At twenty years old, Lainey Wilson has made enough mistakes for a lifetime. She’s gotten herself knocked up by a cruel, uncaring man, lost her home, and found herself outside of a ramshackle bar with a crying baby and a broken purse.  When Nick Jackson, the Mustangs' new rookie quarterback, swoops in like her savior, all she wants to do is fall into his arms. There’s just one problem... she’s sworn off football players and men for good.  He’s charming, eager, and sexy as hell, but Nick’s not the man for her. No matter what her body says.  Besides, she’s got bigger problems to fix such as how she’s going to feed her child, where she’s going to lay her head, and how to stay hidden from her ex. There’s no room for flirtation, a hand on the small of her back, or even the way he makes her daughter smile. Nick Jackson isn’t in her plan now or ever.  Right?

Be Mine is book two in the Jackson Boys series by Jen Frederick. This was my very first book by this author.

When we start out, Lainey Valdez is twenty years old and has a two year old daughter, Cassie. When Lainey was only sixteen years old she was swept off her feet by Chip, a local guy who had just gotten into the NFL. He got her pregnant and then dumped her, literally treated her like trash. Lainey’s own mother is embarrassed by her and pretty much kicks her out. Even though no one knows Chip is the father, he is forced to take Lainey and her daughter to Dallas where his team is, so she can start fresh. It’s here that Lainey meets the new rookie quarter back, Nick, and his best friend, Charlie (Charlotte.) Charlie and Lainey become fast friends but Lainey is instantly smitten with Nick. The problem is, she has sworn off football players. Look where that got her before! Even though she has a beautiful daughter now, she will never trust a football player again.

cute little girl

Nick Jackson can’t believe how instant his attraction is to the beautiful Lainey. It’s not just physical. It’s everything. And then there is her adorable daughter. He never even knew he loved kids until he met little Cassie. But he is a first year rookie. He knows that the team needs to be his priority. Still, he can’t get these two off his mind. He has no idea what her story is. There obviously is something in her past that makes her so wary. He’s determined to figure out how to knock down her walls.

football players #7

This kind of sets things up for you. Chip is probably one of the most vile men I’ve ever read about. This man is cruel, manipulative and just completely awful. He makes life for Lainey so difficult. Lainey on the other hand, is one tough girl. She is determined to make a life for her daughter. She’s embarrassed by her choices in the past, but she now has a beautiful little human that depends on her. Nick is pretty swoony. In the beginning, it’s obvious that he’s a rookie. I wish he would have tried harder to win over Lainey but I really don’t know if he could have done much more at that point. He really does come through later on, though.

This book had so much, it was pretty intense, some pretty dark parts, and some sweet ones as well, as well as some smexy times. It was hard to put it down at times. It’s possible the copy I had wasn’t completely edited yet because there were some issues with names being mixed up. I also got a little confused with some of the time line. I loved the epilogue. It left me feeling all the warm and fuzzies. All in all, this was a great read that I really enjoyed and a wonderful way to get introduced to this author.

BE MINE is the second book in the Jackson Boys series. While I haven’t read ”The Charlotte Chronicles” yet, it wasn’t hard at all to follow the storyline since Charlotte and Nate are secondary characters in this story. Sports Romances are one of my top favorite romance genres but I love it when there’s also a heavy dose of comedy thrown in. That wasn’t the case with this one. The plot is at times, gritty and dark. I wasn’t really all that surprised as I have come to expect a bit of the gritty side when reading a Jen Frederick book. She delivered a nail-biting plot that had me on the edge of my seat.

Nick Jackson is a rookie NFL Quarterback for the Dallas Mustangs who falls instantly in love with Lainey Valdez and her precocious little daughter, Cassy. Lainey is a young single mother who made some bad choices in her youth and was seduced by another football quarterback who played upon her naivety and insecurities. Although she regrets the mistakes she’s made, she wouldn’t change a thing since it resulted in the birth of her daughter. Lainey is wary of men, especially football players. While she is attracted to Nick, she has no intention of getting romantically involved with him. Her main priority is providing a safe and nurturing home for her daughter. What she doesn’t realize is that Nick is one of the good guys.

