United States.) She also took tourists through Annapolis's other big attraction, the United States Naval Academy. After so many years of observing future naval officers at P-rade and chapel, it seemed almost inevitable that she eventually married one.

But long before embarking on romantic adventures of her own, she read about them, transporting herself to such favorite venues as ancient Egypt, World War II submarine patrols, the Old South and, of course, Regency England. Soon she was keeping notebooks for jotting down story ideas. From plotting adventures for her first favorite heroine Nancy Drew she went on to write poetry in high school and college, then worked as a business journalist doing speeches, sales promotion material and newsletter articles. After her marriage to a naval lieutenant took her overseas, she wrote the newsletter for the American Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia and traveled extensively throughout Europe. Before leaving Tunis, she fulfilled her first goal: completing a Regency novel.

Children intervened, and not until her husband left the Navy to return to his Texas homeland did she sit down to pen a second novel. The reply to her fan mail letter to a Regency author led her to Romance Writers of America. From the very first meeting, she knew she'd found a home among fellow writers--doubtless the largest group of people outside a mental institution who talk back to the voices in their heads.

Her second goal was achieved the day before her birthday in May, 1998 when Margaret Marbury of Harlequin Historicals offered to buy that second book, the Golden-Heart-Award winning novel that became THE WEDDING GAMBLE. Since then, she has gone on to write fourteen novels, three novellas and an on-line serial, along the way winning or finalling for historical awards from The Golden Quill, the National Reader’s Choice, Romantic Times, and All About Romance’s Favorite Book of the Year.

Julia now inhabits an English Georgian-style house she and her husband built in the East Texas countryside where, if she closes her eyes and ignores the summer thermometer, she can almost imagine she inhabits the landscape of "Pride and Prejudice." In between travelling to visit her three children (a naval officer son stationed in Washington, DC, a textiles and design major daughter who cheers for University of Texas at Austin, and a mechanical engineering major son also at UT Austin) keeping up with her science teacher husband and juggling a part-time day job as a high school French teacher, she pursues her first and dearest love--crafting stories.

To relax, she enjoys watching movies, reading (historical fiction, mystery, suspense) and puttering about in the garden trying to kill off more weeds than flowers.

The Earl’s Inconvenient Wife by Julia Justiss is a 2019 Harlequin Historical publication.

A lovely and tender' friends to lovers' story-

Temperance is happy her twin sister has found her true love and a husband. But that is not the life for her. No, Temperance wants desperately to defy conventions and become a world traveler. Her father, however, will not release her dowry until she has gone through with at least one ‘season’.

Due to her mother's scandalous reputation, easing Temper into society might prove tricky. Coming to her rescue is an old friend of her brother’s, Gifford Newell.

Gifford enlists the help of the influential Lady Sayleford to sponsor Temperance. She agrees, but with one stipulation-

Gifford must attend all the various dances and functions with Temperance to protect her from any backlash.

Neither Gifford or Temperance is happy about this arrangement. Why? Because as of late, there has been a little noticeable, if unspoken, shift in the way they feel about one another. Being forced together at social events would only increase the palpable tension between them.

Never in their wildest dreams would they have imagined those uneasy social engagements would lead to a forced marriage!

While I loved the first book in this series, I’m afraid Temperance and Gifford may have given Prudence and Johnnie a run for their money in this second installment of the ‘Scandalous Sisters’ series.

This is a charming story, which features two very likeable main characters, both of whom are under pressure to marry. Yet, they fight off the prospect of marriage as hard as they fight their attraction to one another. It was so much fun watching them fall in love, but there are a few darker tones in the story, as well.

A diabolical and spiteful plot is afoot which could force Temperance and Gifford to give up everything they hold dear. No only that, Temperance is harboring a painful secret, another reason why she would rather travel abroad and avoid marriage at all costs.

Justiss did a fantastic job with the construction of this novel. The character development and emotional depth are outstanding, as are the cleverly written plot twists. The pacing is very balanced, keeping the reader entertained from start to finish.

As always, the author stays true to the time period, and as always, I send my deepest thanks to JJ for sticking to a format so many have abandoned. Finding a pure Regency is not always easy.

However, readers should be aware this story is more than a ‘friends to lovers’ romance. However, the serious topics do not damper the lighter tones expected in a Regency romance. The idea that women were not as free to travel and see the world is also a stark reminder of the restrictions women were forced to adhere to, with little or no wiggle room.

Although Temperance’s life may have suddenly veered away from the path, she had so determinedly marched towards, with her delightfully unexpected happily ever after, she and her unburdened soul can now find peace and contentment no matter where she lands.

