Early 18th centuries essays/newspaper articles are definitely an acquired taste, but I seem to be slowly acquiring it. Even the dull parts (like the war news from Europe) were interesting for the little bits of historical reality I picked up -- like how slowly news travelled, and how sometimes both sides could claim a victory for a while because nobody knew for certain exactly what had happened. Some of the humour is lost on me, but occasionally Steele's satire seems amazingly applicable to politics & fashion today. This complete version isn't something I'd reccomend to a casual reader -- there are selections from Steele & Addison for people who just want a taste -- but I'm enjoying it and am already about 2/5 of the way through the second volume.