There is undeniable chemistry between the two and I was instantly falling for Nick. He seemed almost too perfect, but that’s ok in the world of romance novels. We get a ton of angst and even some thrilling suspenseful moments as the story progresses.

Here are my overall ratings:

Hero: 4.5
Heroine: 4
Plot: 4
Angst: 4
Steam: 4.5
Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 4

BE MINE is currently available and Nick Jackson is a book boyfriend that romance readers will be swooning hard for!

Lainey Valdez has made enough bad choices to last a lifetime. She’s now twenty, and a single mom trying to survive in a small town in Texas. With little education or skills, she didn’t have many opportunities for a good life for her daughter. Then she gets a chance to move to Dallas, and she takes it. While looking for a job and a place to live she meets a man named Nick Jackson that shows her kindness in her time of need.

Nick Jackson is the new backup rookie quarterback for the Mustangs NFL team in Dallas. He meets Lainey, and is completely captivated by her beauty and how genuine she is. He wants to get to know her better, and relentlessly pursues her with no success.

Lainey is extremely attracted to Nick, but she has no room in her life for a man or romance, no matter how wonderful he is. She also doesn’t date pro football players. She does however accept his friendship. Over time they continue to grow closer, and he continues to show her how much he cares for her, and her daughter. Will Lainey finally open her heart and take a chance on love?

This was my first solo book by Jen Frederick, and it was addictive! I couldn’t put it down, and finished it in a day. Lol, like I didn’t want to go anywhere or do anything that would separate me from my kindle. The reason is Nick Jackson. I fell hard for this swoony, beautiful man, and just kept wanting more! 💗

Update 10-10

Nothing will move a book to my “Never gonna read” shelf quicker than learning that the Hero -

“Buried himself in a pit of women”

While the heroine was being blackmailed to move away and he had feelings for her...

Also...their first time together was outside a bar against a brick wall. Shows little to no respect for the heroine who he “loves”

JF has been on her way to my “author I don’t read” list for a while and now she’s officially there...

Hmmmm....this synopsis is completely different than the story published on the website. As there appears to be major changes Charlottes book would then be affected as Lanie was an established character and Nicks attraction was extremely clear.

I’m not a fan when an author makes these kind of monumental changes....

I’ll be waiting for reviews...

I love Jen Frederick but this could have been SO much better.

Please for all that is holy EDIT and when you are unsure, EDIT it again!!!! I've highlighted some of my favorites, so no excruciating details here. If you want to be bored, check out my highlights and notes.

I like heroines who show a backbone and Lainey was a freaking jelly fish. Ummm, anyone can do math, so shove Chip's face in that. Regardless of how you ended up at the party and what transpired, you were underage girl. So my conclusion is that Lainey just needs a man to run her life.
Nick was nice, nothing earth shattering, just nice.

Lainey and Nick are everything I love about sports romance. He is just sweet, hot perfection and Lainey is such a great character. Strong, funny and determined to give her daughter a better life. I have a soft spot for a single mum finding a great guy. Really loved this one

60% into the book and there’s still nothing going on with the H/h. They haven’t kissed, there’s no slow burn, or any kind of relationship development. More than half the book is about the creep of a dead beat dad, football, and the heroine taking care of her daughter. There’s nothing happening with their relationship and it’s as if they’re just friends hanging out. I’m totally lost as to how this is romance when most of the book doesn’t even involve the two main characters in a romantic way. Plus, the hero claims he was falling in love with the heroine (have no idea how since the author never wrote about them interacting much before she left) before she leaves Dallas only to give other women during the 2 years she was gone. I hate when authors do that!!!!

Spoilers ahead, 2.5*

At 16 Lainie started dating Chris who was just drafted as a pro player. In her misguided attempt to get someone to love her she had sex with Chris and he gives her drugs and alcohol and shares her with his friends. He takes pictures of the incident. When Lainie ends up pregnant Chris offers her money for an abortion but she kept the baby. Chris is forced to help her get a job but he's horrid to her. She meets Nick and Charlotte who befriend her. Chris is unhappy that Lainie is around however and he attacks her and offers her money to leave. Even though she'd developed feelings for Nich she leaves without a word. Two years later she stumbles across Charlotte who convinces her to return. This time she and Nick start a relationship but Chris refuses to let sleeping dogs lie.