The Earl’s Inconvenient Wife is the second in Julia Justiss’ duology about the Lattimar sisters, twins Prudence and Temperance, who have been dubbed the Sisters of Scandal not because they’ve ever done anything scandalous, but because of their mother’s notoriety.  It’s the companion novel to A Most Unsuitable Match, which saw Prudence finding her happy ever after; now it’s the turn of Temperance (and I have to say here that I really didn't care for her shortened name of Temper), whose ambitions run towards travel and adventure – and most definitely not towards marriage.

Temper’s determination not to marry is one she’s long held, so in some ways, her mother’s tarnished reputation may work in her favour, as it means Temper will not be received in the best society or attract any respectable suitors, which is fine by her.  What she truly wants to do is to persuade her father to release the funds set aside for her dowry so that she can travel the world – and perhaps collect precious artefacts on his behalf.  Lord Vraux is a distant, unemotional man who barely acknowledges his daughters’ existence; and secretly Temper is not especially surprised that his disinterest drove their mother into the arms of other men. His passion is his collections and it’s that that Temper hopes to use in order to obtain her funds.   Sadly, however, he will hear nothing of it, and instead insists that Temper makes her début and has a season.  He wants her to find a husband and doesn’t seem to take into account the difficulty presented by her lack of reputation; so Temper decides she’ll do what he asks and have her season, fully intending to make sure she ends the season unwed.

The most recent scandal involving her mother – which was actually none of her making – is fresh in the minds of society, but Temper is determined to go her own way and make her début in London rather than in Bath, as Prudence is going to do.  When her brothers express their concern, their friend, Gifford Newell – whom Temper has known forever – says he will speak to his godmother Lady Sayleford, one of the doyennes of society – to see if she will sponsor Temper.  Lady Sayleford is a force to be reckoned with, and although her countenance will not whitewash Temper’s name in society, it will at least ease her way a little.  Temper agrees… but hadn’t accounted for the fact that Lady Sayleford would pull Giff into the mix by insisting that he be present at events Temper attends in order to scare off the disreputable men who will do doubt flock to her a beautiful, well-dowered young woman whose mother’s reputation for being ‘fast’ means she’s viewed as loose-moraled and easy prey.

Giff is an upcoming, hard-working MP who is part of the group known as Hadley’s Hellions (who featured in the author’s recent series of books of the same name).  He’s the second son of an earl whose parents have never had time for him, instead lavishing all their affection and attention on the heir, his brother Robert, so he’s made his own way in life and is content with his lot.  For the most part.  He’s known Temper for years, but recently has begun to see her as different eyes; no longer is she the annoying younger sister of his closest friends, but a lovely, desirable young woman he has no business thinking about in that way.  The trouble is that he senses that his attraction to her isn’t one-sided, and that she is fighting her feelings for him every bit as hard as he is fighting his for her. But to think of anything other than friendship is impossible. Not only does Temper never intend to marry, when Giff takes a wife, he needs to marry someone who will make a good political wife and hostess, someone who can help and support him in his work – not someone like Temper, who has always been headstrong and impulsive.

The friends-to-lovers trope is a particular favourite, so I had expectations going in that this would be a story I’d enjoy – and it was.  Temperance and Giff are likeable, intelligent and sincere characters and I appreciated that they both took each other’s aims and ambitions seriously – especially Giff, who never dismissed Temper’s desire to travel and went out of his way to provide opportunities for her to further her interest and discuss far-flung places and cultures with those who had experienced them.

As always with this author, her story and characters remain very much in and of their period.  Temper may have ambitions different from those of many well-bred young women, and may be more forthright than most, but she’s never TSTL or prancing around asking us to look at how unconventional she is.  Given Giff’s position as an MP, there are interesting snippets about the politicial situation of the time, and I particularly liked the subtle way Ms. Justiss incorporates some pertinent observations about marriage at the time, mostly through her depiction of the sad union between Lord and Lady Vraux (and her portrayal of Temper’s mother, a woman who has suffered for behaviour that wouldn’t have rated the merest batt of an eyelash had she been a man) – and of the way society has received the news that upcoming marriage of a widowed viscount – father of Ben Tawny from Convenient Proposal to the Lady – to the woman he has always loved but could not marry before (Ben’s mother).

It’s not a spoiler to say that Temper and Giff end up married – thanks to the machinations of a spoiled society miss who manoeuvres them into a compromising situation – or that Giff’s personal situation undergoes a material change (it’s obvious from the book’s title).  Both these events mean that the plans he and Temper had held to so hard are going to have to undergo drastic changes, but fortunately, the strong friendship that has always existed between them enables them to face them together and grow closer as they do so.  I really liked the way they worked as a couple; they communicate well and even though Temper is quite young (she’s only twenty, I think) she and Giff handle their altered prospects with maturity, with Temper displaying a strength of character and competence that Giff had perhaps not previously suspected she possessed.  Ms. Justiss writes their relationship and romance really well, establishing a deep friendship between them but also adding those touches of longing and attraction which grow as the story progresses.

