The year is nineteen-seventeen. America has just gone to war. Ruth Garland has earned her nursing certificate and looks forward to fulfilling her dream of becoming a medical missionary. She returns home to visit her sister, Rachel, and learns Rachel has only a few weeks to live. Rachel begs Ruth to promise to take care of her three children. "Bring them up in the church. Show them how to live a Christian life." Ruth promises. And then her sister asks her to keep one more promise... "My dear husband has agreed. When I am gone, will you marry my Henry?"
Billie Houston writes Christian themed romance novels. She is a widow, the mother of three, and the grandmother of seven wonderful grandchildren. She is also a former English teacher and has worked with special needs children. Her venture into Christian themed romances began when her husband of many years fell victim to Alzheimer's. She writes romantic tales about relationships; stories that explore the problems and pleasures of living a Christian life. The plots revolve around ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances and faced with difficult decisions. She likes poetry, George Strait's music, old movies and Earl Grey tea. Her hobbies are reading, quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, taking long walks, and growing house plants and herbs.
Good story.. a few grammatical errors, but I've seen worse. Some of this story takes place during the time of the Spanish Flu and little did the author know when writing the story, how closely the descriptions of things would be to what we are going through now with Covid.. It was a quick read and I highly recommend it.
This is an amazing book. Everything about it spoke to my heart. I loved the character of Ruth and how the Lord shaped her into the Saint he wanted her to be. I loved how Henry accepted the Lord and stood along side Ruth. The children were a lovely part of the family. Rosie was so special. Mrs. Murphy plays such an important person in the story. Her character is strong and she is a wonderful gem of a housekeeper/cook. She and Faith who also joins the household as nursemaid to the children are both Christians. The story weaves itself in and out using faith and Bible verses here and there. Thank you Billie Houston for a beautiful story. I absolutely loved it!
This book brought tears to my eyes….I loved the character Ruth, so strong, she stood up to anyone that did injustice to others…she never backed down. Her journey was trying, the love her and Henry grew to share with each other was so touching….each giving each other the time and space they needed. Fulfilling her dying sister’s wishes. A great read don’t pass it up! The Potters Wheel!
Overall this was a good story, and I enjoyed it. However, I really struggled with Ruth as a character. Yes, she was a strong woman and she grew and became more mature throughout the story, but even today she would not have been a respected woman in some ways. The way she talked and treated people was terrible, and for 100 years ago was absolutely scandalous. I don't think her character was quite realistic enough.
I am always looking for a Christian novel to read. However, so many of them are just too fluffy. The perfect woman meets the perfect man and Aunt happily ever after. However, this story talks about a real life, struggling Christian woman. I love the fact, biblical verses are shared throughout the story. It is a story of real struggles about walking in faith and still being Human. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.
This book was well written , historically accurate and relevant for our own lives. I liked it because of its Christian faith and life lessons. I would recommend it for any age.
What a wonderful book. The writing style was so easy to keep turning pages. I love the storyline and the characters. This book is set during one is the most difficult times in American history. The first Great War and the flu epidemic. What a wonderful message behind the storyline. Loved it!!
A most interesting journey through Ruth's growth into the woman God would have her to be. Great examples of grace and mercy in the lives of numerous people. Well written and entertaining.
This is the only book that I have ever wrenched out a no while reading. This is when little Pearl Rose died from the flu. It broke my heart. I was so engrossed, it was like I was right there. I highly recommend this book.
Set at a pivotal historic period, the story shows characters growing in their understanding of God and faith through many trials. Family and trust are important parts of the story.
Such a good story. It’s a fairly easy read but with such depth. I really “felt” the characters. I cried, I laughed, I praised, and I worshiped. Very inspirational.
Very entertaining and faith based. Life doesn't turn out as expected to be but relying on God it can be more than we hoped. Ruth had many obstacles to overcome
A lovely, but sometimes v sad, book. I found I really engaged with the characters. Although it was set during the Spanish flu, it resonated with me, what we are going through now with covid. I can empathise with Ruth's character 'why God'? As I have lost my dad during this time. It's hard to come to the place where we just have to trust God. I have it on my kindle.
