Sequel to Winter Plague—Named one of 2018's TOP TEN ZOMBIE READS by RankingSquad, featured on 13HorrorStreet, and currently being considered for the 5 final nominations in the YA category of this year’s Bram Stoker Awards presented by the Horror Writers Association. Third installment in The Plague series.
Seven long months on the road finds the handful of survivors bruised, battered and almost beaten. With some barely clinging to life, the remaining delta soldiers drag them to the finish line—the Centre for Disease Control.
Winter finds herself so near her sister after a treacherous journey. Yet, when she arrives at the CDC, not all is as it seems. Not unlike the world outside, secrets lurk behind every closed door and the faces surrounding her mask dark intentions. And when one of her group goes missing and another dies, Winter must use her wily ways to uncover the truth about the CDC and what it’s hiding.
But how far will Winter go to save those she’d survived with outside? And, most of all, who is she willing to betray to do so?
Get ready for a Winter Storm…
Trigger warning for mentions of abortion. Written in a combination of US and UK English for symbolic effect.
I devoured this story like a rotter eating brains (except they don't eat brains... as far as anyone knows.)
This book and the ones before it, they aren't about zombies (or rotters/infectees) and the end of the world; they're about people. Normal, non-heroic people just trying to survive while navigating the mundane (like the way female characters actually worry about, y'know, "girl problems") and the sort of friend/lover/enemy relationships that warrant an "it's complicated" status. While I could bang on about how the UK/US English can sometimes feel a bit out of place, I'd rather sing from the rooftops about how terrifyingly well those relationships are explored. The words are sparse, but their meaning... Winter sees more than she realises, only there's the knowing-audience-smugness that says actually we both know what's going on. Winter and Leo, Winter and Castle, Winter and Summer... There is so much nuance in each of their scenes, yet it still keeps you guessing right until the very end. Now the group have reached the CDC, there may be fewer mentions of the walking not-exactly-dead, but don't think there's any less tension because they're safely stowed away in a bunker.
Honestly, this one kept me on the edge of my seat. Language oddities aside, this series of post apocalyptic adventure with a feminist slant is far deeper than I'd imagined it could be. Winter may be a jumbled up sort of character, but her reliably unreliable narration sets the scene so well that it's sure to draw you in to her Days of Doom.
-I received a free copy of this ebook from the author. I chose to review it under no obligation because I loved it-
I am so satisfied with the way this series ended, especially with things between Winter and Castle! There were a lot of things that happened, with more twists and surprises strewn about. Some I saw coming, and others that totally threw me for a curveball.
I'm glad that things worked out for Winter and Castle, even if I did want to see more of them being a couple, or a better look into how Castle feels/thinks of Winter. I wish his drawings of Winter could have been more explained, or focused more on Castle. Maybe in a future short story/extra??
I sort of had a feeling that Winter finding Summer was too good to be true. And well, the truth is revealed and not all is what it seems. There is death, fighting, fighting to stay alive, heartbreak, surprises, living and a little bit of romance in Winter's apocalyptic world but at least she and the others at the CDC they're in have a future ahead of them to look forward to.
Winter Miles may have signed off, but I look forward to reading more!
Very seldom does a book keep me up reading on a work night, yet I could not put this book down! Winter finally gets to the CDC and Summer, but the story has some huge surprises and twists. Castle, Leo and the deltas may not be the bad guys after all. Winter is a character that well written. Her unique ways of handling the apocalypse and the men in her life kept me glued until the end! Great ending to this series!
I absolutely loved this series, except for the end.
Isla Jones - Please check out some reverse harem/menage books - you had a perfect set-up for a wonderful romance with two men... :( (I tease :))
Overall though, fantastic read and I really enjoyed many aspects of the MC. Only small blips were the obvious choice of one mate and the main plot twist in the book between the sisters (I feel that wasn't explained enough). Oh well!
Love this series! Cleo was just my favorite character ever. I have a chihuahua and Cleo was just so perfectly written. I love who Winter ended up with, not to spoil anything. The twists and turns were just so shocking and I absolutely devoured this series. Read it!
Absolutely love the whole series!! Enjoyed the ending to Winter story but so sad that’s it’s finished but I am also looking forward to read more from one of my go to authors.
This entire series was amazing! Couldn’t put it down until I finished the entire trilogy. The protagonist was real and raw with 2 flawed, multifaceted heros fighting for her heart and affections.
