Graham Masterton was born in Edinburgh in 1946. His grandfather was Thomas Thorne Baker, the eminent scientist who invented DayGlo and was the first man to transmit news photographs by wireless. After training as a newspaper reporter, Graham went on to edit the new British men's magazine Mayfair, where he encouraged William Burroughs to develop a series of scientific and philosophical articles which eventually became Burroughs' novel The Wild Boys.

At the age of 24, Graham was appointed executive editor of both Penthouse and Penthouse Forum magazines. At this time he started to write a bestselling series of sex 'how-to' books including How To Drive Your Man Wild In Bed which has sold over 3 million copies worldwide. His latest, Wild Sex For New Lovers is published by Penguin Putnam in January, 2001. He is a regular contributor to Cosmopolitan, Men's Health, Woman, Woman's Own and other mass-market self-improvement magazines.

Graham Masterton's debut as a horror author began with The Manitou in 1976, a chilling tale of a Native American medicine man reborn in the present day to exact his revenge on the white man. It became an instant bestseller and was filmed with Tony Curtis, Susan Strasberg, Burgess Meredith, Michael Ansara, Stella Stevens and Ann Sothern.

Altogether Graham has written more than a hundred novels ranging from thrillers (The Sweetman Curve, Ikon) to disaster novels (Plague, Famine) to historical sagas (Rich and Maiden Voyage - both appeared in the New York Times bestseller list). He has published four collections of short stories, Fortnight of Fear, Flights of Fear, Faces of Fear and Feelings of Fear.

He has also written horror novels for children (House of Bones, Hair-Raiser) and has just finished the fifth volume in a very popular series for young adults, Rook, based on the adventures of an idiosyncratic remedial English teacher in a Los Angeles community college who has the facility to see ghosts.

Since then Graham has published more than 35 horror novels, including Charnel House, which was awarded a Special Edgar by Mystery Writers of America; Mirror, which was awarded a Silver Medal by West Coast Review of Books; and Family Portrait, an update of Oscar Wilde's tale, The Picture of Dorian Gray, which was the only non-French winner of the prestigious Prix Julia Verlanger in France.

He and his wife Wiescka live in a Gothic Victorian mansion high above the River Lee in Cork, Ireland.

What hides beneath the well of the Bodine house? Why has the water such a yellow tint and smells of fish? An extremely captivating story you want to read from beginning to end in one session. Well drawn characters and a plot like a movie immediately draw you into this book. You learn the connection between an old local myth and Lovecraft's ancient gods. If you are fond of reading Lovecraft you will love this book. There are many eerie elements but the absolute highlight is when you actually see Chulthe, the beast-god and what he looks like. Absolutely recommended!

Solid Masterton horror novel with all his classic elements: sarcastic narrator, speedy narrative, stock characters, Native mythology, some Lovecraftian cosmic touches, groovy monster mayhem. Maybe 3.5 stars but I’m feeling generous. Recommended!

Something is terribly wrong in the small, peaceful town of New Milford, Connecticut. Something in the drinking water. And it's turning people into giant, homicidal crab creatures who (Slightly Spoilery) worship Lovecraftian Elder Gods that exist in underground waterways. (End Spoiler) It's up to local plumber and our humble narrator Martin, his scientist buddies Dan and Rita, and the local sheriff to try and stop what's happening.

So, a ridiculous(ly awesome) setup from Masterton as usual, and it's pretty fun, though nothing really separates it from the rest of his oeuvre. It's basically a cheesy 80s horror film in book form like most of the work of his that I've read, and I'm cool with that. It does exactly what it sets out to do, and nothing more. It's not really scary, just crazy and over-the-top, as you'd expect.

Masterton is great for when you just want to read a fast-moving horror novel with plenty of gross-outs and cornball humor (which always feels distinctly British even though much of his work takes place in the states). He always cuts straight to the chase, and has no time for philosophy or even fully-realized characters, but I for one almost always enjoy him.

This was my first Masterton book and while I liked the snarky dialogue and the smartass plumber (the main protagonist no less), this was blend of humor and horror that felt like a B movie script. Set in the sleepy town of New Milford, CT, this is part small town horror and part a homage to Lovecraft.

