I like to rate parts of a series, especially manga volumes, relative to the rest of that series, so keep this with a grain of salt.
That being said, Hunter x Hunter is a 10/10 manga.
This is not the peak of peak, but it's still peak. Togashi is absolutely SIZZLING with the political intrigue of this plot. Everytime we switch perspectives, I groan because I want to be hearing what happens next. Every. Time. Kurapika, Tserridnich, Chrollo, Hisoka, and Morena slowly converging on one another in a cold war-esque time bomb has me biting my nails with each subsequent chapter. I cannot be normal NOR WILL I REFUSE TO BE NORMAL ABOUT THIS ARC.
The only reason it isn't 5 stars is because this isn't even the best HxH has given us. But, since I'm not going to review every single volume right now, let me give you my ranking of the HxH arcs thusfar.
- Hunter Exam: 3.5/5 . Fun, great by other manga's standards for an intro arc, but just fun otherwise.
- Killua's Family Arc: 3/5 . Probably the worst of HxH to me. It's not bad, but the conclusion of the arc feels a little unsatisfying by itself. This is where we get introduced to some of this verse's horror elements, which is one of my favourite parts of the series altogether. But, it just doesn't feel too satisfying to me. We need to find Killua. There he is. We need to open the doors. We did it. We need to get to the house. Okay, all done. There are very few twists in this part of the story, and I never really bought the others' commitment to Killua as a friend (besides Gon, of course). They generally don't have as much to do besides opening a door. Gon does literally everything else. This arc honestly just serves as a prelude to Heaven's Arena and later Yorknew with Killua's parents, but by itself, it kind of falls flat for me.
- Heaven's Arena: 3.5/5 Higher peaks. Nen as a system finally gets introduced and quickly becomes my favourite magic system in any piece of media, besides maybe Avatar.
- Yorknew: 4.75/5 . Holy moly. Everything. Just, everything. The spider's show up and do NOT disappoint. Titans clash when we've only seen beginners squabble up to this point. The world becomes so much bigger. JUST THAT CLOCK SCENE ALONE. HE BROUGHT A SHOVEL.
- Greed Island: 3.75/5. Yeah, the system is convoluted and a little dry. BUT HOLY HECK SOME OF THE FIGHTS HERE. Razor's dodgeball game had me flipping out. Genthru is by far the worst villain in the series, but his fight with Gon served the narrative in a surprisingly effective way. You can just tell that Togashi loves video games with the little exploits he writes as well. Bisky was great, the card system is used creatively. The arc kind of gets better the more you think about it. When people say it's the worst arc in the series I kind of get baffled about it. Nothing in the Hunter's exam comes close to the peaks of Greed Island. OSU!
- Chimera Ant: 5/5 . Bro you already knew this. It's long, yeah. Ikalgo's segments are a lot less entertaining. Even STILL. EVEN. STILL. This is one of the best arcs put to manga. Like, ever. You already know all the reasons why. I'm not going to get into all of it, but my favourite part might just be the royal guards and their arcs, as well as how each of them is loyal to a different version of the "king". Super interesting stuff. That and all the political commentary about a certain real-life dictatorship that I won't talk about more at risk of being put on a list. Absolutely wonderful. Probably my favourite arc of any manga that I've read.
- Chairman Election Arc: 4/5. Really nice victory lap for the series with some delicious political intrigue as the icing on top. I'm glad that the events of the Chimera Ant arc aren't just waved away as another adventure, and even if the tone doesn't carry its sense of tragedy, that almost feels more realistic to the world itself. The events of the Chimera Ant arc kind of loom over everybody as this weird, nightmarish haze. I like that. It makes going back to certain parts of this series, like Hisoka, Illumi, and the search for Ging, refreshing, yet clouded by this sense of unease. But even besides the events of the preceding arc, the Chairman Election arc stands quite firmly as a last bow for Gon and Killua's story, at least for now. Togashi flexes his political drama skills, which later go on to be a focal point in the Succession War arc, with Pariston and Ging's mental feud really standing out as the highlight of this story, besides maybe Killua's dynamic with Alluka (their reconciling scene always makes me tear up). Overall, a really great time that feels earned at this point in the story.
- Black Whale Preparation Arc (?): 3.5/5. Nothing much to note here besides a good and necessary transitional segment of the story leading into our next major arc. Fun times, but nothing to write home about. Wait, there's something else here in the fine print...what does that say? The greatest fight recorded in Shonen history??? That can't be right...
- Chrollo vs Hisoka: 5/5. YES, IT DESERVES ITS OWN SECTION. I DO *NOT* CARE IF IT TECHNICALLY IS NOT AN ARC, I HAVE READ THIS FIGHT SO MANY TIMES OVER THAT IT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED ONE AT THIS POINT. THE ACTION, THE LAYERING OF STRATEGIES THAT MAKE YOUR HEAD SPIN, THE ART, THE GLORIOUS CONCLUSIONS AND SET UPS FOR FUTURE CONFLICTS, CHROLLO VS HISOKA WAS EVERYTHING TOGASHI COULD HAVE GIVEN US AND MORE. "Thank you, Togashi", we all say in unison. I might just go review that volume after this. This is seriously the best HxH or any action manga has to offer in the fight choreography department, and reading this with a reddit page explaining each move felt like I was reading a dissertation on how to make punches cooler.
- Succession War Arc: (4.75/5). This is still ongoing, but if what we've read thus far is anything to go off of, I think the Succession War Arc may just go down as another legendary segment on the level of the Chimera Ant Arc and Yorknew. The political intrigue goes from a rich little treat in the Chairman Election arc to OODLES of creativity dripping off of each interaction. A chess game in slow motion where each piece removed results in nail-biting tension between so many moving parts. I needed to watch so many videos just to remember the names of all the princes, but then you introduce the mafias, just Morena (I love Morena), the Troupe, the Troupe's ORIGIN, Kurapika, Melody, some random assassin that hasn't been mentioned in like, 30 chapters, Hisoka being a walking time bomb that everyone is trying to delay, all the nen beasts, incredibly rich commentary on classism and corruption (which you know I ABSOLUTELY EAT). Reading this week-to-week will go down as one of my favourite reading experiences to date. My grandchildren will ask about the theories we had on Prince Woble's nen beast, or comparing the noses of the queens to their children. This arc kind of cemented HxH as a true masterpiece in my eyes. Togashi's range of subject and tone is second to none, and I pray that he lives to be healthy and finish the story he wants to tell. Absolutely spectacular...maybe tone down the word count though.
...my bad, guys. Hyperfocus goes crazy. This series is just really special to me. I might re-read the manga start to finish and update my thoughts on each volume. We'll see. Sebastian out. I need some water.
