SO THRILLING TO READ, I forgive any plot holes and premise fails. Yes, there was a point that I thought author B.C. Chase had written himself into a corner, but by the end, I was actually crying (mascara running-type crying). I loved the idea of a 75-year-old astronaut, and his perspective on the astronaut experience as an “outsider.” Made me feel like I was right there with him. I shared his confusion and awe for the science and spectacle of space travel.
Chase certainly did his homework when crafting this book. His research and list of sources was impressive, and made the space station and astronaut experience feel real and tremendously exciting. What was missing, for me anyway, was an equal/balanced research effort into the AI element to make it more plausible. Why was NASA not able to determine the source of the invitation message? Why are the astronauts so slow to grow suspicious with a billion-to-one failure rate coincidences? Why does a 75-yr-old brain have “better” memories than a genius astronaut’s brain? What did Pluto have to do with ANY of it, after all?
The story was creative, suspenseful, awe-inspiring, and heart-rending. So, even though I thought the plot was getting a little off-kilter towards the end, I still enjoyed the ride (read) 100%. In my heart, I wanted Jim’s kind-heartedness (love) to win in the end. Certainly, love triumphed, but what about Jim? I hung in there all the way through to the Epilogue, and I still don’t know. But at least, I have hope?