Mason, the plumber, gets a call one day from a family whose well water looks and smells a little off, so he goes to their house and takes a sample for testing; you never know what may be in the water! This time, it is definitely something nasty-- some sort of prehistoric microbes-- that has the lab guy (Dan) puzzled. After trying to call the family with the well to advise them not to drink the water and getting no answer, Mason and Dan pay a visit and find some very strange things...

TWOH has definitely got that 80s horror vibe and was fun to read, but everything fit a little too nicely. The mystery is quickly solved by the plumber and the correct conclusions reached far too quickly. Some decent spooky scenes, but overall, nothing to write home about. 3 water monster stars!

Τελευταία φορά που διάβασα βιβλίο του Γκράχαμ Μάστερτον, ήταν τον Αύγουστο του 2016, τότε που απόλαυσα το πολύ καλό "Τένγκου". Στο μεταξύ, θα μπορούσα να είχα διαβάσει ένα εκ των δυο βιβλίων του που κυκλοφόρησαν από τότε ("Πληγωμένοι άγγελοι" και "Πορφυρή χήρα"), ή κάποιο από τα υπόλοιπα αδιάβαστα που έχω, αλλά δεν έτυχε. Τώρα όμως, είπα μετά από τόσο καιρό να ξαναπιάσω τον Μάστερτον στα χέρια μου, με ένα φρέσκο στα ελληνικά βιβλίο του, το οποίο έγραψε πριν από τριάντα εφτά ολόκληρα χρόνια.

Μια αρχαία και ανίερη δύναμη φαίνεται να ξυπνάει στην μικρή και ήσυχη πόλη Νιου Μίλφορντ του Κονέκτικτατ, μια δύναμη που ζητάει καινούργια θύματα για να ενισχυθεί και να κυριαρχήσει ξανά. Όλα αρχίζουν με την αρρωστημένη κιτρινωπή απόχρωση του νερού σ'ένα σπίτι που τροφοδοτείται από ένα πηγάδι, τον αλλόκοτο θάνατο ενός μικρού παιδιού και την εξαφάνιση των γονιών του, αλλά και με τις φήμες ύπαρξης φολιδωτών... καβουροπλασμάτων. Ένας υδραυλικός -και παράλληλα αφηγητής της ιστορίας-, οι δυο επιστήμονες φίλοι του ονόματι Νταν και Ρίτα, καθώς και ο σερίφης της πόλης, καλούνται να βγάλουν μια άκρη και, τελικά, να αντιμετωπίσουν και να σταματήσουν το απόλυτο Κακό...

Μιλάμε τώρα για ένα μυθιστόρημα τρόμου με τέρατα, που μυρίζει έντονα δεκαετία του '80. Πως είναι οι αντίστοιχες ταινίες της εποχής, με τα τέρατα, τους χοντροκομμένους χαρακτήρες, τις διάφορες τρελές και υπερβολικές καταστάσεις, τις απίθανες σκηνές ωμότητας και σιχαμάρας; Ε, με κάτι τέτοιο έχουμε να κάνουμε. Όμως, όπως πολλές από αυτές τις ταινίες είναι ψυχαγωγικές, έτσι είναι και το βιβλίο: Προσωπικά το ευχαριστήθηκα πολύ. Μου άρεσαν τα σκηνικά, οι κάμποσες σκηνές δράσης, η όλη ένταση της πλοκής, η ολίγον τι σαχλή αίσθηση του χιούμορ, οι γλαφυρές περιγραφές, γενικά αυτή η μπρουτάλ και χοντροκομμένη ατμόσφαιρα βιβλίων τρόμου της δεκαετίας του '80. Επίσης μου άρεσε η όλη σύνδεση με την μυθολογία Κθούλου. Ας πούμε ότι πρόκειται για ένα ψυχαγωγικό παλπ μυθιστόρημα τρόμου, τίποτα λιγότερο και τίποτα περισσότερο.

Υ.Γ. Η μετάφραση μου φάνηκε αρκετά καλή και γλαφυρή, όμως συνάντησα ορισμένα λαθάκια επιμέλειας εδώ και κει, που σίγουρα θα μπορούσαν να λείπουν (τίποτα το τρομερό πάντως). Δεν ενοχλήθηκα από την ύπαρξή τους, απλώς το αναφέρω.

