Rate this book

Untimely death is part of everyday life in the quirky English village of Upper Goosing – European Murder Destination of the Year 2015. What will South East England’s greatest detective uncover? Is her ladyship a murderess? Was the killer a comedy rival? Or are darker forces at work in this particular corner of Brokenshire? Join our self-proclaimed British detective genius, as he races against time to solve this very funny murder mystery – so he can play golf at the weekend!

The first novel in the ‘Clinton Trump Detective Genius’ series

This riotous English detective spoof is murderously good fun from first page to last, as Inspector Trump and his unwanted sidekick, Constable Dinkel, encounter a procession of crazy comedy characters in the Great British countryside. Stuffed solid with British humour (or ‘humor’, if you’re one of the many American tourists who visit Upper Goosing), its mix of black comedy, British farce, funny one-liners and downright silliness is guaranteed to generate tremendous titters across the very civilised world.

More amateur sleuth than professional investigator, Clinton Trump will bring a smile to your face like no other Trump has before, or probably ever will. So, jump aboard the Trump detection train, blow your Clinton trumpet and join the movement – Make Murder-Mystery Great Again!

A Word from Detective Inspector Clinton Trump:

“Greetings from Upper Goosing – the murder capital of Europe. You’ll find the scenery, tea rooms and cake shops are well worth the risk of a premature, grisly death. But before purchasing this novel, please note that it only employs British English, as spoken by Her Majesty the Queen. I don’t want anyone griping about me saying ‘per cent’ instead of ‘percent’, ‘metre’ instead of ‘meter’ or ‘tea’ instead of ‘coffee’. If you must grumble, please do as the English do and complain only to yourself. And if you’re planning on enjoying a cup of Earl Grey with this quality e-book, please remember: it’s tea first, milk second. Finally, don’t be afraid to laugh thunderously when reading this novel. Just don’t laugh yourself to death – we have enough fatalities around here as it is. Thank you.”

When I started this book I didn't think I was going to like it. I don't give up easy so plowed on and very soon I saw the comedy and enjoyed this book. It is a English Mystery with a Clinton Bush Trump as the main character. I don't often laugh out loud but I did with this book. Mr. Trump is an Inspector with the police of a small town but in the elite area. When you read the book you see all the traits and mannerism of the man in the WH house. He even manages to work in the bone spurs. This writer caught him so perfectly and this make believe world was perfect for the character. This was a perfect book for the times. Need to have a good laugh read this book.

A Very Funny Book

You can easily read this short comedy in an evening.
But you shouldn’t do that. Take your time. If you read too quickly, you could miss a large portion of the jokes, one-liners, puns, absurdities, double entendres, non sequiturs, etc., that populate every paragraph and nearly every sentence of the book, often cascading over one another. Author Mathews has used nearly every device in the joke book to create this comic tour de farce. Actually, a joke book does play a bit part in the story.
The tale is set in Upper Goosing, Brokenshire, England. The case involves murder by mango chutney and the effort of Clinton Trump, self-proclaimed Greatest Detective in South East England, to solve the crime in time for Saturday’s big golf tournament. The villagers of Upper Goosing are a harmless assortment of odd, quirky, and batty characters. Also featured are two cats, Clouseau and Colombo.
Don’t let the detective’s name put you off, by the way. This Trump is comically narcissistic, highly susceptible to flattery, and sports bouffant hair, but is otherwise nothing like the other Trump. Detective Inspector Trump is a comic character, inept, fatuous, bumbling, and very likable. The book is pure British farce with no political or social commentary.
Mathews is a very good writer. After reading his “We Have Lost . . .” books, I would have described him as a humorist with a quick wit and an ear for the absurd. With “A Very Funny Murder Mystery,” he has ratcheted up his slapstick comic skills several notches.
I gave the book five stars for what it is – a few pleasant hours of relaxation with smiles, silliness, and more than one out-loud chuckle. This will be a series, if anyone but me buys the book, and I look forward to the next installment.

A Peculiar Murder

Always love finding new authors and this was certainly worth my checking in to.

I love humor and a mystery. What Paul has given us is a whimsical story that left me giggling in so many of the chapters.

I can’t wait to follow our good detective on his pursuits for justice!

Wasn't worth the time

I got the book and started read, knowing it was a spoof and tongue in cheek. Turns out it was labored, unfunny, annoying , and far too long. I'd hoped to find a new series to enjoy. Instead,I found one to avoid.

This one of the most irreverent books that I’ve enjoyed reading in a long time! Detective Clinton Trump made me laugh out loud several times as did Psychic Madam Pootin!

Lighthearted and silly but a fun read

This is a very good spoof of mysteries. I could imagine a film with the Monty Python team. Even the really bad scenes had me chuckling.

Fast paced beginning 1/3. Then bogs down for a 2nd third run on sentence. Stick with it to the predictable, yet clever ending.

Detective Inspector Clinton Bush Trump is the self proclaimed greatest detective in South East England. This mystery, like everything else in his life, revolves around his belief in his genius.
Like many a sketch on Saturday Night Live, this starts from a very funny premise and beats that idea for about twice as long as it should. This could have been an excellent short story or novella. But, instead t becomes repetitive and eventually gets almost boring.

An amusing story

If this particular police force had a brain cell between them it would be very lonely, all the the same it was a funny light hearted story worth reading of you fancy something not too serious. Wouldn't say it's funny but it was an amusing light hearted take of murder.

Kinda Cute

The plot was good & interesting. I liked all the characters.
The dialog STUNK!!!!!! I understand its supposed to be a spoof & silly, but we readers get the joke. The puns were tolerable, but once again needn't be explained. I was disappointed in this book.

Mildly amusing one joke mystery. Some witty puns and satire thrown in, but mostly one joke - the inspector. Not bad for pure escapism.

This is a book that got better as it went on. I am glad I finished it. I am sort of rounding up to a 4 for this. You need to love farce for this but it is interesting.
