Earthbound Angels Trilogy by Elizabeth Corrigan

I read and reviewed each of these stories for BigAl’s Books and Pals Book blog after they were released individually. I grabbed some highlights from my reviews to post here for the Trilogy review. I rated each book 5 stars for the uniqueness of the storylines, the descriptive prose, excellent character development, and entertaining dialog.

“Oracle of Philadelphia”
Elizabeth Corrigan did an excellent job developing her characters. She took minor liberties with some myths to make a more entertaining story, however she has tried to keep historical accuracy. I believe she succeeded.
Carrie works at a diner in South Philadelphia, dispensing advice to humans and angels wise enough to seek her counsel. Her story is unique and I could appreciate how she lived her life. Her latest supplicant, Sebastian, sold his soul to a demon in exchange for his sister’s life, but his heart remains pure.
She has two longtime friends who check in with her, the first of these is the demon Bedlam. He truly is chaos in the most fun way and he is not a bad guy.
Through all the years Bedlam, a demon of chaos who is really not a bad guy, has been a true friend to Carrie. Bedlam has done everything in his power to protect Carrie. Her other true friend is the earth-bound angel Gabriel who has stolen her heart, but he seems to love her no more than the rest of mankind. The story is fast moving and highly entertaining with a lot of thought provoking material. It was a fun roller coaster ride through Hell and back, all to save Sebastian’s soul.

“Raising Chaos”
Bedlam was by far my favorite character in “Oracle of Philadelphia” and I was excited to learn that he would have his own book. This story has several plots that weave back and forth in time with some interesting history, new characters, and additional depth added to characters we have met before. Bedlam is in a race against time to find the mythical Spear of Destiny before archdemon Azrael, who claims to know its location. The relic possesses the power to kill Khet, aka Carrie and Cassia, Bedlam’s best friend.
One new character was Siren, the Angel of Truth, who ends up being quite entertaining. Not only does she have to speak the truth, others around her must speak the truth as well. They cannot lie when in her presence. Bedlam's inner dialogue is totally unique as we get to listen to his good side argue with his demon self throughout his tests of worthiness by the Keepers of the Spear of Destiny, it was pure gold.
This is a unique and complex story with depth. The pace is fast and furious with an amazingly surprise ending I didn’t see coming.

“Archangel Errant”
When Heaven is suddenly attacked, all the angels become trapped in their own nightmares. With Michael gone on an angelic mission, Gabriel must rally the remaining seraphim to rouse the sleeping angels and discover who seeks to take the agents of Heaven out of the celestial battle.
This is Gabriel's book. “Archangel Errant” is told through three Points-Of-View, which are clearly marked in the chapter headings: Gabriel, Michael, and Bedlam.
I found it easy to be swept away by the dynamics of the relationships of all the characters involved. The heavenly hierarchy and politics weigh heavily in this story as we are given insight into the past and present. The most surprising part of the whole story is Michael’s trip to earth to assist Cassia. Michael has always viewed Cassia as an evil entity even though she has never chosen to do evil. Their talks are quite revealing.
As always Bedlam is my favorite character. Who doesn’t need a little chaos in their lives to stir things up once in a while?

This is one of my favorite fantasy book series, I am glad to see them all together in an omnibus. Each book review was: **Originally written for "BigAl’s Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy.**

The balance between Heaven and Hell is shifting. Bedlam is a demon, but hates Hell. Gabriel is an angel who has lost faith in his heavenly duties. Carrie is a mortal cursed by Lucifer to live forever. And, unfortunately for Carrie, she has angered a demon who seeks the one thing that can kill an immortal. It’s up to Bedlam to save her, but, in doing so, he upsets the balance between Heaven and Hell, leaving it up to the other angels to either accept him back or find a way to find balance once again.

It would be far easier to write separate reviews, but since I read it one right after the other, I feel I can only really talk about it as a whole. That said, each of the books is great individually. Put together, the story feels a little disjointed. Each book follows it’s own arc that, together, lead up to the final events. When examined closely, it feels awkward with shifting viewpoints from book to book. As a whole, though, it kind of makes sense as the three main characters each have their own book and they’re all working together towards the same ending.

I really love a good angels and demons story. The last one was almost two years ago, and it left me incredibly disappointed. I was a little apprehensive about accepting the author’s request, but I’m very glad I did. This is a great angels and demons story, and I absolutely loved that each angel and demon had individual identities and that the demons weren’t too unlike the angels, especially since they had once been angels. The characterizations were brilliant and well-done, though I definitely wished we could have seen Lucifer a little more.

Carrie, Carrie, Carrie. I loved the angels and demons part. In the first book, I adored Carrie. But it was a quick downhill with her after that. As the title implies, Oracle of Philadelphia is about the oracle, Carrie. It’s her story. And since we started with her, we can’t just abandon her after the first book. No, she plays a key part in Bedlam and Gabriel’s immortal lives, but her stories after the first book are lackluster and disappointing. She is necessary and much of the story hinges on her, but her stories outside of the angels and demons parts just felt like filler.

The one interesting experience I had while reading this trilogy was absolutely loving every word while reading it. I loved the reimaginings of biblical events. They were entertaining, amusing, and made a lot of sense. The author’s retellings fit really well. But, when I came out of the books, I realized most of the story was basically retellings of the bible. The story definitely moved forward, but it felt like at least a half of the trilogy was made up of just biblical retellings. But, like I said, I loved it in the moment. Not so much now that I’ve finished reading. So, I suppose you could say I’m torn.

I absolutely loved how Corrigan conceptualized Heaven and Hell. Gosh, I’d be willing to visit Hell! The way it was developed was fascinating. Heaven wasn’t quite as interesting, but the world building was still very well done, and it was easy to visualize what it looked like. It was also a lot of fun to read about Earth’s evolution through the eyes and designs of the angels and demons. It managed to match well with the Bible while also offering plausible alternative explanations that were thought-provoking.

Overall, this was an interesting trilogy and a satisfactory angels and demons story. It offered intriguing retellings of Biblical stories, though it also felt a little overdone, set against a shift in the balance between Heaven and Hell, though this part felt a little lackluster compared to the rich tapestry of stories the angels and demons told. Unfortunately, it leaves the story set in present times a little incomplete and not quite as interesting as the Biblical history.

Book one Oracle of Philadelphia
As I started reading, the story bops me back and forth to past memories and present time. I loved how the story put Moses and the story of Mary and Joseph into it. The pace is slow as I read along. When the author shows me a character, I saw the past and present, on how how they met. I found characters I liked and characters I didn’t care for. Thought the story was very good. I loved how it played out to the end.
Book two Raising Chaos
I thought the story had a nice pace. Main characters still likable. We follow Bedlam around as he tries to save his friend Khet from getting killed. The story has enough going on to keep my interest.
Book three Archangel Errant
The story bounces me around to the characters the author wants me to follow. Characters are likable and thought the story had a nice steady pace. I was tickled that Gab and Khet finally told their feelings for each other.

I thoroughly enjoyed this serious. Bedlam was historical. Actually they all were at some point or another. However, there were times when I didn’t know who’s POV was talking. It jumped so much that I had to backtrack a bit. There were times I lost interest but once I started reading again it I was hooked again. Well done.

A good read, but you need to be comfortable with religion to read this one.
