HOW YOU GONNA LEAVE ME HANGING?

But yeah this was a pretty great volume. With Akira finally figuring out what she wants in life things are starting to fall in place. Especially looking back on her running, and what made her feel who she really is. Kondo also gets some good character growth as he comes to terms with his feelings and thoughts. Also my girl Yui finally making her moves while Kyan decides she won't just sit and wait forever for her friend to talk to her again.

Overall this was a really great volume. Maybe the strongest yet. People making choices, focusing on their dreams, and coming to realize their own faults and wants. I love when characters grow, good or bad, because it changes the way you view them or relate to them. This is a pretty great volume and leaves a lot of paths of where everyone can go for the 5th and FINAL volume.

A 4.5 out of 5.

There was a lot of character growth in this volume! Kondo, Akira, & Haruka start to face the music of their deepest wants, & fears.. More of Akira’s family was introduced in this volume which was neat!
There was also more of a focus on Yui in this volume (actually really liked this character).
Yui reminded me a lot of a fashion student from the anime/manga Paradise Kiss!

This is the last one I’m reading from the series, as it hasn’t kept my interest enough to continue buying the manga. It wasn’t a necessarily ‘bad’ series, just didn’t do much for me. I guess it’s just not my cup of tea!
Still was a nice change of pace from my normal reads! I like to switch it up from time to time!

I feel like this entry into the series was much more serious than the others. It also contained some great character development. I feel the reader is finally able to see more of a shift in Tachibana and Kondo's relationship, as well as understand what is really ailing these characters.

Cannot wait to read the conclusion to the series when it comes out later this month!

For me, the relationship between Tachibana and the manager entered into a danger area because I have no clue how this will wrap up. Loved the couple Yoshizawa/Nishida and the cliffhanger.

Having gone through the first four volumes reading the two Omnibuses Vertical have printed I’m in awe of this series. Why? I couldn’t explain it if you gave me a hundred years. There’s something about this manga that has permeated my soul strings. Is it the slow pace? The detailed characterizations? The old school artwork? The story? Or all the above? I haven’t read much shojo with Love Com as the only one I really enjoyed. Other then that it’s been a manga dead zone for me. This one though....Sigh. It’ll be a sad day for me when I finish this series. Akira and Boss will be with me for awhile.

And so, after much mild consternation Kondo ever-so-slowly warms to the notion that being a middle-aged man doesn't necessarily mean everything enjoyable in life is now behind him. For a while, it seems, the man took for granted that one's station in life was predetermined. But as occasional flairs of youth ignite, go out, and reignite, the old man is starting to believe there may yet be time to enjoy himself, regardless of who he is or where he is in life.

AFTER THE RAIN #4 has settled into a familiar groove of acquiescing to the status quo but for one or two virulent emotional tidal waves that tend to knock about one's sense of self. Tachibana, for example, is convinced she's done with the track team, yet she can't help but yearn for the freedom and camaraderie oft associated with those years she spent with Kiyan. Will the girl throw away her running spikes and finally be done with it?

Secondary stories, such as Yui and her intrepid pursuit of the doofus Yoshizawa and the local track star Mizuki Kurata and her jealous pursuit of the semi-retired Tachibana, poke their heads into this volume in earnest. The author has woven a tiny thread of heartbreak and disappointment into each of these stories of hope, but it's up to the readers to discern just how heartbreaking or just how disappointing these dynamics truly are. The corollaries of Yui's circumstance, in particular, could reverberate well into the next volume.

As for Kondo and his vacillation between acknowledging a 17-year-old girl's affection and simply going about his business, AFTER THE RAIN #4 finally gives the man space to breathe. Kondo entreats his fellow author friend, Chihiro Kujo, about keeping creative and living as best one can, while aging, and in doing so opens himself up to the possibility of living without regrets . . . no matter what.

Whether Kondo ever truly acts on this realization will be the manga's ultimate payoff. But at the title's current pace, it won't be Kondo, but Tachibana, who validates this premise. For example, when Tachibana prods her manager as to whether growing old invariably means one cannot partake in new experiences (akin to an old computer with no space for new data), she stares unblinkingly and takes a step closer, daring Kondo to make a move. AFTER THE RAIN #4 is itself a gentle prodding. And whether Kondo realizes it or not, the longer he takes to make a decision, the less the decision is his to make.

