Clever plot and kinky hot

Hunter and Cal are back and this author duo puts them in the heart of our current, toxic political atmosphere where the FBI Cal is so dedicated to gets shortchanged and the radical alt-right becomes bolder in displaying its racist faces. I loved it because I’m a political junkie and I wish Cal and Hunter were out working for the resistance. Hunter is still keeping some activities hidden from Cal and Cal is restless as he’s left hamstrung in his efforts to fight domestic terrorism. (Really ironic after recent horrific events). Hunter is still pushing Cal’s buttons, generating extra heat in the bedroom. There’s a little extra Daddy-kink in this one too. Very hot stuff! It doesn’t eclipse the tension as Cal and Hunter work together to stop another dangerous plot. One of the villains is in the wind though, so I expect to see another volume coming featuring these characters, who I’ve really come to like a lot.

First off, I loved the first book in this series.... though I didn't realize it was going to be a series at the time, since the ending seemed quite conclusive for me. As soon as I saw that there was going to be a second book, I knew I would read it. I didn't even bother reading the blurb, figuring it would most likely be just as enjoyable as the first.

Boy, was I wrong.

If it wasn't for the fact that this was the sequel to a book I quite enjoyed, I would have stopped reading this before even finishing the first chapter. As it was, I almost decided to mark it as a DNF by the time I got to the end of Chapter 4.

The "new administration" mentioned in the blurb is obviously non-other than Trump. There's mentions of MAGA (Make America Great Again) red hats, Charlottesville, Russian trolls, Nazis, white supremacists, White Nationalis, Antifa, Black Lives Matter, Milo Yiannopolous, 4chan.... all before Chapter 5. There's further mention of doxing, "Russia crap", Stuxnet, presidential tweets, Republicans, etc. I hate politics. Even in Canada, you can't turn on a news station without reading some new nonsense the current POTUS is spouting. So I definitely don't want to pick up a book, hoping for some leisurely escapism, only to be reading the same things you get slammed with everyday in the news.

As for the hacking stuff, there were a few things in the first book that I didn't really understand what Hunter was talking about, not being overly tech savvy, but this one had a few more moments where my eyes just glazed over while Hunter goes on about TOR browers, ISP sniffing, deep dives, etc.

Moving on to antagonists for this book.... I would have rather Chad not be involved in this book at all. I didn't like him in the first book, not just because he is a rapist, but because he was not an interesting character. I suppose Hunter had to have a way to deal with unresolved issues/feelings, so writing Chad in as a bad guy... but he is still just as uninteresting in this book as the first. As for the puppet master pulling Chad's strings, it was pretty obvious right from the start. After all, everyone knows dogs are an excellent judge of character.

The plot was predictable. With all the political and tech talk being thrown around, it made for a long read. It took me almost 4 days to wade through this. And the ending was anything but conclusive, which leads me to believe there will be a third book.... which I definitely won't be reading.

I have to say, the biggest disappointment in this book, for me, was Hunter and Cal. The push/pull relationship and the UST of the first book wasn't there... which, seeing as they are now living in domestic bliss, I guess shouldn't come as a surprise. But things were just too smooth sailing with them. Having little disagreements leading to spankings, which then led to sex scenes just didn't work for me. Even though there was twice the smut in this book compared to the first (3 of which are even before the halfway mark, which I found made things a little unbalanced), it wasn't half as good as what the first book delivered. I felt like the smut was relying more on kink than chemistry. Throwing in some Daddy kink, spanking, DP with a dildo, bondage, etc. doesn't automatically make for good smut. I actually found myself skimming over the last scene. None of the scenes packed half the punch of the last sex scene in the first book.... or even the first scene in the first book.

One last thing, the paragraph formatting for this book is odd. I would almost say that this book was co-written by having each other write a paragraph and then hand it over to the other person. It does make it somewhat difficult to follow who is speaking at times. Like, you'll often have one character's dialogue split up into two paragraphs needlessly, and you don't realize until the third paragraph that the second paragraph was still the first character talking and the third paragraph was the second character responding. It was something that I noticed in the first book, but didn't mind because I was enjoying other elements of the book too much. But, seeing as I didn't enjoy any element of this book, that formatting just was jarring.

