Christine Pope

A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Many reams of dead trees later, she’s happy to announce that her debut novel, Fringe Benefits, was published by Pink Petal Books on April 8, 2010. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the new journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Her paranormal novella, Playing With Fire, was released on August 5, 2010.

While Fringe Benefits is a straight contemporary romance, she writes in a variety of genres, including paranormal romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, and historical romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection.

After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor in addition to writing fiction. She lives with her husband and an explosively fluffy Pomeranian mix. Her house is pink, but don’t hold that against her.

The Witching Hour: 10 Enchanting Novels Featuring Witches, Wizards, Vampires, Shifters, Ghosts, Fae, and More! is a fabulous boxset set to captivate from the very start. Full of paranormal, fantasy, romance, adventure, intrigue, witches, wizards, shifters, ghosts, Fae, spice, violence, chemistry, tension, dramatic developments, and wonderful world-building- there’s much to keep you engrossed.
Some of these authors I am familiar with, but a few were new to me, which is always exciting to find new works/writers to add to my author list and TBR.
Ten talented authors each weave their own story but keep within the ‘paranormal’ theme. All the stories are individual, with their own unique take on the theme- all creating their own identity, mood, and tone within the collection.
The Box Set Contains:

Darkangel (The Witches of Cleopatra Hill Book #1) By: Christine Pope
‘Finding the man of your dreams can be a real nightmare….
As the future prima, or head witch of her clan, Angela McAllister is expected to bond with her consort during her twenty-first year, thus ensuring that she will come into her full powers at the appointed time. The clock is ticking down, and her consort has yet to make an appearance. Instead, her dreams are haunted by a man she’s never seen, the one she believes must be her intended match.
But with time running out, and dark forces attempting to seize her powers for their own, Angela is faced with a terrible choice: give up her dreams of the man she may never meet and take the safer path, or risk leaving her clan and everyone in it at the mercy of those who seek their ruin.’
~Witches, adventure, & high stakes. This is another book that I have read previously but have enjoyed again- as anything Ms. Pope writes is bound to be an engaging read. And I have already hunted down more of the series to read- so stay tuned…
(15 Book Series)

SACRIFICE ME (Sacrifice Me Series Episodes #1 – 6) By: Sarra Cannon
‘On her twenty-first birthday, Franki Smith receives a dozen black roses and an unsigned invitation to a nightclub that doesn't seem to exist. The dark gift haunts her because of two handwritten words near the top. Little Bird. Her mother's nickname for her.
Only, Franki's mother disappeared from her life without a trace exactly three years ago to the day.
Who sent the mysterious invitation? Franki's need to answer this question will lead her to the doorway of a strange and dangerous new world. A world her mother went to great lengths to keep hidden.
A world someone desperately wants Franki to discover.’
~This was an engrossing story that kept me flipping the pages to find out what Well worth the read.

MAGIC IN THE BLOOD: La Bruja Roja #1 By: Kat Parrish
‘Aixa Riley lives in two worlds. The daughter of an American father and a Mexican mother, she is heir to a tradition of magic older than the nations that claim her as a citizen and is the latest member of her mother’s family to be known as la bruja roja, the red witch.
Aixa’s hometown, Sangre de Cristo, is located on the border between the US and Mexico but also straddles the invisible divide between the land of the living and the realm of the dead. Aixa is a resident of both those worlds as well and can see trouble coming in all directions.
When dangerous sorceress Rosamara Quintana allies with an ambitious drug lord nicknamed “El Tiburon” (the shark) and their plans threaten to destroy Sangre De Cristo, Aixa summons her own potent powers to save her life, her love, and her very soul, aided by the local padre, the ghost of her grandmother—herself a red witch—and her sexy undercover boyfriend.’
~An original storyline which made for an intriguing read.

ELEMENTAL ARCANE (The Eldritch Files Book #1) By: Phaedra Weldon
‘Samantha Hawthorne lives a rather curious life in New Orleans running a magic and herb shop. As an Elemental Witch in the Big Easy and owner of a wolf Familiar as well as the head of a former Faerie Queen, curious is as quiet as it gets for Sam.
Until children start turning into blood-thirsty Changelings and attack their parents.
When one of these children shows up in front of her shop, Sam and her friends are determined to find out where they’re coming from and where the exchanged children are being kept and put a stop to it. But will they succeed when they find themselves pitted against ninja ghouls, one of the oldest and darkest enemies of the mortal world, and a secret from Sam’s childhood that could unravel her magic?’
~Magic and New Orleans go hand in hand- so I was already hooked before I’d even read a word. An enticing paranormal story that kept me engaged the whole way through. Am looking forward to the rest of the series now, too.
(11 Book Series)