The Earl’s Inconvenient Wife is a well-developed, well-written romance with likeable characters and a strong sense of time and place that I’m sure all fans of historical romance will enjoy.

As usual with this author, this book was a complete delight to read. I’ve been wanting for the longest to read a real friends to lovers story, where it’s not the usual “best friend’s sister, taboo, cannot-cross-that-line” kind of story, but an actual two friends that happen to fall in love and Giff and Temper were exactly what I was looking for.
Temperance is a spirited young woman stained by her mother’s past who has also given up hope of finding a husband that will allowed her to fulfill her dreams of exploring exotic places. Giff unintentionally gets embroiled in her plans to become a rich spinster, and later her honor-bound husband, and before they know it they are actually falling in love with each other. Their story is full of romance and palpable friendship. They are open, caring, and genuine with each other. It was such a joy to read how he spent time erasing dark memories of her past, ever so patiently, ever so tender.

I also loved how the author managed to depict 3 different marriages with such historical accuracy (according to me) where neither passion or love might have been the reason for the union, yet with real dedication and respect for each other made all the difference. This is definitely a book for you if you’re looking for a fun story with rich characters, and plenty of heart.

** I received this book at no cost to me and I volunteered to read it; this is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher **

Temperance Lattimar is too scandalous for a Season, then her brother’s best friend Gifford Newell suggests his godmother as a sponsor. So Temper finds herself sponsored by Lady Sayleford & Griff is appointed to “protect” her at society events. With her past, she knows she’s not an ideal wife but then a marriage of convenience to an earl becomes the only option!
Another page turner captivating read, Temper doesn’t wish to marry but wants to travel but realises she can’t do that before failing to find a husband. Griff is a hard working Member of Parliament who has been neglected by his family as he’s only the second son. Griff & Temper have known each other for years but he realises that she’s no longer a little girl. The story flowed well & held my interest al the way through. I loved both Griff & Temper from the start thought them perfect for each other but they both fought it. The secondary characters were well portrayed & I’d love to see at least two of them to have their own stories. This story is the second in the series & it could be read on its own but I’d recommend reading it after the first as the two stories do overlap
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

The Earl’s Inconvenient Wife by Julia Justiss started off slow and I almost gave up, but I am glad I didn’t. Once the story started coming together, it completely captured my attention. The characters were great and the emotion flowed from the pages. A wonderful story and well worth the read!

Temperance “Temper” Lattimar has never even had a season, yet is already considered scandalous due to being part of the “Vraux Miscellany.” Her mother, a noted beauty, had affairs which resulted in children being sired by different men, though her husband accepted them as his own. Now that Temper is twenty two years old, her father is insistent that she finally make her debut. Temper has no plans to ever marry. An incident from her past, as well as seeing her parents’ dysfunctional relationship has convinced her that she’ll be happy living her life unwed. She hopes that by agreeing to one season, her father will be appeased, then turn over her dowry directly to her so that she can live out her dream of travelling the world.

Gifford “Giff” Newell is the second son of the Earl of Fensworth, and is a dedicated politician. He is too busy enjoying the favors of many women to even think about marriage, though he supposes he’ll have to settle down one day, with a respectable lady who can help further his career. Giff has known Temper forever, as she’s the younger sister of his best friend, Greg. Truth be told, since Temper has grown up and become an outstandingly beautiful woman, he’s been fighting his attraction for her while trying to maintain the easy friendship they’ve always shared. Knowing the difficulties she’ll face in society, Giff convinces his godmother, the very respectable Lady Sayleford, to sponsor her, hoping that will open some doors for Temper. Lady Sayleford agrees, but part of the deal is that Giff must be on hand also, to ensure that Temper is kept safe from unwanted advances by unscrupulous men thinking she’s exactly the same as her scandalous mother.

Giff knows the constant proximity to Temper is going to be difficult, and that he’s going to have to keep control of his desire for her. He’s also experienced enough to know that Temper feels greatly attracted to him, as well. The season begins, and Temper has some successes, as well as some setbacks. When a spiteful young lady arranges for Temper and Giff to be found in a compromising situation, Giff has no honorable alternative, and offers marriage. Temper will only accept a white (no sex) marriage, and since Giff has no need of heirs, he agrees. Giff will also allow Temper to travel as she’s dreamed, so they enter into a no strings marriage of convenience.

One thing I particularly loved about this couple was their genuine friendship and liking for each other. They talked openly and frankly, and were very protective and caring of the other. Giff didn’t hide the fact that he desired Temper, but he made it clear to her that he would abide by their agreement unless she chose to change it. When a tragedy happens on their wedding day, their circumstances change so drastically, that they know all their careful plans are about to become worthless. Both Temper and Giff rise to the new challenges, and it brings them even closer to each other, as well as showing their strength of character. Temper finally feels ready to face down her demons and take a chance on having a real marriage. While Giff doesn’t know all the facts about Temper’s fear of intimacy, his patience and care of her are swoonworthy.

