تاکنون هیچ کتابی با موضوع مطالعات فرهنگی پر خوانندهتر از کتاب «خردهفرهنگ: معنای سبک» (۱۹۷۹) اثر دیک هبیج نبوده است. این کتاب آمیزهای تیزهوشانه و منحصربهفرد از نظریات آلتوسر، گرامشی و نشانهشناسی (از آن نوع که بارت و «مکتب پراگ» مطرح کردهاند) پدید آورد تا دنیای دانشگاهیان و محصلان جوان بریتانیایی، یا هر چیز نزدیک به این دنیا را تحت تأثیر قرار دهد.
از نظر هبیج در تحلیل خردهفرهنگها دو اصطلاح خاص گرامشی شدیدا کاراست: ترکیب یا همآوایی، و خاصّگی. خردهفرهنگها در درگیریهای ارتباطی و نمادینشان با نظامهای بزرگترِ فرهنگ صنعتیِ متأخر شکل میپذیرند. این خردهفرهنگها پیرامون سن یا طبقه سازمان مییابند، هرچند کاملا توسط این معیارها تعیین نمیشوند. خردهفرهنگها در ابداع سبکها تجلی مییابند. این سبکها درون "همآیی" های خاص تاریخی و فرهنگی تولید میشوند؛ لیکن نباید به منزلهی مقاومت صرف علیه سروری (هژمونی) یا به مثابه حل و فصل جادویی تنشهای اجتماعی قرائت شوند – یعنی دقیقا همان کاری که نظریهپردازان متقدمتر فرض کرده بودند. خردهفرهنگها کمابیش سبکها را سرهمبندی (یا تلفیق) میکنند؛ تلفیق میان تصاویر و مصالح فرهنگی قابل دسترس. این تلاش به منظور بنا کردن هویتهایی است که بدانان نوعی «خودمختاری نسبی» خواهد بخشید؛ خودمختاری درون نظامی اجتماعی که جای جای آن به واسطهی طبقهی اجتماعی، تفاوتهای نسلی و غیره دارای شکاف و شکستگی است.
هبیج در اثر اخیر خود (۱۹۸۸) در روشش تجدیدنظر کرد و تصدیق نمود که قدرت فرهنگ تجاری را در تصرف و، در واقع، تولید سبکهای ضد سرورانه دستکم گرفته بود. خردهفرهنگ پانک، به ویژه، آمیزهای خارقالعاده از استراتژی فرهنگی آوانگارد طبقهی کارگر و دغلبازی بازاری بود که در برابر دستیابی محدود جوانان بریتانیا یه بازارهای مصرفی ایجاد شده بود. در واقع ترسیم خطی مابین خردهفرهنگ به مثابه مقاومت و فرهنگ تجارت به عنوان فراهمکنندهی انواع لذت و ابزار سروری بسیار مشکل است – خاصه وقتی پای بازارهای جوانان در میان باشد. به کارگیری روشهای هبیج، به ویژه در مورد خردهفرهنگهای دهۀ ۱۹۹۰، جالب خواهد بود – خردهفرهنگهایی چون گوتها، اسکین هدهای نژادپرست و مهمتر از همه آن گروههایی که در آنها پدیدهی شیفتگی، بازار مناسب و خردهفرهنگها در هم ادغام میشوند (مانند تِرِکیها، شیفتگان فوتبال و عیاشها). و: آیا اکنون شیفتگان فرهنگ والا نوعی خردهفرهنگ را سر هم نمیکنند؟

this is an excellent resource for anyone interested/studying anything culturally related. i found myself using it in multiple classes, both for my own education and my students. i've even picked it up for some heavy personal reading.

A comprehensive sample of essays detailing what cultural studies is as a field of research and why it's so important to the maintenance of the modern world; extremely useful, even if large parts of it feel rather dated.

I read the majority of the passages from this book for a comparative literature course on navigating the city in literature and media this semester. It was an excellent class, and there’s a good selection of pieces from very distinguished scholars featured in this book.

Covers a wide range of topics that are relevant to so called cultural studies. Obviously this is 30 years dated so it’s quaint to read from this 90’s vantage point but things haven’t changed that much so most of the arguments and analysis feel foundational rather than irrelevant.
