She undertook her undergraduate studies at the Holy Ghost College. She became a scholar of the French government at Université d'Aix-Marseille. She received her doctoral degree in Philippine Studies from the University of the Philippines
She won the Art Criticism Award of the Art Association of the Philippines in 1976. From 1995 to 1996 she continued research in Japan under a Japan Foundation Fellowship. She has written widely on art, culture, and politics, and has read papers in numerous local and international conferences.
In 1999, she was awarded the distinction of Centennial Honoree for the Arts (Art Criticism) by the Cultural Center of the Philippines. She currently teaches at the Department of Art Studies, College of Arts and Letters, University of the Philippines.