THE EARL’S INCONVENIENT WIFE is a warm and romantic story with a hero and heroine I truly liked and admired. I also enjoyed learning more about the sad marriage between Temper’s parents – I could see now that her father was never intentionally cruel, and I better understood her mother’s actions. There was also another couple of characters introduced that I would love to see find a happy ever after together. If you enjoy a genuine romance, and the tropes of friends-to-lovers and marriage of convenience (two of my favorites in one book,) with unconventional, but strong characters, I believe you’ll savor this book, as I did.

Temperance is a twin. She and her sister Prudence have basically been shunned by the important people in the ton. Their mother has a reputation for being a woman of no integrity. And because their mother is a wanton, it is evident both young women will be the same. Everyone who is everyone knows that.

Prudence has gone to Bath with an aunt to get away from the most recent gossip. That leaves Temperance in London, with a plan.

Temperance has a desire to explore and travel the world. She has no plans to marry. She is hoping her father will give her her very large dowry and she will be able to have all the adventures she desires.

Her father says she must have at least one season in order to find a husband.

Temperance must concede defeat.

Lady Sayleford, a very important leader in the ton, has agreed to be her sponsor. A chaperon has been found and her brother's best friend, Gifford Newell, will provide her with an escort. He will even give up some of his important duties as an MP in order to keep her safe.

Temperance is a strong and powerful young woman. She considers herself a wild child, but in reality, she keeps herself in check even when people verbally assault her. Everything she does, she tries to do it in such a way that will not embarrass her sponsor, her chaperon nor her father.

At times in spite of her best intentions, when she is insulted, she responds in a way that shows her strength of character as well as her quick wit. She can use a killer phrase with the best of them.

I admire Temperance for her strength. She is withholding a secret which has colored her outlook on life for several years. She is hiding the secret because she does not want to injure her family's feelings. She is kindhearted, but strong enough to stand up for herself as well as her mother. Temperance has faced life with honesty in her words and actions as well as facing her future with that same honesty.

Giff has grown up with the twins. He has admired Temperance's strength and her sense of adventure. Now when he looks at her, he is seeing a beautiful woman. He realizes of course that in order for him to have a successful political career, she would never be an appropriate wife. She is outspoken, quick witted and able to see to the heart of difficult matters. All of those qualities are wonderful, but they would not make a diplomatic wife for an MP.

Giff is a kind man who has lived his life being less important than his older brother. He has no expectations of finding true love in a happy marriage. He is a kind and loyal man who believes that it is his responsibility to care for the people in his life. His work as an MP is important to him because it can change the future of the country.

Now, he is beginning to develop feelings for Temperance, no matter how inappropriate she may be for his life. He is unable to overlook her beauty and charm as well as her intelligence.

I enjoyed this book. Although this is second in a series, it works well as a stand alone read. The reader gets to meet Prudence and other family members as illustrations of events and the foundation of the plot.

Ms Justiss has created another lovely story. Her characters are well defined. Her history is absolutely correct. Her plot moves forward at a steady pace and holds the reader's interest.

I received this book from the author. I am voluntarily writing this review and all opinions are completely my own.

Temperance Lattimar is helping her twin sister Prudence for the latter's departure for Bath, where Pru hopes to find a husband. Temper refused to follow; a husband doesn't figure in her future. Temper intends to remain a spinster and, with the family's scandalous reputation, it's all but a certainty. However, her father make it crystal-clear that she is to have that Season in London. Gifford Newell, a long-time friend of her brother Gregory, comes up with a suitable idea: Giff's godmother, the redoubtable Lady Sayleford with the spotless reputation, might be able to ease Temper's introduction into Society. But the wise old lady insists Gifford be available to offer Temper his protection when the ton's vultures attack. This detail doesn't suit either Giff and Temper much, as they have recently begun to see each other differently than mere friends.

I had not even turned the last page of A Most Unsuitable Match, the previous book, that I needed to read Temper's story. Temper is a remarkable heroine; she's extremely outspoken, doesn't want to be at the mercy of any man, and she has a sound plan to live a full life as a spinster. Giff respects and admires her, but marriage is not in his immediate future and, if it were, it would be with a woman of impeccable background, and able to smoothly blend in a politician's world.

