Salmon Stream

Rate this book
A poetic yet scientifically accurate description of the life cycle of a salmon. This book will inspire children in classrooms and at home to appreciate the world around us! Fast-paced prose and brilliant illustrations follow the salmon from their form as eggs in a stream to the wide ocean, eventually making a hazardous journey home to their stream of origin. Carol Reed-Jones uses cumulative verse, a literary technique that is not only enjoyable but suggests how interconnected salmon are with their habitat. At the back is a section on salmon facts and what makes a good habitat for them, teaching the basics of ecology and why clean streams and waters are so important. A perfect book

Science: Picture Story Book Salmon Life Cycle, Fish Ladder, Alaska

Reed-Jones, Carol. Salmon Stream. Illus. by Maydak, Michael S. CA: Dawn Publications, 2000. Unp. Primary

Set throughout a stream in Alaska, the reader is taught the life cycle of a Salmon through charming repetitive rhyme, third person point-of-view, and bright eye-catching full-page acrylic illustrations. A great blend of sing-song verse, brilliant imagery, and interesting facts about one of Alaska’s most prized ocean animals.

AK: Salmon Life Cycle, Otter, Bear, Trout, Osprey, Fish Ladder, Seal, Sea Lion, Orca

Activity: I would pair this book with a lesson on life cycles, specifically salmon in this case. I would reach out to our local hatchery to see if we could do a field trip there.

"The egg of a salmon, born to travel,
hides in the nest of rocky gravel,
far beyond the shady pool,
filled with water, clear and cool, that flows in the stream in the forest."

Written in cumulative verse (but not so that you have to repeat every line on every page), Reed-Jones takes the reader on the life cycle of the salmon. Don't shy away from using this with middle grade students -- there's a lot to think through including Maydak's illustrations that support and expand the ideas in the text. The well written back matter becomes a second even more informative text for students including fascinating facts and a case for the vital role of the salmon in the ecosystem.

Lushly illustrated, informative book. The repetitive rhyme and engaging illustrations made it a much more effective tool for teaching the salmon lifecycle than our Washington state curriculum. The author does a wonderful job incorporating high level vocabulary in an organic and accessible way. This doesn't feel like a "teaching" book- it's an enjoyable piece of children's literature.

Beautiful illustrations and poetic verses about the life cycle of a salmon. It follows a “This is the house that Jack built” pattern. I’ll definitely use this in the future when teaching salmon in the classroom!

This was a colorful, well-illustrated book that was charming and educational.

Written in a simple verse that illustrates the life cycle of salmon from egg to a full-fledged adult, I felt this was a great book for kids ages 4 to 8 depicting the importance of the salmon's life cycle, as well as the ecological interdependency and significance this species has on the life cycles of other species.

Also included was an informative narrative at the end of the book describing in detail the salmon's entire life cycle, ways that we can help, and different organizations one can contact for more information.

Migrating from stream to sea and back to the streams where they were born to spawn, this book takes you on a visual journey with salmon that is colorful and elegantly conveyed. I felt like I actually learned something... even from a childrens book.

This is a review of the Salmon Stream story
that tells of the salmon in all its glory
where it dwells in the Pacific Northwest.

I'll tell you the pictures are lush and wild
and the text is lyrically compiled
as the lifecycle is taught to adult and child

Loved reading this aloud to students to talk about the salmon eggs hatching in our tank in the library. Love that it is also a riff on "The House That Jack Built"

A circular story that shows the life-cycle of a salmon. Great vocabulary and art made the book interesting for my 4th graders.
