Saw the show on Netflix so thought I'd give the book a try. I probably need to read more issues cause I didn't get much from this but still interested enough to find out more.
The first volume of The Umbrella Academy was merely an okay read for me. It had potential, yet it was lacking. The prequel I enjoyed less. I accidentally skipped the second volume before diving into this first part of Hotel Oblivion, so it’s possible that is to blame for the fact I did not enjoy this one.
As it was, I could not tell how anything was linked together. It was too all over the place for me. I know this is just the first part of the story, and things will become clearer as the story progresses, but this was not enough to get me to pick up the rest of this one. Nothing really grabbed me, and there was no desire to find out what happened next.
As I’m super picky with graphic novels, I’m going to conclude this series is not for me. I can understand the appeal, but there isn’t enough for me to be hooked.
Welcome to the hotel oblivion! At first an off handed comment in the first series, now on full display as the place where all the naughty villains of the umbrella academy are taken to be forgotten. An otherworldly waste of a planet that is overlooked by an all powerful being called the scientific man and with only one way televator access, unless you have the code, you may never leave! The hotel is first introduced to us when we go back to the past and watch as Reginald drops off the murder magician for his stay. The entire building is full of villains, each with their own room, and the building is managed autonomously by faceless bellhops. It’s literally oblivion.
In the present day we find that five has taken up contract work, which involves a lot of James Bond-esque car chases and shootouts before a lunch meeting with a potential client. This client happens to be the ousted top board member from the Perseus corporation, here to hire five to find out what is really going on in there. Later on we see five rummaging around their air ducts and trying to talk up the receptionist about their security practices…he will most definitely be back, lol.
We find that spaceboy’s journey has taken him to Tokyo, where he ended up helping a local hero with a villain that uses a giant floating sphere of tv’s to send out energy attacks. Using a vending machine drink with the heroes logo, they are able to temporarily speak each other’s languages in order to communicate. But ever present and following spaceboy is kraken! Spaceboy is actually here looking for Doctor zoo, an old friend of Reginald to help with his current weight issues. Diego is sticking around until spaceboy is done, but then he needs to come back and help the team rebuild. Speaking of the team, seems the only people still at the old academy are Allison and Vanya, and Allison is currently trying to help Vanya through the recover process to be able to walk again…it’s not going well, and their mother actually scolded Allison for not using her powers to allow Vanya to walk again. But I do have to admit I agree with Allison that it can’t be that easy, this is a long and hard process that I believe would be best for Vanya to go through. Back in Tokyo, spaceboy was able to use Doctor Zoo’s machines to get back in shape in a few hours! Then using another hero, named atomic detective, they blasted his face into a way better haircut, lol. It seems the two brothers are also here for another reason, or at least get an unusual chance, as Dr Zoo is in possession of their old team ship…the Minerva. Turns out that Abhijat has been here the entire time, leaving them after not being able to stand being around them after loosing their way. Seems they are a lot better now. But the Minerva is quite a sight, capable of interstellar flight, and with Dr Zoo’s upgrades, it is able to voyage into an unknown portion of the universe called after space. Doctor zoo is looking for answers…so is Luther…let’s work together!
Meanwhile in Wisconsin, a woman missed her bus stop, only to be woken up when the bus screeched to a halt with a dead deer in the road. Her floor manager is gonna kill her for being late, I wonder who this is. As the issue comes to a close we jump back to the hotel oblivion in the preset day. Things are awful here, there is some strange flash on the horizon (not like they are let outside anyway) and murder magician, working with, a man with a camera in his head are trying to finally break free using Reginald’s televator code that he still has stored in his head. But there is a very specific reason they are trying to break out, to get the magician’s baby away from its mother. The big thing they have to worry about is scientific man watching over everything. What a peculiar place.

It's so good to get back into this comic book series, because it never disappoints. One issue of this new cycle, and I'm already hooked and totally intrigued.
The hotel is mysterious and includes a time jump, because there's Hargreeves. And then Five makes an appearance as a gun for hire. Spaceboy and Kraken are in Tokyo doing their own thing and meeting other heroes. While Rumor is helping Vanya learn to walk again.
But under all of this, there's darkness building and new characters making appearances.
I have waited so long for The Umbrella Academy to return. And finally, after 10 years Hotel Oblivion makes its debut! I missed reading about these characters and their (mis) adventures. I was especially looking forward to finding out how The Rumor and the White Violin we’re faring after the events in the previous story arc. I am very much looking forward to next months issue.
Read these as I liked the netflix series and free on kindle unlimited. Not as good as the TV series but you could see where they took bits from the comics and put into the TV series. A bit hard to follow for me doesn't really make sense, but then it's been a while since I read the previous books. A quick read and interesting to see the difference between netflix and book.
I swear, I don't understand this. It's like a drug trip I didn't know I was on. It's like a gonzo movie from the 70s that I'm walking into halfway through. I'm not sure I actually like this series, but I'm a completist, so.
