The Fastest Man Alive is now supercharged with new abilities after being exposed to the Negative Speed Force, and until he can get his powers under control, he’s a danger to Central City and himself. But before he can begin repairing the damage, he has to stop Shrapnel as well as a gruesome new villain, Bloodwork. And it’s all Barry’s fault!
In the fallout, Barry is reassigned to work at Iron Heights prison, where he arrives just in time to find a Rogue dead. As Barry investigates the crime, Godspeed joins the Flash’s cadre of enemies and leads the Fastest Man Alive and Captain Cold into a deadly rematch. But when the clues begin to reveal an even greater conspiracy at work, the Flash soon discovers Iron Heights’ deadliest secret…
Writer Joshua Williamson (Justice League vs. Suicide Squad) continues his smash-hit run on the Fastest Man Alive, joined by artists Carmine Di Giandomenico, Neil Googe, Christian Duce, Gus Vazquez, Pop Mhan, Howard Porter and Scott Kolins. Collects The Flash #28-38, Annual #1 and the Flash story from DC Universe Holiday Special #1.
Yet another strong volume of the Flash from writer Joshua Williamson. He continues to build upon story threads developed earlier in the run while moving the story forward. Just enough mysterious are left to build momentum for the next volume. The art for this hardcover is much more diverse than previous volumes but I never felt it was a detriment to the story. One of the best superhero books out there.
This would have almost received a 5/5 rating if not for a pointless Dark Knights: Metal crossover issue. Any time a series deviates from it's existing narrative to focus on an event within a hardcover collection the quality suffers. Event issues should be collected separately with those of other participating series.
This includes multiple volumes and their quality varies. The first one, with Flash having Negative abilities, was a slog, as Barry's not his normal cheerful self, and the whole storyline of the NEgative Force is pretty weak. And the way that it is resolved is peak hand-waving. It's like they got tired of the storyline and couldn't come up with a good way to resolve it, so they just threw in a Deus Ex Machina - although there are also hints that storyline crossovers may have been part of the reason for the removal. The second volume is a bit better, with Barry doing some actual detective work, and it brings the Rogues back albeit while still in prison (sort of). It's a better story but still not one of the stronger Flash stories I've read.
This hardcover introduces the intriguing new antagonist Bloodwork, who congeals well with Barry's arc to form an exciting story, possibly the best of Flash (2016) so far! In the next few issues it was fun to see Meena back, as I really like her character. The murder mystery was a thrilling read and already knowing that August would go from villain to anti hero, I was worried this would lesson his intial impact and character, but surprisingly it made him more interesting and gave him further depth!
I keep enjoying these Deluxe editions, Williamson plays out some characters and story arcs over the long haul so it’s nice to be able to sink my teeth into more than just 5-6 issues at a go.
Looks like the Negative speed force is no joke, nor is the super-hemophiliac Bloodwork, who makes a satisfyingly creepy villainous debut.
The stuff at Iron Heights prison was a little more contrived but there’s a teaser at the end that kindles a little hope.
Nothing spectacular but I enjoy reading about Flash taking on a guy who has blood powers and a tie-in to Dark Nights that has to place in this book without context and the return of a character for two issues without a conclusion and a Rogues story that was fun and a good stand alone issue at the end.
Arrange spent a lot of time moping in this one. Luckily he bucked up once he got rid of the negative speed force. Rogues are bad baddies in this. August (Godspeed) appears on the road to redemption. Great art and story. Final issue is Christmas annual - Wally and Barry at Christmas.