Review of THE WELLS OF HELL by Graham Masterton

I read this novel immediately after reading the author's totally excellent FIRE SPIRIT, so I went from "burning" to "drowning." Both books are superb. Gory, yes; extreme, yes; but such wonderful character development and plotting. THE WELLS OF HELL particularly impressed me with its nods to H.P. Lovecraft, and the weaving in of Lovecraft's Cthulhu and the Elder Gods. Indeed, the author's explication of pre-history, of Atlantis, and the Elder Gods who once ruled Earth, actually makes logical sense--one may or may not choose to believe, but it is all presented in a way that makes the reader ponder, "Well, just maybe that could have happened." So the novel was at once realistic and horrifying. The protagonist, Mason Prentiss, is a gem of a character, as are several of the supporting (I can't say secondary, because they're important too) characters.

Το βιβλίο είναι σαν να διαβάζεις ένα άκρως διασκεδαστικό b-movie. Έχει μέσα τρόμο, αίμα, και χιούμορ. Θεωρώ ότι είναι ένα βιβλίο το οποίο θα αρέσει σε όλους όσους είναι εξοικειωμένοι με τον τρόμο και τα b-movies. Πέρασα πάρα πολύ καλά διαβάζοντάς το. Διαφέρει λίγο από τα υπόλοιπα "κλασικά" βιβλία του Μάστερτον, αλλά δεν απογοητεύει. Επίσης, είναι βασισμένο/επηρεασμένο στην μυθολογία του Λάβκραφτ. Νομίζω δύσκολα θα απογοητευτεί κάποιος που θέλει να διαβάσει ένα πιο "ανάλαφρο" βιβλίο τρόμου.
Ελπίζω να βγούν κι άλλα "ξεχασμένα" βιβλία τρόμου του Μάστερτον.

Η λογοτεχνία του Φανταστικού ποτέ δεν ανήκε στα αγαπημένα μου είδη και έχω διαβάσει λίγα βιβλία με ανάλογες θεματικές. Περισσότερο επιλέγω κάποιο όταν γνωρίζω προσωπικά τον συγγραφέα (αν είναι Έλληνας, δηλαδή), αν πρόκειται για βιβλίο του Stephen King (που απλά τον αγαπώ και θέλω να διαβάζω οτιδήποτε έχει γράψει) ή αν είναι κάποιο μεμονωμένο βιβλίο που με τράβηξε η υπόθεση.
Γνωρίζοντας τον Graham Masterton ως μία από τις αξιολογότερες πένες του είδους του, επέλεξα το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο λόγω όγκου (αν ήταν καμιά 400αριά σελίδες μάλλον θα το απέφευγα) και γιατί το θέμα του μπορώ να πω πως με τράβηξε.

Δεν θέλω να μακρηγορήσω πολύ και να αναλύσω το βιβλίο. Υπάρχουν άλλοι, γνώστες και αναγνώστες, που θα το κάνουν πολύ καλύτερα. Το μόνο που θα πω εγώ, ως ανίδεη της "βαθιάς" Φανταστικής λογοτεχνίας, του κόσμου του Λάβκραφτ και των αρχαίων δοξασιών/τερατοθεών/φανταστικών όντων, είναι πως δεν ένιωσα πως έρχομαι εγώ από έναν άλλον πλανήτη ακριβώς επειδή δεν τα πολυκατέχω όλα αυτά. Οι ήρωες είναι ανθρώπινοι, καθημερινοί άνθρωποι της διπλανής πόρτας και η όλη ατμόσφαιρα θυμίζει την κλασική, μικρή αμερικάνικη πόλη μιας περασμένης δεκαετίας - μοτίβο που συναντώ πολύ συχνά στα βιβλία που διαβάζω και πάντα αγαπώ να βρίσκω μπροστά μου ξανά και ξανά. Θεωρώ πως οι μικρές πόλεις έχουν πολύ περισσότερες και καλύτερες προοπτικές από μια μεγαλούπολη, για παράδειγμα.
Όταν, λοιπόν, και στη συγκεκριμένη μικρή πόλη αρχίζουν να συμβαίνουν παράξενα φαινόμενα και τρομακτικά πλάσματα κάνουν την εμφάνισή τους, η μόνη λύση που έχεις εσύ είναι να αρχίσεις να γυρίζεις τις σελίδες. Δεν μπορώ να πω πως είχε τρελές ανατροπές το βιβλίο, δεν μπορώ να πω πως το τέλος ήταν απρόσμενο ή ιδιαίτερο, όμως η πορεία προς τα εκεί ήταν γρήγορη και αρκετά ενδιαφέρουσα. Και αυτό, τουλάχιστον σε αυτή την περίπτωση, εμένα μου ήταν αρκετό.

