Deltik is a hostile, dust-ball of a planet. With only one spaceport in the capital city, getting out of dodge will be anything but a walk in the park for escaped slaves Alina and Jalek.
While on the run from their captors, they stumble across a hapless gambler who offers a solution to all of their problems. Their captors, however, will stop at nothing to apprehend them and just as it seems they might finally have caught a lucky break, they discover their newest acquaintance has more baggage than it first seemed…
This short sci-fi adventure novel was light, fast, and fun! Alina and Jalek are two escaped slaves fleeing a criminal organization on the planet Kendara, a cross between Tatooine and the post-apocalytpic Earth of the Mad Max series.
Along the way they encounter a gambler down on his luck who leads them to a ship that may be the key to their escape—if they can get it working before the crime lords catch up to them.
This book was an enjoyable, quick read. The action was immersive, though a bit heavy at first; I really got into the story once they reached the ship and Alina started investigating the mystery around it, which I won’t spoil here! The characters, while not super fleshed out, are sympathetic, especially Alina. This is definitely her story and I’ll be interested to know where it goes in the sequel.
My main critique of this book is that the setting is a bit too generic. I would have liked to learn more details about the world that would have made it stand out from other sci-fi action-adventure stories. However, this is a series starter, so hopefully the worlds of Kendara, Chandra and Salus will be developed in future installments.
A short novel that left a lasting mark, expertly woven together at a relentless pace this is science fiction action at its finest. T J Eastwood delivers a unique and interesting universe set on the edge of civilization. You're dropped straight into the heat of it with the two main protagonists on the run from a deadly foe. Through each growing obstacle the characters continued to endear themselves to me as their motivations and their pasts are revealed. Loved reading and can't wait for more from this author.
I know I’ve experienced a good story when I am anxious to continuing to read stories and adventures with the same characters. That how I felt when finishing Avalanche.
Avalanche is an action filled Sci-fi Space Opera novella that follows two primary characters through fast paced adventures (and mis-adventures) and set the stage for what could be one or more full-length novels. The writing places the reader squarely in the world and does a great job developing the characters from the first moments to the last.
I highly recommend if you are a fan of Dune, Star Wars, or Firefly.
I really enjoyed reading this book, I could not put it down! The extravagant descriptions in the beginning held me from diving into the plot at first, but around the second chapter I was hooked. I can't wait to read more of Alina and Jalik's adventures!