Julia Justiss' sublime prose reigns supreme once again, and her outstanding dialogues are works of art where all the passion the hurt, the determination of Temper shine through. I was thrilled to finally learn everything about the sorry state of affairs with regards to the Sisters of Scandal's parents. Temper a brilliant character, one of the most compelling I have ever read. She is so brave in the face of adversity, she is immeasurably strong, and I felt that Giff paled by comparison; up until the end of the book, I felt rather indifferent towards him. I also started wondering if the publishers require that the author repeatedly state the main trope in the narrative; I got tired of reading about Temper being Giff's "best friend's little sister", and I wonder if it was the reason why I didn't feel the sparks between the protagonists. It reached a point where I began asking myself if Giff would have behaved as honourably towards Temper had she been any other young woman. It's also a strange thing to say for a romance, but in a way I wished that Temper could have fulfilled her initial dream, even though things turned out for the best eventually. There are quite a few wonderful characters, and I hope that some of them will feature in Ms. Justiss' upcoming books, particularly Lord Theo and Emma, both of whom I adored. Although THE EARL'S INCONVENIENT WIFE was not quite what I had anticipated, Temper was even more awe-inspiring than I hoped, and her story exceeded my expectations.

Source : ARC from the author
Date read : February 17, 2019
Rating : 4.5/5
Reread factor : 4/5

When I got a chance to get my hands on it, I literally jumped. A new regency romance with a friends-to-lovers theme and I don't want to read it? No way! Regency is one of my favourite time periods. I love the elegance and the high society of those times though there are parts which make me sad and mad.

The author has done justice to the setting and period aspects of the story. I really enjoyed reading about the fun parts - the parties and the rumour mill and the set downs etc., as much as the serious parts - women being treated as objects and not having power in their own lives. Yes, it was a tough time and the glitz kept me entertained to breeze through the pages.

And add to that the story is easy to read with good language and easy to imagine scenes, it's a no brainer wonderful read. The theme of love blossoming between long time friends is always close to my heart and this one is no exception. I literally felt the sparks between Temper and Gifford. I don't really know how her family missed it. That's the reason I loved Lady Sayleford. What an astute lady! That's how I imagine a regency heroine to be! The romance was fast and I really felt like smacking those two to getting to the resolution part so late! They kept me on tenterhooks with their love realisation.

But, the anticipation is what kept me going till the end. And what an end! A very nicely packed finale with a very happy couple. This doesn't mean that there weren'tany wicked plotting involved by the so called ladies. There is and it was what brought about the protagonists' happy life! Oh yes, a clear case of All's well that ends well!

Only thing which wasn't perfect was the plot twister regarding Temper the author had written into the book. It was hinted at so heavily and so many times that it wasn't a surprise at all when it was revealed. That could have been done better. Though this is the second book, I didn't feel that I had to read the first one to enjoy it. It really read well as a standalone and I loved the feel of the cover. It perfectly sums up the story.

All in all, a clearly charming read with good characters and a medium paced plot with enough fun to have made me read it in one go!

Thanks to the author for an ARC which doesn't impact my review in any way.

My one line review : A charming friends-to-lovers Regency romance

The Earl’s Inconvenient Wife is book two in the Sisters of Scandal’s series. Although this book can truly be read as a stand alone, I recommend starting with the Hadley’s Hellions series first and then moving on to this series.
I really enjoyed this book. Justiss knows her history and infuses the reality of life in 1833 Britain seamlessly with her characters. At the time, Lady Hester Lucy Stanhope left her constrained and scandal ridden life in England behind for travel and adventure. One hundred years prior, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu had travelled to the Ottoman Empire and written about her escapades. Travel books were in demand. Justiss’ heroine Temperance Lattimar longs for a free and independent life far from the busy society of London in order to see the world. So she sets out to go through her first season and not make a match, hoping for her independence. But when scandal strikes and her brother’s best friend is involved can she live with her dreams changing?
“Gifford Newell. Her brother’s best friend and carousing buddy, who’d acted as another older brother, tease and friend since she was in leading strings. Although lately, something seemed to have shifted between them...some sort of wordless tension that telegraphed between them when they were together, edgy, exciting...and threatening.” I really enjoyed this book. There is an edge to her romantic relationship with Gifford that kept me turning the page. I was gifted a copy of this book.

Temperance Lattimar, called Temper by her family and close friends, has a problem or three. As the legal daughter of a Lord, she is expected to find a husband on the Marriage Mart. As the daughter of a woman who has had several lovers, she is unlikely to be invited to the various balls, dinner and entertainments that would require. She is not interested in either having a Season or getting married. However, her father will not release her money to her control if she doesn't go through with a Season.
Gifford Newell is a good friend of Temper's brother. He is also a Member of Parliament, working on the Reform bill. His family wants him to find a rich wife so they no longer need to support him. He doesn't have time to woo a proper woman.
This is why I love regency romances. There is a woman who want to expand the role life has given her. There is a man who thinks he knows what he wants. There are twists and turns in the Dance of Manners to both surprise and delight the reader. I enjoyed this book very much. I recommend it to everyone who likes to see two people get what they deserve.