SWEET DESIRE (The Transformed Series Book #12.5) By: Stacy Claflin
‘Fate can only be avoided for so long. Gessilyn's time is up.
She has been living a quiet life, pretending to be human for many years, but now she's a witch on the run. Her old coven has found her—and they want Gessilyn dead.
If she’s to survive, Gessilyn must return to her roots and learn magic from a father she never knew. The power within her reveals itself to be stronger than she can handle. As a result, Gessilyn finds herself more of a risk to herself than anyone else is until she can learn to control it.
While needing to focus on all she has to learn, Gessilyn finds herself increasingly drawn to Killian, the handsome loner in her father’s coven. She tries to ignore her growing feelings, but they only intensify. Will she be able to hone her powers in time to defeat her old coven, or will Killian distract her and be her downfall?’
~Even though this is book #12.5 in the series, it can be read as a standalone. Magic. Witches. Danger. Suspense. Adventure. And romance…. What’s not to love?
(19 Book Series)

CRESCENT CALLING (The Crescent Witch Chronicles Book #1) By: Nicole R. Taylor
‘Skye Williams is an ordinary woman, living an ordinary life.
Or so she thought.
When she receives news of her estranged mother’s death, she must go to Ireland to claim her inheritance, but when she arrives in the tiny village of Derrydun, she isn’t prepared for what she finds nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Emerald Isle.
Lumped with a funeral, her mother's crystal shop, a moody goth girl for an employee, and a crumbling cottage with horrible floral curtains, selling up and getting out sounds like a great plan, but everything and everyone seems determined to keep her from going home.
Skye doesn’t want any part of her mother’s life or the people of Derrydun until she sees the hot Irishman she’s been crushing on turn into a fox.
More absurdly, he tells her dead mother was a witch who battled evil fairies, there’s magical trees growing in the centre of the village, there’s a parallel universe where the fair folk live, and she’s meant to be the last defense of the magical peoples of Ireland.
Turns out Skye Williams was never an ordinary woman. Not by a long shot.
She’s the last Crescent Witch and has a destiny to fulfil.
Whether she likes it or not.’
~Magic. Shifters. Witches. Danger. Adventure. High Stakes. Forbidden Romance- made for a fun read.
(4 Book Series)

BLOODSICK (Scarlett Bernard Series Book #0.1) By: Melissa F. Olson
‘All her life, Sashi’s mother warned her not to get involved with werewolf problems. But Sashi, a witch who uses healing magic on sick and injured bodies, has never made a habit of ignoring trauma. When she meets an abused shapeshifter that no one else seems willing to help, Sashi will risk everything –including her fledgling relationship – to save a woman who can’t save herself.
~This is the intriguing prequel to what looks set to be a great series. Paranormal. Magic. Witches. Shifters. And more…
(5 Book Series)

WITCH WAYS (Now titled ‘Witch Choices’) (Witch School Series Book #1) By: Kristy Tate
‘Each day, each of us must decide whether or not to be a witch. For Evelynn Marston, that decision is becoming increasingly difficult. Evie Marston didn’t mean to burn down the science room. A little anger, some flames, and an expulsion later, Evie finds herself destined to spend the rest of her high school career at Despaign Academy—a school named after Connecticut’s last convicted witch. That should have been a clue. Despite its shadowy past, Despaign has the same cliques as other schools. Evie struggles to fit in and to be noticed by the handsome and mysterious Dylan Fox—that is, until she casts her first spell. But even in a magical place, evil lurks. When Evie’s neighbor turns up dead, Evie must rely on her newfound powers and friends to find the truth. But bringing a killer to justice may require stronger magic and true love, the kind that can’t be found in a potion.
~A paranormal ‘academy’ story with drama, angst, danger, mystery, investigation, and romance- made for another fun read in this collection.
(3 Book Series)

SHADES OF MAGICK (Daughters of the Craft Trilogy Book #1) By: Julia Crane
‘The good, the bad and the Grey…
Kalista Blackthorn is one of three Grey Witches attending the prestigious Kingsbridge University, a place where supernaturals blend in with unsuspecting humans. When female co-eds begin to go missing, it’s quickly apparent that a supernatural is responsible.
Everyone is a suspect, even the ancient warrior that Kalista is unnaturally compelled towards. Ragnar ignites the darkness in Kalista that she has been desperately keeping at bay since she was a young girl. Their romance seems doomed before it even starts, but some bonds even death can’t erase.
Soon, it becomes clear that the witches are being blamed for the women’s deaths. Can they find the killer and clear their names? Or will the dark power threatening everyone on campus destroy them all?’
~I enjoyed this book, and was happy to see that it was part of a trilogy- but when I went looking, I could only find two books, so I don’t know if there is more to come. But I will read the second book anyway- to find out what happens there.
(2 Book Series)

CAGED WOLF (The Tarot Witch Series Book #1) By: S.M. Reine
‘The biker gangs passing through Lobo Norte don't scare Ofelia anymore. All those men are the scarred, homeless, and broken...just like Ofelia. They've become a blur of forgettable faces watching her strip. She takes off her clothes, takes their money, and wipes them from her memory instantly. But Trouble is different. A biker with a wolf tattoo and tortured eyes, he sees beyond Ofelia's tough disguise to a more fragile woman within. She's drawn to him like she's never been drawn to a man before--at least, not since she survived hideous torture at the hands of her ex-boyfriend that left her scarred physically and emotionally. She can't forget Trouble. And she definitely can't push him away. There's magic between them that neither understands. But maybe if Ofelia and Trouble can find the truth, they can release each other from the chains that bind them to Lobo Norte, to the Fang Brothers biker gang, and to the dark secrets in their pasts...’
~This was not what I expected, but in a good way. It had so much more going on that drew me in and kept me flipping the pages to find out what happens. I have already purchased the rest of the series to explore asap.