Διασκεδαστική μπιμουβίλα φόρος τιμής στον Λαβκραφτ.
Το βιβλίο αρχίζει λίγο αργά, αλλά από τη μέση και μετά είναι ένας διασκεδαστικός χαμός βγαλμένος από ταινίες β διαλογής, έναν πρωταγωνιστή που είναι ταυτόχρονα διανοούμενος και λαϊκό παιδί, καβουρανθρώπους στη Νέα Αγγλία και, φυσικά, ένα άνευρο τέλος αλλά όχι τόσο κακό όσο συνήθως μας δίνει ο Μάστερτον.

Κλασσικός Μάστερτον, εδώ λίγο πιο ανάλαφρος και αστείος από ότι συνηθίζει, χωρίς αυτό να είναι κακό. Η πλοκή ρέει απολαυστικά και οι χαρακτήρες έχουν την πλάκα τους. Χάρηκα επίσης που καταπιάνεται με μια γνωστή μυθολογία. Το μόνο αρνητικό που έχω είναι η απότομη κλιμάκωση στο τέλος, όπου συμβαίνουν τόσα πολλά μαζεμένα σε λίγο χρόνο.

This is a fun early '80s (the copyright is 1979, but I can't find any record of an edition that early)Masterton horror novel. Never let it be said that plumbers don't make good protagonists. It's set in the U.S. but still has a definite U.K. flavor. It's reminiscent of many low-budget productions of the day, and would've made a good B movie. It has a definite Lovecraftian twist and influence, particularly noticeable in the underground scenes. Masterton is primarily remembered for The Manitou, but he wrote some other good stories, too, and I'll add this one to that list.

I waited far too long to re-read this treasure. It has it all: small-town eldritch horror, heroic cats, weird events, skeptical police, brain box scientists and above all, CRAB MONSTERS. Well written and moves right along thanks to the narration by our hero. Great stuff.

After reading Masterton's fantastic Prey, The Wells of Hell is a big letdown. It's like the characters were made out of cardboard: the sexy but smart female scientist; the wisecracking local in love with the sexy but smart female scientist; the town clairvoyent who knows exactly what's going on. The story started off pretty spooky with some tainted well water and strange occurrences at a local farm, but then it got really silly with human crabpeople. Big disappointment.

Ολόκληρη η κριτική στο Smassing Culture

Μία pulp horror ιστορία βγαλμένη από τα 80’s

Για τον Graham Masterton τα έχουμε πει και ξαναπεί στο Smassing Culture. Αποτελεί ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα ονόματα της λογοτεχνίας του τρόμου, με εκδόσεις στην Ελλάδα που ξεκινάνε από την cult σειρά Βιβλιοθήκη του τρόμου στις αρχές των 80’s, μέχρι και σήμερα. Ένα βιβλίο του όμως από το μακρινό 1981, το οποίο παρέμενε ανέκδοτο στα ελληνικά, ξέθαψαν οι εκδόσεις Οξύ και το παρουσιάζουν τώρα, Τα Πηγάδια της Κολάσεως.

Η ιστορία λαμβάνει χώρα στο Νιου Μίλφορντ, ένα μικρό χωριό στο Κονέκτικατ των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών, και ξεκινάει με τον τοπικό υδραυλικό -και αφηγητή της ιστορίας-, Μέισον να πηγαίνει να ελέγξει το περίεργο κιτρινωπό χρώμα του νερού στο σπίτι μιας φιλήσυχης οικογένειας. Οι φίλοι του και επιστήμονες Νταν και Ρίτα, θα αναλάβουν να ερευνήσουν αυτό το περίεργο χρώμα του νερού βρίσκοντας κάτι που μοιάζει επιστημονικά ακατανόητο. Την ίδια ώρα στο σπίτι απ’ όπου συνέλεξαν το νερό, ο Μέισον και ο Νταν βρίσκουν νεκρό τον γιο της οικογένειας με έναν φαινομενικά αδύνατο τρόπο, και τους γονείς απόντες. Τα ευρήματα στο σπίτι φαίνονται αλλόκοσμα και σιγά σιγά κάποιες παλιές φήμες περί ύπαρξης αλλόκοτων καβουρόμορφων πλασμάτων στα πηγάδια του Μίλφορντ, θα έρθουν ξανά στην επιφάνεια και θα ενισχύσουν την πεποίθηση πως πίσω απ’ όλα αυτά κρύβεται ένα ανίερο και πανάρχαιο κακό που έχει ξυπνήσει εκ νέου.

