Sarah Vaughn is an artist, writer, over-thinker. She's penciled Sparkshooter and is currently working with Jonathan Luna on Alex + Ada for Image Comics.
The creeping pace from the previous issue has gone to break-neck speed in this! This, I think and wish, was the issue to have taken all the time with. With Cyrenic awake now, there’s so much ground to cover - what are all the lingering physical affects of being released from the Sleepless oath, the fall out and slow repair (?) between Cyrenic and Poppy, the effects this all has on the political landscape of Harbeny. Slower establishment of what we can expect in the next issue would have been nice. But for better or worse, we got little flashes of all of it and were thrust into the wedding between Poppy and Helder. The lines on the final page leave room to imagine a few different scenarios taking place in the next issue, but with the stars’s fortune for Poppy Iooming over her, I think it’s a safe bet this wedding isn’t going to reach a happy conclusion - at least not without a hitch. But we’ll see!
Artistically, this issue really reminded me of how much I love Leila del Duca as an artist and specifically as the artist for this series. The art is in turns whimsical and decadent in this issue. And this issue really highlights the loving care and attention to detail del Duca puts into her work. I’ve mentioned in a previous review how much I enjoy seeing all the characters have different hairstyles, different hair textures and colors, and different facial features and skin tones. In this issue we get all of that in spades! So much beautiful diversity. And all those clothing embellishments and the luxurious accessories!!! I’d come back for the art alone.