Nick was attracted to Lainie from the beginning, Charlotte warns him she's not one to play with so he backs off until months later he finally decides to try with Lainie. Unfortunately she disappears. Though they try to find her they don't and Nick throws himself into football and women until it stops working for him. When Lainie comes back to town nothing is going to stand in Nick's way of getting his little family this time.

I liked parts of this story and not others, I understood Lainie's reasons for putting up with Chris's bs but it was tough to see the things he did to her. He had the pictures and was quite willing to blackmail her and she went through hell with that pos I was never more happy to see someone get shot! I didn't like the 2 year separation which allowed Nick to have sex with OW. I couldn't fault him as they weren't together and she did disappear without a word but I still didn't like it. I just barely liked the mcs and didn't really feel the connection between them as I know this author can deliver. Cassidy was a sweetheart and I liked her relationship with Nick.

OM drama out the wazoo

The epilogue was all the damn things!!!!!!!

Lainey Wilson is a single mom, kicked out of home and having to make a new start on her own with her daughter. The father of the baby is a total douche-bag. She had made a mistake and now she has to live with it. She has no one. No friends. Nothing.

Rookie quarter back Nick Jackson plays for the Mustangs. He first see's Lainey outside the bar that the players frequent. Alone and nearly in tears with her daughter he approaches her. This guy surprised me. I really liked him. He was a person who saw the hurt and defeat in her face and body.

The friendship he offered her along with his best-friend Charlotte was what Lainey needed. The attraction he felt for her he struggled to keep in check. But when Lainey's past comes creeping back in she has no choice but to leave and start over again.

It's a few years later that fate steps in and she runs into Charlotte again. A job offer and a chance to come back and start fresh. Her ex is gone so she takes the risk. When Nick realizes he has another chance he's not going to take it for granted. He goes all out. He fell in love with a broken young mother and this woman that he sees now is his.

I loved the story, the friendships that were formed. A feel good read.

Sigh. I have loved several of Ms. Frederick’s books, so it saddens me to say this is not one of them. Lainey and Nick have potential, but the story is sketched out and really needs some editing. It began as a little extra content for newsletter readers, and it shows. It really needs editing. Usually I can ignore small typos, punctuation issues but this is very noticeable. Names are switched at point between Lainey and her daughter Cassidy, the timeline is a bit off and the characters could have benefitted from some development.

Beyond that, the villain is a mustache twirler for evil’s sake, and the Firsts weren’t the best. Lainey’s Latina (based on her last name) but it doesn’t really make a difference. It’s a story that has great potential, and I did like the way the ending wrapped things up (even if it was rushed), but the devil is in the details, and this one doesn’t stack up.

Sooo... funny story. I have no idea how this landed on my Kindle, whether I accidentally bought it, whehter someone sent it to me, I don't know. I just turned my kindle on one day and there this book was. So thank you, my lucky star.

I looooved this book. At first I believed it would just be the usual sportsromance and single mother trope, but with its longish time span covered and the characters meeting again it became something more.

The characters were great too. Nick was simply... swoon. Like, literally, where can I buy one? I need it in my life. And Laney, she was a realist. I liked how she put her kid in front of her own, even when it meant having to say no to happiness.

Together, they had the kind of chemistry I always look for in this type or romance, but also with the extra sprinkle of sweetness added by Cassidy, Laney's daughter, and her relationship with Nick.

I would absolutely recommend this book and would just like to add that the pace of the story was different from the usual. Most of the angst is concentrated on the first part of the book, while the second half I would say is more soothing and calm, which I highly enjoyed. I'm sick of the 3/4 climax issue --> break up --> gesture --> happy ending.

I am angry. Beyond anything I am angry. How could u write such an amazing blurb and then the book is beyond fkd up and not even proof read.
I can't believe this is the same author that wrote Want You.

