Dan loves stories, especially tales that weave science, medicine, technology, or history into the fabric of the story. The Singularity Witness and Thirteen Across do that and add locations to the mix as well.
He’s a professional engineer with degrees from Northern Arizona University: a bachelor’s in electrical engineering and masters’ in college education and English with an emphasis in creative writing. His engineering endeavors have provided opportunities to work with a variety of medical and technological applications, and get behind the scenes at research and military sites.
Following The Singularity Witness and Thirteen Across, Dan is working on his next thriller—Thomas Parker and Kate Morgan will be back in The Singularity Transfer. Kate will return in a sequel to Thirteen Across, which has yet to be titled… and we shall see what puzzles and quandaries lay in wait for her.
Kate Morgan is an FBI agent still learning ropes of her trade. When she's chosen by a former lover and fellow FBI Special Agent to work undercover on assignment she has little choice but to go along. Little does she realize how dangerous her chosen trade becomes, but it doesn't take her long to learn when you face powerful organizations it's live-or-die.
ANCRI (Advanced Neurological & Cybernetic Research Institute) is a New Jersey based organization working on ground-breaking techniques. Their main goal: Mind Control. Imagine if a government can control how people think, what they say, what they do, every aspect of their lives. Imagine turning a hardcore terrorist into your ally by controlling what they think. ANCRI is the organization working to provide this to powers that be. But there's a dangerous catch! One that is highly illegal and morally evil.
They need human guinea-pig testing.
When an Oklahoma Senator catches wind of this operation going on under the nose of the US Government, he takes to investigating himself....Then suddenly disappears. FBI Special Agent Jack Wright needs help infiltrating ANCRI, and for this he turns to FBI agent Kate Morgan. She's new in this line of work, intelligent, beautiful, reluctant at first, but goes along with Jack on the basis they keep their relationship professional, and not pursue the mistake she made previously of sleeping together.
The trail leads them to a woman who turns out to be a deadly assassin gone rogue. They face an ambitious partner of hers looking to score millions any which way he can. As they learn ANCRI's intention is to reprogram an enemies' psyche, they have to deal with an unscrupulous FBI Deputy Director who will stomp anyone to climb his way to top of the power grid.
As lives are put in danger and people involved are killed, Kate comes across Thomas Parker, a scientist looking for who stole expensive equipment from his lab, and who is trying to take credit for his part of what ANCRI is doing. Parker and Kate team up when she learns he may help her infiltrate ANCRI, and she believes he is not fully responsible for what ANCRI is up to.... Or is he?
Enter Colonel Randall Wang, a man in US Government Intelligence searching for his missing daughter he believes is being used by ANCRI as a human guinea pig. But how does he know so much and why can't he get more involved, Kate wonders? When Kate discovers the ultimate goal of ANCRI she finds herself between a rock and a hard place. She has her duty, few allies, and more enemies looking to put her out of their misery. Things get tense as she and Parker infiltrate the ANCRI research center as scientists, all the while being under the watchful eyes of those looking to achieve mind-control of all persons on earth.
What I enjoyed most about this fiction-based-on-fact novel is how the author managed to explain complex technology, science, and medicine in an easy-to-understand manner. He blends characters in a realistic way and I could not help wonder if this sort of thing has happened before, or is happening now. 'Singularity Witness' brings readers a fresh new heroine in the name of Kate Morgan. This is a page-turning thriller I highly enjoyed and know you will too. I tip my hat to the author for delivering a topnotch suspense/thriller.
This novel is very well-crafted. There's plenty of intrigue (and conspiracies!), a lot of action, good description, and strong characters. The author has clearly done a lot of research into a vast array of subjects in order to write this novel. The editing was quite good (although there were some homonym mix ups - peddle/pedal, etc).
The political intrigue/spy novel isn't my favourite genre, so it's not really a surprise to me that I didn't connect to this strongly. I think another component was the sheer amount of technobabble - I don't have a background in science (let alone quantum physics) or technology. This book included concepts and terminology that were really foreign to me, so that made it a tough read. While I understood the plot of the book, I also feel that I missed swaths of thematic elements.