London 1833 It is reading stories like this that reinforces why I love historical romances so much! Julia Justiss excels at creating vibrant characters that seem to come off the page, while using her historical knowledge to make you feel you are there!
Temperance has decided she will stay home while her twin Prudence travels to Bath, where she hopes to find a husband. She has made up her mind to never marry, be independent and travel the world. Well the best laid plans are thwarted when her father insists she have a season.
Gifford Newell has been a friend of her brother Gregory forever and she has grown up around him. When he suggests his godmother sponsor her, it seems the ideal situation. But there is a catch. Giff must be available to offer Temper protection if needed and he reluctantly agrees.
Fate seems to step in and as these two spend time together it seems feelings begin to come alive. But when scandal strikes, can she survive it and not have it bring them both down?
Loved these two characters and you will also! I really could not put it down once I started and cannot wait to read more by this wonderful author!

I loved Giff and Temper’s story but, I would have liked to have seen that Wendemere and Miss Avery got their comeuppance in the end.

I hate reading a book where there are mean, evil and, malicious characters but, the book doesn’t give them their just rewards, such as those two being forced to marry each other and, him getting a fist to his nose.

It makes me feel as though an important part has been omitted when this happens.

I especially loved that there wasn’t complete chapters, devoted to clothes and colors of clothes.
A good book, such as this one did, gets right to it.

There was plenty of tension and strong-willed heroine exploits in this romance, but there was more too. I learned a lot about Parliament. It was refreshing to see an aristocrat actually working for the social good. Giff did like the ladies a bit too much, but his devotion to his work was a plus. Temper wanted only to be left alone to work. After her dad denies her money, she tries a plan that will leave her without a suitor after the season so that her dad must release her money and she can be left alone to travel around the world collecting artifacts. As with any good Harlequin the two found themselves wanting one thing, but then discovering that something else made them happy.

This is part of a series and I thought it was well done. It was exactly what I needed, a bit of fun fluff.

Meh.

This story had so many elements of my catnip - marriage of convenience, childhood friends-to-lovers, in love with BFF's sibling - that I should've loved it more than life itself. Unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations.

The characters were okay, for the most part. Tempestuous Temperance and steadying Giff were an interesting contrast to each other, and I could understand the attraction to qualities they themselves did not possess but which were available in droves in the other. I found Giff a little too good to be true with his patience (and the modern-day consent speeches a little too obvious when it came to intimate matters), and Temper was at turns resolute and cowardly. While she certainly had good reason to fear intimacy, I don't feel like it was adequately explored enough to actually believe that she had managed to finally move past her fears.

The plot was what upended this book for me. I hated the fact that these two never actually made the decision to marry, but were forced into it thanks to a weak and nonsensical plot twist (oh the disappointment of the teaser page scene ending as it does!). They were both so passive when it came to each other, right up until the end. I didn't feel the longstanding friendship that was supposed to be the foundation for their love, which is always disappointing in a friends-to-lovers story. And then, of course was just so OTT that it was grating and annoying. Seriously?? Was that even necessary?? And after all his inward moaning over not wanting to marry his BFF's little sister because of how said BFF would react, this was not even addressed and those characters disappear from the canvas altogether.

The novel is also left at loose ends, which is irritating. Yes, our couple has their HEA, but what happened to his reform bill? Did he face any issues moving from the Commons to the Lords? Did they return to their estate? What about his mother, what happened to her? Do Temper's parents ever reconcile and actually admit their feelings for one another?

The entire time I was reading this book, I couldn't help but think that the pairings where backwards: Johnnie and Temper had more in common with each other and seemed more suited to each other, as did Pru and Giff. That feeling was so strong, in fact, that it overwhelmed any happiness I felt for the Giff/Temper pairing and their potential future happiness.

This story and universe feel unfinished, but there were only two Sisters of Scandal so I don't see how this series can continue. With that said, I am tempted to go back and read their brother Christopher's story in Secret Lessons with the Rake, the final book of the Hadley's Hellions quartet, just to read more about this unusual family.

ETA: It seems the pairing for Ms. Justiss's next novel (which will indeed start a whole new series) will be Lord Theo and Miss Henley, which is not at all a surprise (Miss Henley practically announced that her little cove of friends who call themselves the Splendid Spinsters would eventually get their own stories and/or series) but may well prove interesting.

I got this book as an ARC. It was wonderful. The settings and protocols of the regency period are in full use in this book, which helps to bring you into the story.

From page one I was caught in this story. Lady Temperance Lattimar is saying good by to her sister, her twin sister. Prudence is heading to Bath with their aunt to attend the Season there so she can find a quiet husband away from her mother's latest scandal. But Temper has decided to ride the scandal out in London, She is determined not marry any way, so a Season and no takers, maybe a minor scandal society will blow out proportions will help, and she'll get her inheritance from her father and go exploring antiques for her father in the world.

