On October 3, 2006, a skinny black and white dog walked up to a shed in the middle of nowhere and decided to befriend a broken man. In the dozen years since, they’ve built an off-grid house together, walked more than 20,000 miles, and survived blizzards, rattlesnakes, and bears. They’ve published some two dozen books of fiction, short stories, non-fiction, and photographs.. At last, Angelo the Border Collie has a chance to tell his own story. In a memoir that is forthright and intelligent, spiced with a bit of humor, he tells of his life before and after he met The Man and Maggie the Black Labrador. This concise memoir includes fifty pages of spectacular photographs of Angelo and his companions in Colorado’s largest alpine valley.
Leland lives in an off-grid house that he built himself, with the help of neighbors from time to time. Angelo supervised the whole thing. Now he's pursuing another lifelong dream: Being a published author.
Seven Dogs in Heaven, Jimmy Mender and His Miracle Dog, and Angelo's Journey have been enjoyed on all seven continents (yes, if you check the library at McMurdo Station on Antarctica, you'll find them there!).
His other offerings include short stories, poetry, and even a sort of journal in three volumes about building his house in the middle of nowhere.
What a wise, lovely memoir. I really enjoyed this dog’s-eye view at the piece of Colorado that Leland Dirks and his pack call home. The descriptions of the flora, fauna, and landscape—and the beautiful photos—add a nice layer that made me feel like I was walking along with Angelo. Highly recommended if you love dogs and their stories.
This is a true memoir of Leland and Angelo as to their many journeys through life. There are also many beautiful photographs Leland has shared. It begins back in October 2006 when a skinny black and white dog walks up to a shed and befriends a broken man. This is a delightful story which has an unusual event about Angelo. The good news is that this story of Angelo is not over ... he's still walking the trails with his partner, Leland. This story is a treasure, and I've also ordered the paperback version. It can also make a wonderful gift to those who love dogs. Highly recommend.
“My Name Is Angelo” is a wonderful story told by the Dog, Angelo. What adventures he has with his “Man” and other animal friends. It was a fun read with great photos. Angelo’s telling of his life so far brought me joy and happiness. This is a happy story; and just as his fellow “Man” author promised, Angelo did not die at the end. It was so refreshing to read about this Dog and his “Man” without the worry of a sad ending. I have lived through the loss of 3 beloved Dogs and have no desire to relive that sadness by reading about it. I want to remember the joy and happiness my dogs gave me and this book does that!
Angelo and Leland shared a wonderful life together and this book tells a portion of it. It's written from Angelo's point of view; wholly appropriate given their close friendship. Anyone who has had the privilege of living with a border collie will enjoy this work, finding themselves nodding their head, thinking "Yep. That's exactly how a BC would view things."
