Connie Flynn's bestselling novels have been praised as "thought-provoking, mystical, and hauntingly moving" (Rendezvous) and "brilliant" (Bookbrowser). In The Dragon Hour, she once again takes readers back through time, where a modern man discovers that the fate of a medieval kingdom lies in his hands -- and in his heart...

I have been writing fiction for so long I can barely remember when I didn't. Sometimes people ask where I get my ideas and I can't comment too much on "ideas" either, since they come one at a time from different sources. SHADOW ON THE MOON came from a submission call for paranormal romance and since vampires were fairly well owned already, I decided to do werewolves. After that it became--and this is true for all books--a matter of putting the story together, scene by scene, then going back and making sure to leave in the good parts and take out the boring parts (which is my writing motto).

That seems to work for me. I've made a half dozen or so national bestseller lists, won a PRISM award for my sci-fi time-travel and been a finalist in a number of other well known writing contest. Now, I'm jumping into the pool of previously traditionally published authors who are choosing to publish independently. I'm truly enjoying the freedom and control this gives an author.

I guess I need to read descriptions better. This is a romantic fantasy, as stated on the cover of the book. However the previous review I read didn't make that clear to me. I probably would not have got it as I'm not into romances. It was a good story, however. Involves a dragon (that isn't a dragon), time travel, the mob. Actually sounds interesting, doesn't it?

Originally read this back in high school. Took a while to find it again, and was happy to snatch it up at a used bookstore.

We all know there are consequences to our actions, and sometimes the consequences are greater than we could have imagined. Luke Slade finds this out after he and his cousin participate in a bank robbery gone wrong and Luke, carrying his wounded cousin, falls through a portal in Manhattan and finds himself trapped in Scotland in 1672. Before the portal closes, some of the bad guys chasing them manage to come through as well. An interesting problem awaits. This particular part of Scotland is haunted by a dragon, and Luke fits the description on the dragon slayer who saved the area by killing their last dragon many years previously. Are you intrigued yet? I hope so because this is a romp through time that has a lot to recommend it. I enjoyed myself immensely while I read this, and I think you will too.

The Dragon Hour by Connie Flynn
Luke is drawn into an unwanted adventure when his cousin Kevin is pulled into a supposed harmless robbery. The adventure takes them out of NYC and puts them in an unexpected time and place.
Lochlorriane is a Scottish town of the 1600s. It has been pulled into some type of alternate universe along with a predatory dragon. Luke, Kevin and some thugs find themselves joining this bubble universe much to their dismay.
Luke and Kevin meet the loves of their lives and yet need to return home. Caryn, meets her hero but finds he isn’t what she expected.
This is an entertaining book that I recommend.

I don't read much fantasy, however, the time travel aspect of THE DRAGON HOUR caught my attention. I was also interested in seeing what sort of mayhem modern day thugs might cause in a 16th-century Scottish village. All in all, I had a good time with the book. The initial transition from the 1600s to modern times was a tiny bit bumpy, but I stuck with it because the character of Luke was so compelling. He's a reluctant bad boy with a soft spot for the weak and powerless. When he, his cousin Randy, and several not-so-nice gangsters end up back in Lochlorraine, a village that exists in a bubble torn free of time, it is completely believable.

Flynn's heroine is not your traditional damsel in distress. She's a thirty-five-year-old widow who has a place of power in her land, but this power is only based on the support and good nature of her brother-in-law, the Earl. He's the medieval equivalent of an absent minded professor. There are forces in Lochlorraine, that would like to see the dotty Earl deposed and Lady Caryn put back in the correct place for a woman. Marco, the leader of the gangsters, exploits this divide for his own ends.

Lady Caryn's main focus is on healing and on killing the dragon who has been terrorizing her people. She's put her faith in the return of Sir Lucas, who defeated the vile Ormeskirk once before. She confuses Luke with this Sir Lucas and decides that he is the dragon slayer returned. Luke, on the other hand, knows that "the beast" is actually a flying dinosaur trapped in the bubble the same way he is. He doesn't want to kill it. He does, however, want Caryn. Despite his feelings for her, his main focus is getting his cousin back home for lifesaving medical care.

At one point, using a ring made from a piece of the mythical philosopher's stone, Luke does escape back to his own time and gets Randy to a hospital. Lady Caryn follows. Here I thought Flynn rushed the story a little. I would have liked to see more of Lady Caryn's reaction to modern New York City. I also question the author's decision to have Marco fall madly in love with Lady Caryn, which clouds his judgement and leads to his ultimate downfall during the final confrontation with Ormeskirk. His passion is a mania that seems to come out of nowhere and overruns all of his plans to seize the Earldom. I kept trying to figure out if he'd drunk a love potion or been the subject of some magical working, something to account for this out-of-the-blue obsession.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and felt that the author brought it to a believable and satisfying conclusion.

Time travel with a difference. A Scottish clan set adrift in time, invaded by present-day hoodlums (not their choice of course). Prehistoric creatures, medieval and modern bullies and intrigues. Science and superstition. Courage and cowardice. Lies and trust. A flawed dragon slayer who wants his dragon to live!
Let the author’s seemingly limitless imagination take you on this amazing journey.

Ah shucks, folks this has ADULT content. It doesn't add anything to a great tale, just distracts. A tale of time travel, adventure, romance and history. Luke Slade gets transported to Scotland 1692, along with his cousin Randy, plus several thugs from an armored car robbery.

Luke is transported from modern times to a hunk of Scotland that is floating in a time bubble from seventeen hundreds. It's fast paced and jam paced with dragons, schemes, and good characters conflicts.

I enjoyed this book and the fact that the hero was NOT an alpha male. That made this timetravel book that much more real. And the reasons why he did what he did, the decisions he made, that much more human.
I'd enjoy another book in this "universe".

Very good book. I was sorry to have it end. Author did a great job, a little predictable but still a very good read. It is nice to see a book with an antihero, instead of the usual person with absolutely no flaws.