It's a strong novel, overall, though, and I would expect someone with a stronger background in the subject matter or a strong preference for this genre would enjoy it a lot. I found the characters to be generally interesting and promising, although I did feel that there was a lack of emotional depth to most of them, which hampered the impact of the book. We get tantalising hints about the characters' histories and backstories, but not enough to really care about them. There were definitely some missed opportunities here - particularly in a couple of parent-child relationships and a prior romantic entanglement. Having said that, this is the first book in a series and I wouldn't expect (or want) all the interesting bits to come out too soon!
This was, on the whole, a solid read and definitely worth a look.
I received a copy of this book through Voracious Readers Only.
A fast-moving thriller with plenty of technology which is believable and not too futuristic in design, strong characters, and plenty of antagonists to fill the storyline and keep the reader engaged.
The storyline is excellently woven. But there was so much technology and scientific terminology that my head Is still spinning. I do not have any background in quantum physics or extensive knowledge of any technological advances to understand any of this language. I still enjoyed the story and made sense of what was happening and the horror of it all if anything like this comes to fruition. God help us all!
Dan Grant is an author who is someone to watch as he climbs to heights as other great authors do with superb writing skills and background to create enjoyable reads. I can see this book becoming the next blockbuster on the big screen. I will be following this talented author for more incredible books.
I found the plot intriguing — Princeton professor Thomas Parker, researching brain mapping and artificial intelligence is deceived into joining a government project involving mind control experiments.on unwitting humans. At the same time, FBI agents Jack Wright and Kate Morgan are investigating the disappearance of a prominent U.S. senator. These storylines merge into a bio-medical thriller reminiscent of Robin Cook.
The characters are well-drawn and relatable. Their underlying feelings and motives are believable. The science propelling the plot is certainly of the moment. My only problem with this nook is the author’s frequent detours into scientific definitions and explanations of the experiments themselves. These are overly long and written in “geek-speak” only a cyber-science/medical student could understand. It shows the author knows his subject, but it distracts from the action and, to be honest, bores the reader. By editing down and simplifying these digressions, it would elevate my review to a higher rating. A writing teacher once told me, “When in doubt, leave it out.” And to quote James Carville, “Keep it simple, Stupid,” (I mean no disrespect, that’s just a direct quote.) I do plan to read more of Mr. Grant’s books as I enjoy his characters and hope this critique is taken as constructive suggestions. I wish him great success.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this book became a movie. It’s a classic sci fi thriller only with great dialogue, and storyline that I actually enjoyed which is pretty uncommon for sci fo novels these days. I really enjoyed the fact that even though it’s a fantasy type novel that the storyline was written in such a way that it was believable and it could actually happen. This could easily have been a very confusing read with all of the different components and threads but the author managed to keep everything straight and easy to follow. It is kind of exciting to know that there is more to come in this series. I will have to keep an eye out and see what else is in store for the characters that Dan Grant has created. I have no doubt that it will exciting and full of adventure.
The Singularity Witness is a compelling thriller in the tradition of Tom Clancy. If you like to delve into a novel laden with complexity and details, a well-researched book with strong characters, then read this one. The story is well-constructed and thoroughly edited. Given the multiple threads and POVs, in a lesser author's hands, it would have been difficult to track both story and speaker. Not so with Mr. Grant. He'll keep you guessing and interested in how the different characters proceed with discovery--especially when the blending of Parker and Kate takes place. Two opposite people coming after--maybe--the same conclusion. Read on to discover what happens!
I really enjoyed this book. There is a lot of medical terms that were way above me but the story is there. Fast paced, good read. Full Disclosure- I was provided a copy of this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review.
I recently received a complementary copy of this book from Voracious Readers in return for an honest review. I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters were well written and the storyline was a definite page turner. I will be looking for more books from this author