The holidays approach as Tachibana continues to pine for her boss, and largely reject the typical high school life she feels she lost when she was injured during a track competition. Her boss, Kondo, realizes he is not immune to Tachibana’s unrelenting attention.

A much more mature & realistic plot, with some deeper thoughts at play. This volume sees the perspective of several people from various stages of life as they play out. Crushes, rebellion, mid life realizations, renewed goals, young heartbreak, and more. Slow paced, slice of life.

Content Notes: implied nudity, physical trauma (a sports injury)

Once I got into this series, it has been challenging to put it down. I want to know where the stories of these characters go even though the underage-girl-meets-middle-aged-man trope is predatory and the nudity in this volume is definitely unnecessary, I am still invested in the outcome. Let's see what happens to all these interconnected individuals after the rain...

One volume to go. This may turn out to be one of the best manga I've ever read. Jun Mayuzuki certainly knows how to tell a story and create believable characters; my final opinion rests on how she finishes the story.

I am really happy I did not give up on this series. Akira's growth really shines through. AND the amount of smiles we got out of her in this one?! Yes please. I am also warming up to Kondo. I didn't care too much for him, but I am starting to like him.

I liked this volume more than the previous because the “romance” was slightly placed on the back burner and Akira’s character development and supporting characters were explored more. It felt light hearted but still engaging, good easy manga to read.

Akira helps her boss throw a birthday party for his son and finishes knitting a scarf for him as a Christmas gift.

This is a very slow-paced, believable, sweet relationship story. I want both Akira and Boss to end up with happy lives. There were some pretty intense moments in this volume with Akira pushing a bit with Kondo and his avoiding her at work because of it. I believe there's only a book or two left in this series and I'll miss it when it's ended.

I like that there is more character development in each of the subcharacters in this round. Keeping relationship feelings a running theme but also the whole avoidance of running track, and maybe that is where I find kinship with my desire to learn more how some friendships that are born from hobbies vs those created from work/childhood/ etc all play with each other. The art style is nice, and the references to different places in Japan are always a nice touch.

Angst, fear, worry, doubt, longing, rejection, and high hopes...

Kondo finally admits to himself that he is attracted to Tachibana. However, this causes him to have an internal crisis, as he still firmly believes he cannot be with her in a romantic relationship. He still feels it would be highly inappropriate, not just because of the age difference, but also because of their work relationship - he's the boss, she's a waitress. This hasn't stopped Tachibana from trying, however. It seems she just continues to become more and more entrenched in the belief that Kondo is the perfect man for her. Meanwhile, it looks like things are falling into place for Kondo's ex-wife to discover that the teenage girl on the train struggling to make a present for her crush, that she gave advice to... is in love with her ex-husband. We all know it's coming. How can it not? Also, things at work have gotten interesting for Yui and Yoshizawa. However, the end of the last chapter of this volume was just heart-breaking. I literally said "Oh, noooooo!" Out loud when I saw it. How awful. Geez. On other fronts, Haruka is determined to get Tachibana back on the track, doing what Tachibana does best - running like the wind. We see several instances of Tachibana longingly looking at the clouds while listening to the wind howl. She's thinking about running. It's in her blood. By the way, is it just me, or is Haruka just the cutest little thing you've ever seen? Oh, she's adorable. Such a cute girl. Those freckles and short hair really give her that girl-next-door aura. Looks like at least ONE other person agrees with me on that! See, what's this? The now-former captain of the soccer team, and the school idol is giving attention to Haruka??? Good for you, girl! Stop doubting yourself. In other news, Yuto hurts himself and ends up in urgent care; Kondo is becoming so stuck on thinking about Tachibana that he develops chronic insomnia - he is struggling hard to get Tachibana off his mind, so he starts avoiding her, making her sad, then angry; Tachibana wants to throw away her track equipment, upsetting her Mother; and Tachibana's aunt shows up unexpectedly and drags her sister and niece off to a hot springs resort! Do you remember the American sit-com "Seinfeld"? It's catchphrase was that it was "The show about nothing". This manga series is exactly like that. It's a simple yet intriguing slice-of-life story that is slowly meandering through the lives of the characters involved. I absolutely love it!

It's weird that Goodreads doesn't let you log re-reads separately. I didn't wanna change my old reviews so I'm using this one for my re-read. With the foreknowledge that this manga never enters creepy territory I'm much more comfortable saying straight up that its excellent.
