Two years ago, Miranda Cosgrove’s sister went missing. It is the only case she hasn’t been able to solve. So when a case involving a missing witch--one wrongfully accused of murder--she’ll be damned before another, powerful young woman is lost on her watch. The fact of striking similarities between her sister’s case and Hettie Smith’s is quite beside the point. But she knows now she cannot do it alone. After reuniting with her scholarly and pillar of the Ouroboros Society Charles Weatherby, they are soon joined by the secretive Dr. Christopher Threadneedle and resourceful Mr. Thomas Elliott. Together they venture to Salem, Massachusetts--hotbed of witchcraft and betrayal. Contending with more than they’d bargained for won’t slow Miranda down for a single moment. Discovering the truth, however...that could prove the greater challenge.
If you want a plot summary, read one of the other reviews. This author (authors?) is really an expert at creating personalities in a novella format which is really hard while still having a lot of story action. I absolutely loved the characterization and I am ready to join any of these people on an adventure. There is a nice mystery and lots of action and still plenty of room for these characters to grow....they already have a lot of interesting back stories. I am on my way to book 2.
I really, really enjoyed this short read. It is a little bit Penny Dreadful, little bit the mind of Sherlock. I'm already, in such a short time, eager to learn more about the background of the characters and their "uniqueness." Definitely one of the better stories I've read this year.