Griffinel Newell, second son and member of Parliament who also happens to be a long time family friend of her brothers, steps in to help since no one will sponsor her. He offers to ask his godmother and aunt, Lady Sayleford, a lady no one in Society dares to cross. The Countess agrees with the stipulation that Giff acts as her protector at all functions.

At one point to get out of the Season, and to help Griff who is taking flack from his mother for taking money away from estate (and her) by living in London and being part of Parliament, to a marriage blac, or a marriage of Convenience. He turns her down at the time, thinking that she will change her mind about some young buck. And that with her hoyden ways she really wasn't the political wife he was looking for.

>One young miss is very jealous, and wants Giff for herself. When she realizes he is not in the market for a wife, and disbelieves Temper is not in the market for a husband, she connives to get them caught together in a room, locked from the outside I might add, ruining Temper.

We all know what happens from there, Griff being an Honorable young man. I liked this book a lot. It was a fun read with a spunky heroine who knew what she wanted. A darkness from her past haunted her, and her mother's reputation made things extra hard for her. But she took it in stride and loved her mother. I give this book 4 1/2 stars. If you like Regency Romances you must pick this one up for a wonderful read.

The only real problem I had with book was the fact that it was Earl's Inconvenient Wife. So I knew at some point his brother would die. And since we never hear anything about the brother except how perfect he was back home, you knew it was going to be an unfortunate death. I was of course still sorry when Giff got the news - on his wedding day to Temper - it wasn't a surprise. I did enjoy the book and give it 4 1/2 stars. The title was the only thing that really caught me. Excellent writing, keeping the reader in the era well done, protocols well established and followed through with. Well done, Ms. Justiss. Going to get the first book in the series now.

"The Earl's Inconvenient Wife", Book 2 in the "Sisters of Scandal" Series, continues the story of the Lattimar sisters, this time focusing on Temperance. Author Julia Justiss is a marvelous storyteller, creating compelling characters and involving story lines, and all the while infusing her work with rich historical details. In the Regency Era, spirited, intelligent young women with minds of their own were often repressed by the rigid restrictions of society. Any breath of scandal associated with their family often doomed them socially and greatly lessened their chances of making a suitable marital match. Temperance Lattimar, long a subject of vicious gossip to her own mother's unsavory reputation, hoped to avoid marriage and travel the world as her own woman. She cannot do that without funds, however, and her father will not release her dowry until she is presented to society and suffers through one season. A longtime friend, Gifford “Giff” Newell, suggests that his godmother, the unquestionably respectable Lady Sayleford sponsor Temperance, and he will provide safe escort. Giff, a second son, is devoted to his career in politics. When he marries, he must choose a lady whose reputation is above reproach, but that doesn't stop him from wishing that Temperance could be more than a friend. Fate steps in when a cruel trick is played, and Temperance and Giff are forced into a marriage of convenience. They care very much for each other, but now their lives will be quite different than they ever imagined. Will love clear away the shadows, silence the doubts, and let in the light of true happiness? "The Earl's Inconvenient Wife" is a lovely historical romance from very special storyteller Julia Justiss.

Temperance Lattimar hates the hypocrisy of the Ton. They turn a blind eye to the philandering of men, but never forgive or forget when a woman makes a mistake. She and her twin, Prudence, know from experience how it hurts. When their mother is involved in another scandal, they find their London Season in jeopardy. Determined to face down their detractors. Temperance finds a champion in Gifford Newell. He helps Temper go ahead with her presentation. I loved how he cares for this spirited women. He will do anything to protect her. These two are perfect together. They are intelligent, spirited and caring. They won’t back down when they believe in something. When a jealous woman sets them up, they became social outcasts. I was angry that they became social outcasts. I didn’t want them forced into anything. I felt that they should make their own decisions. I loved this story. It has it all - romance, a dark secret and family drama. The characters are well written. I felt connected to them. Julia Justiss has written a wonderful book. She deftly handled Temper’s trauma. I enjoyed The Earl’s Inconvenient Wife.
I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion. ~

The Earl's Inconvenient Wife is the second book of the Sisters of Scandal but can also be read as a stand alone. This is a story facing down the unjust treatment based on another's actions. Temperance and Prudence are the twin daughters of a mother with a scandalous reputation. Since they are almost mirror images of their mother, most in society believe that they are just as amoral. Pru leaves London to find a respectable marriage and Temper stays to stand up to the critics. Gifford is the second son of an earl and is trying to make a name for himself in politics. He has agreed to help sponsor Temper and protect her. The two have been friends forever but feelings start to change. Giff is in need of a rich wife and Temper doesn't want marriage, she wants to travel. Plans change and a forced marriage of convenience leads to a wonderful love story.