Ο Graham Masterton παρουσιάζει το προαναφερθέν κακό, δανειζόμενος στοιχεία από τον τεράστιο H.P. Lovecraft και τη μυθολογία του Κθούλου και των Μεγάλων Παλαιών. Πιο συγκεκριμένα Τα Πηγάδια της Κολάσεως είναι βασισμένα και επηρεασμένα από ένα διήγημα του H.P. Lovecraft από το μακρινό 1927, Τα Χρώματα από το Διάστημα (εκδόσεις Locus-7, 2006). Ταυτόχρονα, ο Graham Masterton χρησιμοποιεί στην ιστορία του κι άλλους γνωστούς μύθους από την ιστορία διαφόρων λαών, συνθέτοντας ένα μυθικό μωσαϊκό που καταλήγει -αποτίοντας έτσι και φόρο τιμής- στη μυθολογία του H.P. Lovecraft.

Καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του μυθιστορήματος κυριαρχεί μια έντονη b-movie και cult αισθητική με αλλόκοτα τέρατα, υπερβολικές καταστάσεις και ακατέργαστους χαρακτήρες και διαλόγους να παρελαύνουν στο βιβλίο. Φυσικά οι σκηνές τρόμου και φρίκης θα ήταν αδύνατο να λείπουν από μια ιστορία του Graham Masterton, αυτή τη φορά όμως στην ατμόσφαιρα του βιβλίου υπάρχει και διάχυτο χιούμορ να συμπληρώνει.

Είναι γεγονός πως Τα Πηγάδια της Κολάσεως δεν συγκαταλέγονται μέσα στα κορυφαία βιβλία του Graham Masterton, και σίγουρα η γραφή του δεν είναι τόσο ώριμη και μεστή όσο είναι πλέον. Εν κατακλείδι όμως, Τα Πηγάδια της Κολάσεως, ένα διασκεδαστικότατο pulp μυθιστόρημα τρόμου, με έντονη κινηματογραφική γραφή, που ειδικά οι λάτρεις του είδους θα ευχαριστηθούν με το παραπάνω.

Satan, in larval form, is living in a cave under a small New England town after his expulsion from Atlantis. He spends his time coming in the water supply and his ejaculate is turning people into crabs. Good luck finding a plumber who'll deal with that. This is a joyous B-Movie of a book that revels in its ridiculousness, playing on Indian legends and the bible along the way. A bit of lighthearted fluff, for sure, but entertaining and well written fluff all the same.

This is one of Masterton's early horror novels and as far as I'm concerned this author can do no wrong.

Okay, deal with this...A Lovecraftian Old One is asleep in the sub-strata of New England, and, uh...having exciting dreams which are causing him to loose his seed into the local water supply. This causes people to mutate into giant lobsterish monsters with a desire to eviscerate the populace. Who can save us? The local plumber and his friend from the health department! No, seriously, I mean that! If you can imagine this book as a movie, I'm sure you can imagine in on a drive-in movie screen. I know I did.

Absolutely Masterton!

Don't expect a typical creature feature here ... or some standard good v. evil tale. Masterton is the master ... delivering a happily horrific thrill ride ... that made me smile ... that knowing smile ... like a kid at Disneyland.

Κριτική για το Smassing Culture.

Μία pulp horror ιστορία βγαλμένη από τα 80’s

Για τον Graham Masterton τα έχουμε πει και ξαναπεί στο Smassing Culture. Αποτελεί ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα ονόματα της λογοτεχνίας του τρόμου, με εκδόσεις στην Ελλάδα που ξεκινάνε από την cult σειρά Βιβλιοθήκη του τρόμου στις αρχές των 80’s, μέχρι και σήμερα. Ένα βιβλίο του όμως από το μακρινό 1981, ��ο οποίο παρέμενε ανέκδοτο στα ελληνικά, ξέθαψαν οι εκδόσεις Οξύ και το παρουσιάζουν τώρα, Τα Πηγάδια της Κολάσεως.