Honestly it has the potential to be amazing and so good but it badly badly badly BADLY needs editing. Cassidy is often Charlie and Lainey. Sometimes Lainey is written as Cass. No. And the fact that the whole baby thing was done so weirdly.. Babies like really two year old okay she described her as a baby and the kid would talk like a frigging adult. Not the best way to have the reader imagine all the adorablitiy I couldn't even get into it and the baby is the entire reason I got this book.
I just wished she had made Cass into a baby. Crawling kind. That didn't speak because God knows I was so excited to get this book and the blurb is so good it's just a frigging disaster.

I regret coming across this truly just wasted my time.

I am actually a little disappointed. To be completely fair if I wasn't in a book slump the things that I am hung up on in this book are things I probably would have glossed over and ignored. But since I am in that mood where all I want to do is read but I don't know what I want to read except that it's not the thousand plus books on my kindle.

So what was my issue here? Nothing and everything. I liked the characters I just didn't love them. There were a few contradictions through the book that bugged me but they were minimal.

I am such a huge Jen Frederick fan that I want to love it and I feel guilty that I just don't. But maybe I will read it again later and it will work for me.

Be Mine by Jen Frederick is book Two in the Jackson Boys series. This is the story of Nick Jackson and Lainey Wilson. I haven't yet read the previous book, so for me this was a standalone book.
Lainey made a mistake with one guy that left her with a baby. Now she is pretty much homeless with a crying baby. Nick is a rookie for the Dallas Mustangs seems to fall instantly for Lainey and her little girl. But she is cautious of getting into another relationship.
This was such an emotional read...definitely a page turner for me. Loved it!

A Comfy 3.5 Stars

Overall this was a enjoyable read. Both Lainey and Nick worked as characters and had me rooting for them. Nick was everything the odious Chip wasn't.

Wished there had been a tad more fluidity in the timeline, and somethings need to be teased out a bit more, but this introduction to the author will have me reading more.

2 stars.

Lainey hasn't had the best of luck in life--she got pregnant at the age of 17 by literally a monster who wanted nothing to do with her or the baby. She hasn't had a great support system, and girl really could use a break. Enter new NFL quarterback Nick, who's in Dallas with his BFF Charlie (the MC from The Charlotte Chronicles). When he meets waitress Lainey and her adorable two year old, Cass, he's immediately thunderstruck and knows he wants a future with the young single mom. Lainey's sworn off all athletes and Nick isn't sure he's ready to settle down. With all the drama swirling around them, so will they ever get it together?

I've had this book on my TBR shelf since mid-2015. After reading The Charlotte Chronicles , I couldn't wait to read this one and I was so thrilled when Frederick started releasing this on Wattpad. I have to admit that maybe I had it too hyped up in my head because my overwhelming feeling here is...meh.

meh gif

I'll start with what I did like. This takes place in the middle of the events that happen in The Charlotte Chronicles and though I don't think you necessarily have to read that book before this one, I definitely think you'll want to--otherwise you might miss some of the dynamic between Nick and Charlie, and why she gives a flip about Nate. Charlie and Nick are BFFs and grew up closer than most siblings, and I loved getting more of their relationship here.

Also, once again Jen Frederick is the queen of dirty talk. Seriously, if you haven't read some (or all) of her other books, you need to get on that.

hot gif

I did like Nick. He was sweet and great with Cassidy. And even though I don't understand why, he really wanted to be with Lainey and be good for her.
Finally, I'm going to taste her. Finally, I'm going to touch her. Finally. Finally. Finally.

She tastes like a contradiction--tart and sweet at the same time.

I won't ever want to kiss another woman in my life. Her flavor will be the only one I'll want in my mouth from this moment until the time that I die.

Also, in the epilogue So I loved that. And I love the cover.

So what I didn't like. This story was all. over. the. place. The hot and cold with Lainey was rage-inducing. She was presumptuous and constantly jumped to conclusions, regardless of what anyone else told her. Charlie trusting her when she had shown absolutely no reason to didn't make sense to me and actually made me respect Charlie a little less. 32% in, I actually questioned why I wasn't flouncing, but since I wanted it so bad for so long, I couldn't stop.