I loved the strength of the characters, the adversity that they had to overcome, and the sweet development of their love story. The only thing that I didn't like was that we didn't get to see the villains of the story get their comeuppance.

I received this advanced reader copy from the publisher but all thoughts and feelings are my own.

Living under the cloud created by her mother’s past indiscretions, Temperance has more steel in her than the average Regency miss. She has learned to school her face and her emotions, even if it means swallowing her pride at times. In the face of society’s scorn, she is determined to chart her own course but in order to do so, she first has to endure a season so that she can prove to her father that she is not marriageable material. Her brother’s best friend, Gifford, undertakes to help her by introducing her to his godmother only to be appointed as her protector on her forays into society. Falling prey to malicious scheming, Temper and Giff find themselves in a marriage of convenience, when all their best laid plans are scuttled by unexpected events. I thoroughly enjoyed this well written romance and the gentle wooing of Temper by Giff. Despite his own circumstances, Giff is a charming and protective hero who puts Temper’s needs before his own. Temperance on the other hand, is as resourceful as she is beautiful, able to see beyond the obvious to a person’s character and charm. This warm-hearted romance touched my heart and left me with a smile on my face as I closed the book. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

This is the second book of JJ's on this series, "Sisters of Scandal". While Pru & Johnnie's story was a awesome adventure, I found that Temper's & Giff's story kept me turning the pages to see what happens next. Temper, doesn't ever want to marry (she has a secret) just wants to travel, however; her Father insist she have a season so she could get married & be protected. Gifford Newell, son of Earl of Fensworth & best friend of Temper's brother, Greg. He calls upon his godmother, Lady Sayleford; to help with her season & also finds that he has trapped himself into escorting her.
As this story unfolds it's interesting to see how Temper & Giff have each others back. Then a marriage of convenience to Giff becomes the only option to save Temper's reputation. After a double wedding with her sister & her Father giving both of them away...Temper must face her secret & tell Giff why she is avoiding her duty to him as his wife. JJ did a excellent job in telling this story.
It's one to put on your TBR list.

I absolutely loved this story by Julia Justiss! If you haven't read any of her historical romances you are missing out. The Earl's Inconvenient Wife is the second book in her Sisters of Scandal series and definitely worth reading.
With Lady Sayleford sponsoring her season Temperance Lattimar might have a chance at finding a husband, but it is a whole charade because she has no intention of ever marrying. She hopes with the ending of a disastrous season her father will hand over her allowance and allow her to travel.
All of this means allowing MP and aristocrat Gifford Newell to escort and protect her at all society events. What neither of them plans on is their attraction to one another or the scandal that forces them to marry.
I'm looking forward to reading more wonderful book by Julia Justiss!

I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

This delightful historical romance has a pair of twin sisters, facing their first season, unfairly being judged by the actions of their parents. The main characters are Temperance Lattimer and Gifford Newell, each with their own painful secrets. Having grown up as neighbors and being very friendly, he agrees to help her with her season, while her twin has her first season in Bath.
A spiteful debutante forces him to propose to save her reputation and he promises her the freedom she desires. An accident changes their planned path and both rise to the occasion. Their secrets come out and they make each other stronger and end up with a happy ever after neither expected.
I was given the chance to read and offer an honest opinion on the ARC of this book. I recommend it for anyone looking for a historical with an uplifting ending

After being attacked by one of her mother’s paramours when she was fifteen, Temperance Lattimar never wanted to marry. Her brother’s best friend Gifford Newell, the second son of the Earl of Fensworth, is being harassed by his family to marry a woman with means so that they no longer have to support him and his Parliamentary career. Temper thinks a marriage of convenience in name only is the perfect solution especially after they are involved in a scandal that threatens her reputation. But then his father and brother are killed and suddenly he has to think about more than his political aspirations, but also continuing his line. There was plenty of humor in this sexy Regency romance. I felt for both Temper and Gifford being treated as mistakes by their parents. I loved how patient and understanding he was with her after she told him what happened to her.

Temperance (Temper) Lattimar is too scandalous really because of her family. Lady Sayleford decides to sponsor her and allow her the season she has to have in order to fulfil her dream of releasing her dowry and travelling the world. In order to keep things above board Lady Sayleford recruits her godson to squire her around. He's the second son, an MP and aristocrat, Gifford Newell and a friend of her brother. The two of them embark on the social round and discover that really only one person is distracting them, each other. Then scandal forces them into a marriage of convenience and it gets complicated by both of their pasts.I liked the two of them and the tenderness Gifford gave after the marriage. It was sweet and gentle and lovely and the two characters seemed to be good foils for each other. Really enjoyed the read.