I'm really disappointed that this book didn't work for me. I loved the first book, and this just didn't even feel like I was reading about the same characters from the same authors.

Wow. This series is amazing. Before reading these books, be forewarned, it deals with white supremacists, Antifa, race wars and such. Just keep it in mind. It's not real bad but it's the point behind it.
Hunter is kind of killing time. He's supposed to be doing consulting work for the FBI, but they really haven't given him much to do. As a matter of fact, the FBI is trying to shut Cal out. He's already lost his supervisor and now no one is listening to his reports. When his old friend Barnes gets ahold of him, he considers joining the ranks of Dark Sun, a 'consulting firm'. But as soon as Hunter meets Barnes, he knows something is off. And he's right. Barnes is heading up a white supremacists group as well trying to start a race war. He's also trying to set Hunter up to get Cal back and on his side. But Hunter can't keep things like this from Cal and he tells Cal everything. From the meetings with Chad, to the meeting with Hunter and everything in between. Cal is furious and doesn't know what to believe, but knows Hunter wouldn't lie to him. And it's made him really think about Barnes and their past and his eyes have opened. And now they have to figure out how to stop this race war and stop Barnes from doing what he's trying to do. They stop the war, but the cost was Cal being hurt and now Barnes is in the wind. And Cal and Hunter now have to constantly look over their shoulder to stay alive.
Hunter skirts the line a lot. He knows it. Cal knows it. Cal has to turn the other way sometimes, but he knows Hunter is trying to do things for the greater good. But Hunter is caught up in something now and he doesn't know how to tell Cal. He knows Cal will be upset, especially when he finds out it involves his traitorous friend, Barnes, and now he's involved. I feel for Hunter. He wants to protect Cal from this but he can't keep this a secret. He can't. Cal has to know who his so called friend really is and what he's planning. It's odd how Cal and Hunter's relationship works sometimes. Cal gets furious but somehow they work it out and usually in the bedroom and they can calm down and figure it out. I'm glad it works for them but this is huge for them. It's almost like a no win situation for both of them. With the FBI shutting out Cal and Hunter dealing with what he is, it's shaking them up. But they are working on building a strong foundation to surpass the trouble they get into.
I'm ready to see how book 3 is going to turn out with Barnes in the wind. The man has money and contacts and he's not stupid either. I'm hoping Cal and Hunter make it out alive. I know they're the heroes of the books, but still.

This sequel was just as good as the first book. Hunter and Cal had a rough and kinky sex life, but they were also completely devoted and madly in love. As Cal was dealing with the changes a new administration was causing at the FBI, Hunter was trolling the much hated Chad, wanting to find some way to make the other man pay for his evil deeds. While looking into Chad's activities, Hunter discovered a dangerous plot, and he had no choice but to bring his findings to Cal. I won't offer spoilers, but I will say that these two made a terrific team again this time around.
The relationship between Cal and Hunter was complicated but loving. Bruiser the Pomeranian was still feisty and precious, and I loved seeing Cal get all gooey over him. Sam Dupre was a terrific friend to both Cal and Hunter, and I hope to get to know him better in a future installment.
This book went back and forth between stressful, sexy, sweet, and dark. It kept my emotions jumping all over the place. I loved it, and I'm ready for the next in the series!

There's so much here that I enjoyed -- Hunter's snark, Cal's integrity, and both of them wrapped around Bruiser's little paw. I had a suspicion of who might be behind Weisse Drache, but the reason for it made my stomach turn...which I think was the intention. The fantasy sex in chapter seven is hella hot, but chapter thirteen is just as amazing, illustrating their connection to each other no matter what. Have to add more books by these authors to my TBR!

This is the second book in The Phisher King Series. A fascinating book the writing was good. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters interesting. The characters were developed and thought out. Callum Riggs is an FBI Agent and Hunter Walsh is a Hacker and they are the MC’s of this book. I can recommend this book as a good read. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

A great follow up to the first book. Cal and Hunter are just as fabulous as they were in the first book and of course it was great seeing Bruiser again!! They have a great kink going and their sex scenes are incredibly hot! They face some challenges throughout the book which makes for a well rounded story. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
