Reading this book gave me many eureka moments. This book has helped me forge a road ahead to sharpening my intuition and perception. Chapter 3. “Energy, Power and Chakras”for me is the real gem. This chapter really helps the reader understand energy and flow. How clearing the pathways of our Psychological and spiritual energy is the key to our intuitive growth. Many of the roadblocks we often encounter during our development are discussed and many excellent exercises are given to help us understand and overcome these roadblock. I highly recommend this book!
I found this book helpful and informative in providing an introduction to next level psychic skills and practical exercises to develop them. I really like the author's warm and approachable writing voice and ability to describe metaphysical topics in a down-to-earth way. I recommend this book for those who are keen to gain more confidence in and expand their psychic abilities. Thanks to NetGalley for the review copy. The opinions expressed are my own.
The author is a qualified professional, and she walks you step-by-step through each exercise meant to develop your psychic abilities. The first step is to realize which ability you have. The next step is identifying where it comes from. She discusses exercises meant to develop your psychic abilities. The book then talks about chakras, and why they're important. It's an interesting book, and I'm going to have to try some of the exercises. If you're at all curious about psychics, then you'll enjoy this book.
I love how this book offers a gateway into the next step. This book offers many options and information on what may come after discovering our psychic gifts. There are many books for absolute beginners, but this book helps you to become aware of which directions to go and expresses that what may resonate with one person may not resonate with all. This is good to understand-allows us all to feel like we don't have to have exactly the same gifts as other people, or even the same interests within the intuitive field. Thanks for this book!
Strongly recommend this book to all of my friends and anyone that wants to not only live their best life but help others along the way. All of Melanie's books are not only beneficial to living in the present world but also written in an interesting way.
I received a free eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Every topic – and there's a multitude of them, which is wonderful – is handled very briefly and not very thoroughly. I didn't quite "grasp" any of the techniques and topics handled.
In summary, the book was basically, "this technique exists, I did N with client X and they reacted in Y way, and here's an exercise that may or may not help you grasp the technique". All in all, the techniques weren't really all that well presented, and the reasonings behind the exercises weren't very well explained.
Two out of five stars. I don't even know how to further elaborate on my opinion.
This book is largely about developing natural intuition, with the author alternating between introducing particular skills and then providing practical techniques to develop them. It wasn't as airy-fairy as I'd expected, which I liked, as I prefer a more analytical approach, and the author managed to be both down to earth and direct. I enjoyed this book and will refer back to it again.
Psychic Development: Beyond Beginners is an instructional manual. Not quite what I expected. This is the first book I have read from this author and I enjoyed her writing.
There is certainly a dearth of advanced material in occult publications today. When I initially heard about Psychic Development Beyond Beginners by Melanie Barnum, I had high hopes that this book might be the further guide many of us have been seeking. Unfortunately, upon reading it, I found Ms. Barnum’s book a bit piecemeal and lacking in nuance.
The book does address advanced topics regarding psychic development, such as mediumship, channeling, and extended work with guides. In Psychic Development Beyond Beginners, though, almost every chapter focuses on a different topic, all in a sort of inch-deep mile-wide sort of way.
Arguably, any one of those subjects (mediumship, for example) could fill its own book, either for advanced practitioners or beginners. The attempt here to summarize them in such small spaces does a disservice to their complexity, in my opinion.
If the book were branded as an introductory guide to psychic concepts, perhaps it would be better. It doesn’t work well as a guide for advanced students, however, since it barely scratches the surface of so many things.
It’s true that many of the practices discussed in the book are more suited to advanced practitioners than beginners, but the author doesn’t give the reader enough context to allow them to make that crucial jump.
Chapters (like those on mediumship, group work, and professional practices) only give the bare minimum. It is as if the book is simply saying, “these practices exist” without providing the vast amount of resources that would be necessary for a person to truly work them and advance beyond a beginner level.
This is troublesome to me, not least of all because many of these techniques require a great deal of effort, context, and practice to work at all, let alone work safely. I guess if you want to know what these practices entail in the barest sense, the book covers that, but more detail is required to make anything resembling workable practice.
Perhaps the strangest part of the book would be the discussion of “ego.” Ms. Barnum apparently believes that any “negativity,” “anxiousness” or “anger” stems from an out-of-control ego and cannot be the work of the intuition. This is profoundly silly, particularly in a supposedly-advanced book.
It’s of utmost importance in any sort of psychic work to acknowledge both our own shadow self (which may contain anxiety or anger) as well as negative impressions we might get from other people, places, and things. It isn’t all just the ego - psychic experiences run the gamut of human emotions.
Overall I guess I need to give this book two out of five stars. It just did not strike me as very good or useful, either for beginners or advanced students of the psychic arts.