Η ιστορία λαμβάνει χώρα στο Νιου Μίλφορντ, ένα μικρό χωριό στο Κονέκτικατ των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών, και ξεκινάει με τον τοπικό υδραυλικό -και αφηγητή της ιστορίας-, Μέισον να πηγαίνει να ελέγξει το περίεργο κιτρινωπό χρώμα του νερού στο σπίτι μιας φιλήσυχης οικογένειας. Οι φίλοι του και επιστήμονες Νταν και Ρίτα, θα αναλάβουν να ερευνήσουν αυτό το περίεργο χρώμα του νερού βρίσκοντας κάτι που μοιάζει επιστημονικά ακατανόητο. Την ίδια ώρα στο σπίτι απ’ όπου συνέλεξαν το νερό, ο Μέισον και ο Νταν βρίσκουν νεκρό τον γιο της οικογένειας με έναν φαινομενικά αδύνατο τρόπο, και τους γονείς απόντες. Τα ευρήματα στο σπίτι φαίνονται αλλόκοσμα και σιγά σιγά κάποιες παλιές φήμες περί ύπαρξης αλλόκοτων καβουρόμορφων πλασμάτων στα πηγάδια του Μίλφορντ, θα έρθουν ξανά στην επιφάνεια και θα ενισχύσουν την πεποίθηση πως πίσω απ’ όλα αυτά κρύβεται ένα ανίερο και πανάρχαιο κακό που έχει ξυπνήσει εκ νέου.

Ο Graham Masterton παρουσιάζει το προαναφερθέν κακό, δανειζόμενος στοιχεία από τον τεράστιο H.P. Lovecraft και τη μυθολογία του Κθούλου και των Μεγάλων Παλαιών. Πιο συγκεκριμένα Τα Πηγάδια της Κολάσεως είναι βασισμένα και επηρεασμένα από ένα διήγημα του H.P. Lovecraft από το μακρινό 1927, Τα Χρώματα από το Διάστημα (εκδόσεις Locus-7, 2006). Ταυτόχρονα, ο Graham Masterton χρησιμοποιεί στην ιστορία του κι άλλους γνωστούς μύθους από την ιστορία διαφόρων λαών, συνθέτοντας ένα μυθικό μωσαϊκό που καταλήγει -αποτίοντας έτσι και φόρο τιμής- στη μυθολογία του H.P. Lovecraft.

Καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του μυθιστορήματος κυριαρχεί μια έντονη b-movie και cult αισθητική με αλλόκοτα τέρατα, υπερβολικές καταστάσεις και ακατέργαστους χαρακτήρες και διαλόγους να παρελαύνουν στο βιβλίο. Φυσικά οι σκηνές τρόμου και φρίκης θα ήταν αδύνατο να λείπουν από μια ιστορία του Graham Masterton, αυτή τη φορά όμως στην ατμόσφαιρα του βιβλίου υπάρχει και διάχυτο χιούμορ να συμπληρώνει.

Είναι γεγονός πως Τα Πηγάδια της Κολάσεως δεν συγκαταλέγονται μέσα στα κορυφαία βιβλία του Graham Masterton, και σίγουρα η γραφή του δεν είναι τόσο ώριμη και μεστή όσο είναι πλέον. Εν κατακλείδι όμως, Τα Πηγάδια της Κολάσεως, ένα διασκεδαστικότατο pulp μυθιστόρημα τρόμου, με έντονη κινηματογραφική γραφή, που ειδικά οι λάτρεις του είδους θα ευχαριστηθούν με το παραπάνω.

Crab people, crab people, taste like crab, talk like people. It's all quiet and quaint in the small Connecticut town until the water in one of the wells turns yellow with microscopic creatures emitting an enzyme that begins turning people into giant crabs. Mason the smartass plumber along with Shelley the scene-stealing cat (he survives unscathed, of course) and Dan the resident scientist begin to figure out what's happening, while an elder god slumbers uneasily deep beneath the town, waiting for his new reign of glory.

