Succubus #4

Gnome Place Like Home

Rate this book
Rampaging orc armies. Vicious bounty hunters. Hot lady robots. Just another day in the life of Ian the Warlock and his succubus Alaria. On the run from a goblin mob boss, Ian and Alaria travel to a distant land to kill her next ex-master - who just happens to be a gnome. Like the other villains before him, this one plans to make SHORT work of our heroes! (Sorry, bad joke.) In addition to saving themselves, our intrepid duo has to deal with a host of other problems - including steampunk war machines, female elf sex cults, and the end of the world. This is a story featuring naked women, threesomes, kinky sex, demons, warlocks, violence, revenge, and moral quandaries. If you’re an old granny lady who’s going to clutch your pearls every time a woman’s breasts are described or somebody gets naked, this book is not for you.

This 4th instalment in A.J.Markam's Succubus series was not a particularly strong one. It was readable enough and had some fun moments but it also had a few dull moments. As always this Litporn series offers a decent mix of LitRPG style action and adventure, humour, and erotica.

If you have made it to the 4th book in this series then chances are you are already well aware of the strengths and flaws of the series so I'll not bore anyone by listing them again as my reviews of the earlier books are likely full of my thoughts on them!

The plot for this 4th book was fairly simple. Now that Ian and Alaria are reunited again they get back to the task of hunting down her old masters. In the firing line this time is a crazed gnome warlock. On top of being a powerful warlock the guy was also a bit of a mad scientist so he and his crazed inventions (mostly robots) gave Ian and the others plenty of trouble! Outside of that Ian also had to deal with a persistent bounty hunter and a sex cult.

I think the action was the flaw in this instalment. Some of it was funny but it was never all that exciting and did have a tendency to run a bit too long at times. It was hard to take the gnome seriously as the main villain even if he did end up being one of the more problematic villains Ian has faced so far in the series. The bounty hunter felt more of a serious threat but he played a smaller role in the story. I thought the stuff with the sex cult was going to be awful but it actually ended up being quite amusing.

Most of the character development in this one was focused on Alaria. We got to see a new side of her thanks to one of the gnome's weird experiments. I feel like it did help grow her character but I'm not sure it was all positive as she ended up a lot more passive and damsel in distress like than we are used to. She is usually more kick-ass than Ian! Ian was mostly just Ian. The guy is a complete ass but despite that he still proves a fairly fun character to follow and it is usually easy to root for him as the people he ends up facing are usually a lot worse than he is.

The other thing I did find noteworthy was the fact that Ian did not spend any time outside of the game in this instalment. Which always seems a bit of a pity as I think there is potential for some fun happenings back in the "real" world. That said, I do like the fact that Ian mostly just treats the game world like it is a real world.

This finished with a real twist that has the potential to really change the direction of the series so it will be interesting to see how it all plays out in the next one. I'm still not sure how I feel about it.

All in all this was not one of the more exciting books in the series but it was still an OK read. This is not a series that takes itself seriously so the humour and Markam's fairly engaging writing style make these books entertaining enough to be fun reads.

Rating: 3 stars.

Audio Note: As always Iggy Toma did a fantastic job with the audio. He is great with the voices and really gets the tone of the story and brings it all to life. I'm sure he is half the reason these books are as fun as they are!

Loved it!!!

This series keeps getting better! You can tell a great author by those that step out of the norm. I won't leave any hints ad to what happens but this book is even more a finger nail biter than the last. Looking forward to where our author takes the book from here.

Book 4 of the series and Succubus is still as amusing as ever.

Alaria remains the key to this series success as her characterisation is excellent, but we do get to meet some other great new characters in this story. Orlo the gnome being the highlight - there is some great banter when we meet him, very funny stuff, the author A.J. Markam has a great sense of humour which really works for me.

Probably the most humorous section though is when we meet the elf sex cult. Just when you think nothing can top the lustful ice elf's from book 2, A.J. Markam comes up with something very original. Ian has a very hard time of it this time!

A great read.

Now this book in the series was excellent! Inconceivable? The action and plot was quite good. A think a book is as good as its villains, and this one had many villains. Of course, there is the matter of the cliffhanger! I need to read the next book now.

Guilty pleasure

I started reading this series on a whim. It quickly became a guilty pleasure I can’t put down on every new release. This books a little down from the previous books, but still an enjoyable read none the less.

More of the same, nothing really much to say here. It's amusing at times, it's wish fulfillment all the way. It is what it is.

A book for those who like litRPG, erotica and nerdy stuff (like references to fantasy, StarWars and other things nerdy). Not nearly as good as the books before.

A greedy gnome and his toys

Ian fought an uphill battle this book. With dangers everywhere and his team not whole. I was saddened to read he lost something precious to him.

Sex, Evil Gnome, War Golems, another Hunter, Sex Cult

Crazy gnome Orlo and his succubus Soraiya. Orlo is the next master of Alaria to be killed. He’s figured out a way to translate demon souls into robotic bodies, while leaving the demons body as a mindless slave.

After a requisite threesome with Soraiya, Ian, Stig, and Alaria get captured, and Alaria’s soul gets translated into a robotic body against her will.

Orlo is building an army of war golems, which he will sell or rent to the highest bidder.

The team befriends Grung, a war golem that has conveniently escaped Orlo’s control.

While pursuing Orlo, the team is ambushed by Shylock, a hunter (come to get Ian to pay his debts accrued several books ago, which have accumulated a ton of interest). Grung and quicksand together overcome the super-powered hunter, at least for the time being.

Soon enough, the group tracks Orlo down and find he has 23 of his war golems camped with a war-army of Orcs 10,000 strong. And the Orcs have a war god 100’ tall (who Ian quickly figures out is Dorp’s go to illusion, so Dorp must be in the camp).

Ian pursues making apologies to Dorp, but fails to re-earn his trust. Ian calls on all his friends in chat to come and help, and just in the nick of time a PC Army arrives. Half of the war golems, the Orcs, and Orlo mix it up with the PCs. Graveyards become an issue. Shylock returns. Ian manages to distract him with interest in gold that Orlo now has.

Alaria’s mechanical body continues to get beat up, loosing limbs, etc.

The team pursues Orlo and his remaining war golems. They end up outside a volcano where there is a huge sex cult having a ritual. Ian goes in under cover, the usual happens, there are more negotiations with Orlo’s succubus, Shylock returns, chaos ensues.

Shylock kills Orlo with help from everyone, then Alaria pushes a near-dead Shylock into the volcano. Eventually Shylock dies as well. The team returns to Orlo’s lair, intent on returning Alaria’s soul to her physical body. Her mechanical body has been reduced to only a head.

The process appears to fail, and the book ends with Ian getting notification that he no longer has a succubus.