There's a lot that I don't need to go into detail about, like the fact that there were a ton of typos (including mixing up characters at one point and I was like WTHF is going on here?!? before I realized what was going on) and the fact that the toddler Cass was way mature for her age and the total drama-fueled douchebaggery of Lainey's baby daddy.

Even though this story was just okay, I will continue to read Jen Frederick's books, and I will also continue to hold out on a book for Reese in this series. 🤷

I enjoyed this book. I'm a big fan. The reason for not being a 5 star, the editing. I hope she is working on an update. This book was so good even with the mess ups but would have been perfect without them. To me they weren't huge, but distracting, for me it messed up the flow.

I had no clue this was the second book in a series as it does not say it anywhere except Goodreads so I didn’t read The Charlotte Chronicles. First let me say that there were a lot of grammar mistakes which were annoying as hell and also the main female character Lainey was called Cass (her daughter’s name) several times which was annoying and confusing. Lainey was a complete doormat and I wanted to strangle her most of the time. I loved Nick Jackson and he was awesome with Cassidy. I didn’t like the two year separation, it was stupid and unnecessary. If I was Lainey I would’ve destroyed Chip, I would’ve went to the press and buried his scumbag ass.

Lainey Valdez’s life is a series of highs and lows.
Taken advantage of by a man she thought she could trust. – LOW
Pregnant and raising a child on her own, all before she’s 20. – LOW
A child, Cassidy, who she adores. – HIGH
Bullied/harassed/threatened by the child’s father, a star quarterback, Chip Peters. – LOW
Randomly meet’s the star quarterback’s back up, Nick Jackson. – HIGH

And from there, everywhere Nick is, there is a high. Because he’s the real deal. Yes, he’s the book boyfriend with no faults. Not only does he want Lainey desperately, but he has an unexpected need to want to take care of Cassidy.

But things aren’t always easy for Lainey and Nick, especially when Chip is around. And this guy is aptly named, with a huge chip on his shoulder that seems to make him a psycho ass!! Seriously, this guy is not right.

While Chip seems set on destroying this couple before they even get a chance, Nick is not so easy to manipulate, and thankfully understands that history is history.

Some of the transitions in this book were too fast for me, and I thought the building drama was resolved a bit too quickly. But overall, this was a fun and quick sports romance, with a BBF determined to get what he wants, no matter the costs.

I ran through a gamut of emotions while reading Lainey's List. At times I was annoyed. Or so very angry, those angry times usually were because of Chip, man I hated that motherfucker. Nick and Lainey made me angry too because of choices they made or didn't make but my anger for them was never on the level as what it was for Chip. Just thinking about him now is getting me angry. Sometimes sad, other times so giddy with happiness but overall I truly enjoyed it. I loved going on this sometimes frustrating journey with Nick and Lainey. That epilogue, there are no words for my love for it. Although bittersweet I loved it.

Lainey's List was released as a weekly serial through the author's newsletter from October 30 2015-December 9 2016

Be Mine is very different from Lainey's List in a lot of ways with the exception of a few scenes and my hate for Chip, that didn't change. I enjoyed Nick and Lainey's journey even when it was frustrating at times. The typos, wrong names, fluctuating time lines etc. really distracted and took away from the story and my overall enjoyment of it.

Nick and Lainey's story

I'm so happy we got to read Nick and Lainey's story. They're so cute together and after seeing them in the Charlotte Chronicles, I really wanted to see them end up together. I read this all in one sitting because it was so good and sucked me in. Chip was a huge douche and I'm so happy Nick was there to love Lainey and take care of her. Loved this book and all Jen's books.

Nick likes to get points across where his woman is concerned, “making sure that Cass’s nanny knows that the only woman in this place that I want in my bed is you.” Nick sometimes takes things a little too seriously, “what are you gonna do? Have you brother’s SEAL team take him out?”He’s silent for so long that I nudge him with my shoe. “Nick!” I liked this book, I really loved Nick.