I was pleasantly surprised by this collection of stories as there was not one story here that I didn’t like. They were all great, and quite well written.
Happy Reading…

Thank you to all the contributing authors!

Magic in the Blood by Kat Parrish

Elemental Arcane by Phaedra Weldon

Sweet Desire by Stacy Claflin

This is book is a part of the Transformed series it can be read as a standalone so you can read it without reading any of the other books in a certain order. This book is about Gessilyn who has been in several other books in this world such as some of the Transformed series and the Curse of the Moon series. I really enjoyed coming back and reading this book because I got to see how she got to where she is today and how she met her family. It was a truly beautiful story that just made you feel for her and the situations she was placed in. I really look forward to seeing more of her and her family as she goes through her journey.

Crescent Calling by Nicole R. Taylor

Bloodsick by Melissa F. Olson

Witch Ways by Kristy Tate

Witch Ways is the first book in the Witch Ways series and it was a refreshing new tale that just dragged you into its world and didn’t want to let go until you turned the last page. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Chaos Conspiracy by Holly Evans

The Witching Hour contains eleven full length, first in a series novels by eleven authors. This may be a good deal if you don't have any of these books. I have six of them but only read one so far. I also have books by four or five of the other authors that aren't in this set. I'm sorry but I haven't read any of the books I have. I will update this review as I read this set. There are a couple of authors that I have read their books and they rated three to four stars. So to be fair, I'm rating this set as four stars.

Christine Pope, HIDDEN GIFTS - Previously published.
Yasmine Galenorn, BEWITCHING BEDLAM -
Sarra Cannon, SACRIFICE ME, SEASON ONE - Previously published.
Kat Parrish, MAGIC IN THE BLOOD -
Phaedra Weldon, ELEMENTAL ARCANE - Previously published.

Stacy Claflin, SWEET DESIRE - Sweet Desire - Awesome, hope there's more. A well written, intriguing, suspense fantasy with tension and a well developed paranormal cast. The author created a story that pulls you in and doesn't let you go. If you enjoy Butcher and C. Harris, you will enjoy Sweet Desire. I didn't appreciate Lost Wolf, which is a spinoff of this story concerning the werewolf members, but this story has to develop into a series with the main character. I contacted the author to review her books since I've never been disappointed, except once - Lost Wolf, with her work. 5*

Nicole R. Taylor, CRESCENT CALLING - Previously published.
Melissa F. Olson, BLOODSICK -
Kristy Tate, WITCH WAYS -
Holly Evans, CHAOS CONSPIRACY -
SM Reine, CAGED WOLF - Previously published.

It was a very interesting set of stories except for , Sweet Desire. The main character was very whiney and lack the backbone of a strong person. Expecting others to do for you and whining when things don’t work out is boring.
I enjoyed the other stories and now read the works by some of them as their writing was excellent! Phaedra Weldon’s story was excellent , I read the rest of the books in the series! SM Reines’ was a story had not read for a while and I enjoyed reading it again! Christine’s Pope’s was excellent and I read a couple more in the series. You might enjoy the book as I ddI except for one story.

There are some great stories and authors included in this series. I really recommend it. I like that you can discover great new authors from these sets.

I love paranormal romances and the stories included are diverse and all well-written. Yasmine Galenorn is one of my favorite authors. They will leave you wanting to read more of the books to see how the story continues.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

The Kat Parrish book is spectacular. The Pope book was good. The Tate book was OK. The Olson book is essential if you read her others (Scarlet Bernard, etc.) The Taylor book was good, and got me to read the rest of the series. Crane started a series arc that never finished, so enjoy it here. Reine’s book was readable but the violence to women turned me off. All the others were all super skip / DNF. (This was the 2nd time I tried Weldon’s book and still couldn’t get through it.)

Sweet Desire by Stacy Claflin

I first read about Gessilyn and Toby in this author's Curse of the Moon series, which I love. Gessilyn is more powerful than she even knows. She meets Killian from her dad's coven and their is instant chemistry. Loved how protective he is of her. If you like paranormal and romance then this is the book for you.

Many good books.

Pick and choose from many examples of the genre. Most of the books were great starters for a series, But not interesting enough that I would pay money for more books.

Discovered 2 new authors, was reminded of an author I loved (went back and read her series) and found one novel about a teenager (I don't ever read teenager stuff) that was pretty good. Love when I discover new (for me) authors.

Nice collection of writing styles. Good way to discover new authors you might like. Only one book in the group needs better editing, too many mistakes becomes annoying. This was free on Google Play so grab it while it's free even if you're not into fantasy books. You might like one or two of them.

A few great stories in this volume

I have read five of the 10 stores in this volume as freebies before. Two of them, I felt, were worth rereading.

There are no stories in this book that are really horrible! There is however, one that drags all the others down.
