The story To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han focuses on a young 17 year old girl in her junior year of high school named Laura Jean Covey. She has two sisters, one older named Margot and one younger named Katherine (Kitty for short) they lost their mother when they were young. Kitty, who is very mischievous, decides that she is going to go through all of Laura Jean’s belongings and finds a box of love letters Laura Jean wrote to all the boys she has loved before, five in total. She sends out the letters and Laura Jean panics because one of those letters had come into the hands of her sister Margot’s ex-boyfriend Josh and another went to the most gorgeous and popular boy ever Peter Kavinsky. To avoid facing Josh she and Peter Kavinsky decide to fake date and they eventually start to fall for each other while swearing that they aren’t. Laura Jean goes through fights with her boyfriend, her sister's ex-boyfriends, and her sisters but she eventually makes it through and finds the boy she will love forever.
One of the most important characters that I think I connected to the most was not actually in the book. She was the mother of Laura Jean, Margot, and Kitty and her name was Eve Song. I feel like whenever there is a character who has passed away they become more special because we get to hear about them through the people who loved them. Most times authors do their best to honor those characters as if they were real and had really passed away and I think that’s very comforting to people who have lost loved ones. I have never had to go through that but I know I will have to in the future. To see how Laura Jean and her sisters take care of their grief reminds me that losing someone doesn’t always have to be sad, it can also be a way to celebrate the life they had. Of course Laura Jean says “I wish my mom was here” (page 338) throughout the book and she must feel like she doesn’t have the support of a mother but the way they talk about her it’s almost like she is sharing every moment with them. Slowly throughout the book I learn of all the fond memories Laura Jean had with her mother, like the hat box that her mother had gotten her. It was the “Only gift from Mommy I got that was just for me… you can put all your most precious, most favorite, most secret things in here” (Page 352). It connected her to her mother in a special way because living with 2 other sisters it’s hard to get gifts that feel like your own. This hatbox is also where she stored all of her love letters which were very secret and special to her. Eve Song meant a lot to all these girls and her sweet memory lives on with them. They make sure that she is never forgotten and always respected and I know that Jenny Han intended to make every reader feel like they missed her too.
This book was a very heartwarming story to read. It had the right amount of sweet and sad. When I read it I went through all the emotions that Laura Jean had, almost like I was her. I connected with all the characters as soon as they were introduced to me. This is definitely a rom-com type of book so if you love rom-coms I would 100% recommend this book. Since Laura Jean is in highschool during the book she faces similar problems like most highschool students do, so I think this is a perfect for that level for that age. Most times I struggle to read books if they start to lose their plot halfway through but with this book I knew that every chapter and every page was building up to something and I only had to keep reading to figure it out. It’s an interesting and entertaining book (It might leave you on a cliffhanger) but that just means you’ll have to read the next one in the series.
So I just read the first chapter and I really like the descriptiveness of the setting it felt like I was at the beach with her. I find it interesting how when she talks about Conrad and Jeremiah they are almost like social polar opposites.
