The artwork of this series is, as usual, so beautiful and so adorable! The plot is still interesting and I’ve know from the first page I’m going to keep reading it. However, I’m starting to feel like I have to force myself to get through Kensho’s storyline. In the Power of the Dark Crystal series, Kensho was just as complex and varied a character as Thurma as they both struggled to discern where the line between right and wrong was for them. This series, though, Kensho’s perspective is much narrower and he’s just kind of a peace-and-love ultra pacifist. His character now doesn’t seems to retain as much agency in his story and he’s basically the straight man or good cop to Toolah’s wildcard bad cop. I also don’t really get the point of Toolah’s character other than she’s to Kensho in some way what Nita is to Thurma? That being said, I love the growth and development happening in Thurma’s storyline and how we see all the old aspects of her character - the hotheadedness (old habits die hard and whatnot), the inability to look beyond her own personal narrative, etc - but we also see the evidence of how’ her journey through Thra and relationship to Kensho has helped her grow and mature. And the antagonist relationship with Nita is also growing her in so many new ways! I also love that we see new dimensions of Nita in this issue. But again, I’m so disappointed that same can’t be said about Kensho or Toolah yet. Yet, I hope, is the operative word here.