It's clearly a mishmash of Lovecraftian tropes, with elements from The Colour Out of Space (something taints the well and a family comes to a cruel end) and anything to do with Cthulhu (everything fishy), but surprisingly, it all works. Another clear influence comes from old 50s monster movies, with smalltown cops chasing alien monsters. Some of these references are, of course, also referred to by the characters, who are all written as smart and logical characters who easily transcend the usual genre fodder.

The plot is mostly serious stuff, but Masterton has his tongue firmly in cheek, bringing in healthy heaps of humour especially through Mason, who is an easygoing slacker and easy to sympathize with as he pragmatically navigates the new, crazy situation. To Masterton's credit, even Mason's romantic subplot is not exactly as one would expect in genre fiction, with the writer throwing a sudden spanner in the works the moment things begin to escalate.

The Wells of Hell might feel a little too conscious of itself, skirting the border between horror and parody. But Masterton's skills as a writer shine through, with the horror elements being true to the genre and the humour feeling effortless and natural. Horror fiction often feels nasty for the sake of nastiness, but there's no sign of anything like that here. If anything, The Wells of Hell is a distinctly nice, quick-paced novel with smart characters engaged in an honestly pulpy adventure.

Graham Masterton’s The Wells of Hell is exactly what you'd expect from one of his early works—wild, gory, and gloriously over the top. The plot revolves around a sleepy English town plagued by mysterious disappearances and bizarre subterranean horrors, and it doesn’t take long before things go full creature-feature chaos. It’s very much an homage to classic B-movie horror—think gooey monsters, ancient evils, and a whole lot of screaming.

That said, this book feels like early Masterton in every sense: the jokes are groan-worthy at best, tact is nowhere to be found in supposedly “serious” moments, and the characters often act like they’ve wandered in from a 70s pulp magazine. The writing can be clunky, and some of the dialogue has aged like milk.

But hey—it’s still Masterton. There’s a certain charm in the madness, and the story zips along at a breakneck pace. The gore flows freely, the tension never lets up for long, and there’s an undeniable energy to the whole thing. The Wells of Hell may be rough around the edges, but it’s a bloody good time and a fascinating glimpse at the chaotic beginnings of an author who would go on to sharpen his horror instincts in far more polished works.

Still fun, still crazy, still very much Masterton. Just... with extra cheese.

No estamos ante el mejor Masterton de los 70, pero The Wells of Hell es entretenido, escueto y va a toda hostia. Nos encontramos aquí con uno de los homenajes más claros del autor escocés a H.P. Lovecraft, con un émulo de Cthulhu amenazando con despertar en unas cuevas subterráneas bajo Connecticut, en las que una filtración de agua contaminada con su semilla convierte a gente normal en crustáceos asesinos con muy mala hostia. Un fontanero local y sus amigos se encargan de deshacer el entuerto y por el camino hay menos gore del esperado (aunque al final vemos cosas fuertecitas marca de la casa), una trama romántica que no va a ningún lado (cosa admitida por el mismo protagonista) y retazos de monster movie cincuentera con un sheriff solucionando la papeleta a base de arma antitanque. Y aún hay alguna referencia a "Quatermass and The Pit". Para mi, más que suficiente.

Woda czerpana ze studni państwa Bodine przybrała dziwny, żółtawy kolor. Wezwany na miejsce hydraulik, Mason Perkins, nie widzi żadnych nieprawidłowości w instalacji, ale na wszelki wypadek pobiera próbkę wody i zawozi ją do laboratorium. W badaniu mikroskopowym w próbce zostają stwierdzone niezidentyfikowane małe organizmy, niepokojąco przypominające małe potworki. Kiedy Mason udaje się aby ostrzec rodzinę przed piciem skażonej wody, odkrywa na miejscu prawdziwą tragedię – nie żyje syn Bodine'ów, a dorośli zaginęli. A w wannie ich domu leży obrzydliwa, ogromna muszla, przypominająca kraba…

Doceniam klaustrofobiczny klimat, ale mnie od dziecka przerażają wszelkie studnie i ciasne korytarze, więc byłam łatwym celem :) Tym razem będzie bardziej mackowato i pradawnie, do tego dość obrzydliwie (chyba, że kogoś obślizgłe macki nie obrzydzają, to wtedy nie).

A plumber with a feline buddy helps uncover the cause of an illness turning small-town Connecticut neighbors into crab people. Apparently local flooding has forced to the surface ancient Atlantean jizz.
