Brambly Hedge #5-8

Tales from Brambly Hedge

Rate this book
Celebrate the 40th anniversary of the miniature world of the mice of Brambly Hedge! The mice of Brambly Hedge have many adventures but they always have time for fun too. All through the year, they mark the seasons with feasts and festivities and, of course, the mice never miss an opportunity to meet and celebrate.

This beautifully designed slipcase contains four classic stories following their adventures throughout the year.

In THE HIGH HILLS, Wilfred goes on an exciting expedition. There is a wonderful surprise for a growing family of mice in POPPY’S BABIES. The mice celebrate Midwinter’s Eve in style in THE SECRET STAIRCASE, and in SEA STORY, the mice set sail for Sandy Bay on an important mission.

Jill Barklem (1951-November 15, 2017) was a British writer and illustrator of children's books. Her most famous work is the Brambly Hedge series.

After an accident when she was thirteen, Jill was unable to take part in PE or games at school and instead developed her talent for drawing and art. On leaving school, she studied illustration at St Martin's in London. She became a full-time illustrator. She spent five years on research before she started to write her first stories about the mice of Brambly Hedge.

Well, I liked this one better than the first one.

By the way, Jill Barklem died last November and I didn't even know it. I guess she wasn't as famous in Italy as she was in the UK. But I do remember reading Brambly Hedge when I was a kid.

The stories are a bit more complex and the art is brilliant as usual.

I'm really glad I got to read it again.

I recently found all my old Brambly Hedge books and decided to re-read them. I am happy to report that the stores are just as good and the illustrations are just as gorgeous as I remembered them being. I think these are stories young and old alike can enjoy and the beautiful pictures will definitely be of interest to all ages.

Such a delightful listen! Great audio production once again. Sweet stories.

I especially loved Sea Story because it is so comforting and reminds me of my own childhood with seaside trips and walking through the dunes.

My least favorite was Poppy’s Babies because it feels very stereotypical in its gendernorms but that’s a nitpick.

Such a shame there are no more stories :’)

The stories are heartwarming, classic, yet simple adventures, very traditional English, with mice as the characters. The illustrations are brilliant, especially if you're into precious miniatures, dollhouses, and lots and lots of detail. Some people are not, but even they might appreciate the skill Jill Barklem demonstrates with watercolor and pen and ink. My daughter and I love reading these stories together, and pouring over the pictures, which tell a good bit of the story in themselves. We often discover something new in them because there's so much to look at.
