Rate this book
Jerusalem, 76 B.C. For the first time in history, a woman rightfully reigns over Israel. Between the Testaments

In a blurb in the Gospel there is mention of an elderly woman named Anna who lived in the temple who waited the promised Messiah. As a young girl she may have lived during the reign of Queen Salome Alexandra. I hadn't heard of her until I read this book which I found to be quite interesting. This story tells of Anna's younger years and the politics of the time. It sounded like Queen Salome was a godly woman who encouraged education for other women. At least she did for Anna.

True Devotion!! To Self an Her God!

Anna always felt Gods love for her from a small child , what a love story. Not only for her heart but her soul too, The Lord knows are desires an if we are faithful he will grant that wish. For Anna it was a older ,wiser ,unselfish man Celeb , I really enjoyed there story ,but the heartfelt struggle she went thru with family ,her Queen , Men who wanted her draws you in . What will she do!! Very well written I felt like I was back in time. Read both historical books from Stokley , You Will Fall In Love With All the Characters!!!

Loved this story! It's elicits so many emotions: love, hate, joy, anger, fear, and more. I hope there will be a sequel to see Anna grow and become the woman who eventually met the Messiah as an infant.

If you expect the Anna of the Bible you'll be disappointed

Not sure I'd actually label this book Biblical historical fiction. It has some be before each be part of the book, but I was expecting this to be about Anna the prophetess from the Bible. Maybe this is about her early years but it doesn't mention her meeting Jesus in the temple at all. It's a nice story, but I also found some editing needed to be some, lines are repeated.
Lines other thing that bothered me was the are some that wouldn't take place in that day and are, more like our time period. I understand authors don't use exact language from that time for the readers benefit, but there was one that really got to me, page 259 they are taking about getting for our one of the prince's and Ari says, "Take him to Egypt. Take him to the moon. Just get him out of Jerusalem..." A little rhyme there but that sounds more like something said in or century then in 76 B.C.
I've read books by this author before and enjoyed then. This one was just mediocre for me.

This is a new to me author that I will be reading more of in the future. Anna the Prophetess was only mentioned one time in the Bible. I think it is awesome how Kim Stokely wove a story around her. Ms. Stokely has certainly researched the time of Christ and included many local customs. I enjoy her writing style and she created a very interesting tale. the only thing that would have improved the story for me is if she had continued the story to the scene with Jesus. Other than that this was an awesome book! I read this on Kindle Unlimited. So grab yourself a cup of tea and settle in for a fantastic read.

I didn't think Kim Stokely could possibly create a historical novel as riveting as her earlier book, Woman of Flames. I was wrong.
"In the Shadow of the Queen" brought ancient Jerusalem and its inhabitants to life. The author revealed the heart and soul of her characters with intricacy and complexity, bringing them to life. I became immersed in the life of her lead character, Anna. I felt that I was sharing her fears and struggles. This novel is absolutely compelling, and I stayed up all night reading it. Francine Rivers fans would love this book.

Good book, talented writer!

I enjoyed this novel and appreciated the attention to detail concerning what life would have been like in Israel during this historical setting. I was personally put off a bit by the many descriptions of one of the main character’s lustful thoughts and actions. On the one hand, this is central to the plot and there are no graphic scenes at all, don’t misunderstand. On the other hand, I felt that the tension of various moments could have been conveyed without going into as much detail. Overall, however, this was a good read!

Queen Salome Alexandra has come to power in Judah before the birth of Christ. Anna is a young girl very gifted as an embroider who comes to the queen's attention What transpires is the friendship between Anna & her queen as well as the intrigue that takes place between her son's & those at court. Anna is one of the people Mary & Joseph meet at the temple 8 days after the birth of Jesus though the story doesn't go that far. I coukdn't put this book down!

Awesome story

With subtle twists and excellent characters, the reader is drawn into a story of love between two people that seem mismatched. But the love of GOD is seen on Anna's life as she trusts in GOD when circumstances change again and again. The story from the author brings to life the three verses in Luke where Anna is mentioned. May someone who does not know personally the love of GOD be inclined to search for Him after reading this!

Loved it.

I'd rather read books about women in the Bible, than the Bible itself. These kinds of books are easier to understand and the fiction part draws you in. This is the second book I have read by this author and that's why I chose it. The first one was about the prophet Deborah. I couldn't stop reading this one, Anna's character drew me in. Never heard of her, but now I will be looking her up in my bible from the information from this awesome read. Thank you Kim.

This is the first book I have read from this author. It definitely won’t be the last… Actually, I downloaded the only other book I found by her, immediately!
She has a wonderful style to her writing. I was immediately drawn into the story of Anna. It did not take very long for me to relate to all the characters. This to me is very important, and let me know if the book will be a page turner. And it was!

Another wonderful read from Kim Stokely

I loved reading the books about the seasons of Marigold manor, although I identified with Edith, who was a year younger than me. Reading Bible novels are my passion, so In the Shadow of the Queen was wonderful! I loved that Anna had a sensing from the Holy Spirit that Adonai was preparing something even better than the blood sacrifice of a lamb...His only lamb! Thank you!

Fantastic Story

After a spell of finding myself unable to get into any book I picked up, I tried this one and loved it. The writing is great and the story stays consistent with no "boring spots." I also appreciate that the author is able to publish clean books, without removing all reality from them. I hope she writes many more - I will buy each one!

Captivating story of faith

A wonderfully woven story of hope, promise, faith & a young woman's relationship with Adonai. Anna, a shy girl brought up in the tradition of Jewish law & custom, grows through the unexpected opportunities given her by the queen of Israel. A lesson of how God is always faithful & will use all situations for His & our good.

This book is beautifully written. There is a great sense of knowing the characters, yet they constantly surprise you. The descriptions of the time and place are easily visualized due to the authors excellent word choices. This book has tension, intrigue, intimacy and heart warming characters and scenes. An excellent read.

This was an interesting book, but it seemed to be slow in places. It was written using several real life characters. I looked them up and found them to be real. I like that in a book. It gives the story authenticity. This story seemed to follow history but was written in a way that made it interesting for the reader. There was a twist at the end that was unexpected. All told, it was a good story.

Captivating Read

The characters were real and the challenges human. While remaining true to the time period, Kim Stokely spoke word of courage, faith and love in a story full of action and passion for God.

I love Historical Fiction

I’ve read several books on this time period and this one was very good. I like how the author intertwined scarcely mentioned people and historical figures’ stories to such a satisfying end.

Loved this story

So well written and enjoyed the characters. I shall continue to read this author. Feel confident in her interpretation of these events, although they are quite sketchy in the bible.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it is a perfect blend of journal entries/story telling that endear me to historical fiction. It is a growing up story, during a very difficult time in English history, and absolutely charming in every way.

Well-written story set prior to Jesus' birth and showing the machinations of the political context well. Loved Caleb and loved that the character did not marry a physically perfect or gorgeous man. Hoping for a sequel.

This was a good story, but at times it moved pretty slowly for my taste. Seemed like it took ages for me to finish it.

I loved the Old Testament basis, the love story, and the talent of the seamstress. The politics were ok to a point. But they weren't my fave.
